Ive come accross four newborns recently. And every other boy is Leo. I was just wondering as its quite old school why all of a sudden its really popular.

It was in Dr who? I dunno it reminds me of a cow in one of my kids books though

Kanaloa · 10/02/2022 22:16

Clara and Leo are nice names. I haven’t noticed them being specifically popular recently, there was a Leo when I was at school and I’ve met one small Leo through work & one Clara.

Sometimes you can randomly have a clump of kids named a similar thing - I was astounded when I once worked at a preschool with two Mileys when I’d never even met one before!

kitcat15 · 10/02/2022 22:18

Well you could say that about all the old fashioned names that have made a come back.....my DD age 6 is friends with Ada, Lillian, Violet, Dorothy and Olive ....they all come back in the end

kitcat15 · 10/02/2022 22:18

GD not DD

EdgeOfACoin · 10/02/2022 22:52

I know of three born within a couple of weeks of each other.

NotYourOscarSpeech · 10/02/2022 22:58

I’m pregnant and Clara is top of my list of girl’s names. For us, it’s because of Clara as the girl in the Nutcracker which DH and I always go to see at the ROH before Christmas and have done for the last 11 years bar two cancelled due to COVID performances.

AudTheDeepMinded · 10/02/2022 22:59

I knew a brother and sister only a few years ago with those names (primary age). I always think of long distance Clara the lorry driver from Pigeon St!

MondeoFan · 10/02/2022 23:01

I know of 6 or 7 Leo's all between 0-7

TheYearOfSmallThings · 10/02/2022 23:02

Leo is ubiquitous around here, but I haven't met any little Claras.

TheHoptimist · 10/02/2022 23:22

Im in my 50s and Clara is on of my names . Named after a great aunt born in about 1900.

Pronounced Claara although many seem to be said Claire-a these days

JurgensCakeBabyJesus · 10/02/2022 23:29

My room mate at uni was Clara I'm 36, my niece is also Clara she's 6, so it doesn't seem that unusual to me

countrybump · 10/02/2022 23:41

My grandmother was Clara (pronounced Claire-rah) and would have been in her 90s now. She’d be delighted it’s become popular.

RonCarlos · 10/02/2022 23:55

@AudTheDeepMinded

Always on ti-ime! She's never late...

RonCarlos · 10/02/2022 23:56

@countrybump

My Dad had an Auntie Clara pronounced like that. From Yorkshire.

Evanesco · 10/02/2022 23:59

I love the name Clara and know of it mostly from the nutcracker but have seen it mentioned here a lot over the last 2 years or so - I don't know any in really life though

Geamhradh · 11/02/2022 06:19

Because name trends come and go.
At my primary school in the early 70s there were sisters called Hannah and Charlotte and they virtually featured in the local paper because of their unusual names.

I predict a resurgence in about 10 years of the names popular when I was a child. It seems to be once that generation become grandparents (or older) themselves.

I know a few young Claras, it’s been popular for a while. Always Claar-rah though, never heard anyone say it Clair-rah
ThirdElephant · 11/02/2022 07:12

Disney's Nutcracker, if I had to guess.

It's been in the top 100 for a few years now. I know two in a primary school of fewer than 100 kids.
Gardeningcreature · 11/02/2022 07:16

Clara is beautiful.

changenametimeagain · 11/02/2022 07:20

I know a Clara who is almost 30. She's amazing. Great name!

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 11/02/2022 07:57

I believe Claire-ah was traditionally the English pronunciation and has now more or less died out, similar to Maria pronounced ma-rye-ah and Sophia pn so-fye-ah.

Lovely name. I know a toddler Clara. I don't know if there's any particular source - Jenna Coleman's Clara was a few years ago now. There was a Nutcracker film with Keira Knightley in 2018 but I don't think it did terribly well.

Fivebeanchilli · 11/02/2022 08:04

My ds had 6 Leos in his year and the year below at primary - he's 17. I know loads between the ages of 12 and 17 - not so many younger. Similarly I know quite a few Claras who are between 7 and 10 but none younger
I think we are often a few years earlier than the rest of the UK in our trends though (N London).

Claire-ah is used by the Americans! I know this from watching far too much Minnie Mouse bow-toons with my 3 year old. There's Claire-a the hen, Claire-a-belle the cow and Daisy Duck has an Aunt Claire-a.
Papergirl1968 · 11/02/2022 09:06

It remind me of the girl in Heidi. The crippled child in her invalid chair as she was probably referred to in that. Sad
We have just had a baby Penelope registered at our surgery (I'm a GP receptionist). Maybe Penelope is making a comeback.
