Aster for a boy? Please help!

Just that really!

Would it be weird to name my boy Aster?

Will people get confused and assume by definition that I have a girl?

Do British think it is a nice name? (We are not originally from the Uk)

Please help!!!

I would assume girl.

Essexmummy88 · 12/02/2022 07:52

I really don’t like it

alisoninwonderland · 12/02/2022 07:54

I would assume girl as well I think

GiantSpider · 12/02/2022 07:54

How about Aston? I think people will mis-hear and think it's Aston anyway!

merrymelodies · 12/02/2022 07:55

Isn't aster a flower?

Talipesmum · 12/02/2022 07:55

I know a male Aster (adult). He’s the only person I’ve known with that name. No idea where he’s from (not British). I like that his name is distinctive but I’ve got no particular opinion of it - it’s just his name. It’s fine.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 12/02/2022 07:55

Floral names are associated with girls really.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 12/02/2022 07:55

I would assume flower name = girl

TabithaHazel · 12/02/2022 07:57

I wouldn’t name a kid anything starting with the ‘ass’ sound - kids can be cruel!

Anystarinthesky · 12/02/2022 07:57

It means a flower and is more commonly for girls.

boilingstormyseas · 12/02/2022 07:57

It's a flower name - Michaelmas daisy

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 12/02/2022 08:00

What about Asher instead? I’m pretty sure I used to teach one.

Abrakatabra · 12/02/2022 08:15

Thanks all, that’s really helpful!!!

How about Asterios?

Asterios would be the full name anyway and I just thought of Aster as a possible nn but apparently it’s not a good idea!

Asterios sound more boy.
The ios ending is definitely masculine (ridiculously).
Then you can have any nickname you like.
Before your Asterios post, I was going to suggest Acer or Aston as alternatives, but I am Anglicising your choices.

Abrakatabra · 12/02/2022 08:43

Thank you! :-)

So Asterios isn’t too big/weird for British ears?

OP posts:
GingerAndTheBiscuits · 12/02/2022 08:50

Is it Greek? We have friends with lengthy Greek names for their children and they don’t have any issues as far as I’m aware!

Abrakatabra · 12/02/2022 09:10

It is a Greek name yes but we live in the Uk and wondering if it’s too weird and if it would be better to shorten it and use a more British nn.

Nice for a girl. Not so much for a boy.

AppleTangerine · 12/02/2022 09:12

I met a boy Aster and didn't find it weird. Parenrs weren't British.

NewtoHolland · 12/02/2022 09:12

Asterios sounds fab.

PatterPaws · 12/02/2022 09:13

Asterios will invite the nickname ass.

Mundra · 12/02/2022 09:18

Nestor is a boys' name with a similar sound, but it's v rare these days.
