Honest thoughts on Phoebe

Strong contender for DD, however, I’ve recently been having some reservations as although it gets a lot of love on name forums, I’ve had quite a few crinkled noses IRL when ‘road testing’.

  1. Will it forever have the ‘kooky’ Friends association attached to it?
  1. There are a few cruel nicknames I can think of which worry me slightly like Pee-bee, Fleabee, Feeble and Phoebe-jeebies.
  1. Does it travel well if she wanted to live or study abroad?

Any Phoebe mums out there that can reassure me?! I do love it but just having a wobble.

I love it! Great name.

Lulu1919 · 10/02/2022 20:09

Love

PlanetNormal · 10/02/2022 20:14

Excellent name. Not boring, but not made-up / yooneek / chavvy either.

4thtimethecharm · 10/02/2022 20:35

PPs seem to all love it, so I feel a bit bad for offering a different noise. To be fully honest, for me it is a marmite name, and I am sadly not on the 'love it' side. Not because of associations with anything, but just because I don't like the actual sound of the word.

Having said that, I don't think anyone would judge your daughter or her parents for that name, though. It is a perfectly acceptable option. I just don't think you can anticipate everyone loving it (but when would that happen anyway with a baby name?). You just do you, OP. If you guys love it, that is what matters.

Thedogscollar · 10/02/2022 20:58

Sorry not for me. Don't like how it sounds. Just hear heebie jeebies when I hear this name.

UserBot9to5 · 10/02/2022 20:59

Love it! Honestly if my mother hadnt hated yhe name it could be my dd's name

CharlieBoo · 10/02/2022 21:57

@TatianaBis actually yeah.. much more now you’ve asked

TatianaBis · 10/02/2022 21:59

Nah there’s nothing more boring than Charlie.

Aquamarine1029 · 10/02/2022 22:01

I dislike it. It's tiresome and rather daft sounding to my ears.

Howeverdoyouneedme · 10/02/2022 22:22

I nearly used it for one of my children, not sure why I didn’t, the spelling I think. I still like it though. Also like Hebe

NewtoHolland · 10/02/2022 22:48

Adore it
Classic and yet still has a fun feel to it.
Works as well for a grown up as for a child.

FunnyGoingsOn · 10/02/2022 23:03

I love it and don't think any of your concerns are valid 😅😅

A friends adult daughter is called Phoebe and I always think what a nice name it is.

Purplemoon193 · 11/02/2022 07:57

Love it! My favourite girls name

Luredbyapomegranate · 11/02/2022 08:36

It’s nice enough. And getting quite popular so the spelling won’t be an issue. And friends probably helps the international recognition.

MrsHGWells · 11/02/2022 08:39

There is only ‘one’ Phoebe, that is the quirky space cadet on friends.

ChelBelle · 11/02/2022 08:45

My 6yr old is a Phoebe. We still love it and have no regrets. We think of the Greek titan Phoebe name meaning bright/shining.

Phoebeiscooll1 · 27/05/2024 17:50

I am a phoebe! The list of nicknames is long and pretty out there. (Bebo, Pickle, Fobs, Phobia). About the friends character the attachment is definitely there as I am actually named after her. The mispronunciations and misspellings are crazy. I get called penelope, phanelope, etc. And the misspellings vary from Phe- obe (one letter off) to Febi, Feby and one barista put kelli after i repeated my name 4 times.

Aww I have a baby Phoebe, you’ve just given me more nickname ideas 😂. Do you ever get Bee/ Bea? That’s my favorite nickname!

MistyHazelFox · 27/05/2024 18:16

I love Phoebe as name. Spelling doesn't really travel that well in Eastern and southern countries I think, they usually don't use ph diphtong, but Friends character might make spelling more familiar to people there, since Friends is big across the world.
That said - you can look at pronunciation as approachable - like Leela or Lily or Nina, or you can see it more as "kids" or "pets" name - like Gigi

Frostfable · 27/05/2024 20:25

Absolutely horrible sounding name …
fee bee
just so ugly

Notwithittoday · 27/05/2024 20:34

I have a Phoebe and never ever regretted it. She’s feisty and smart. Struggled to find something I liked as much for dd2

Clearly it’s a bit marmite 🤣

But I think it’s beautiful.

FangsForTheMemory · 27/05/2024 21:36

I love it, it's in my top three. Classy and classical.

RuthW · 27/05/2024 21:59

Lovely. Dd was nearly a Phoebe.

OffToButtonM00n · 28/05/2024 07:28

Ooh my old thread has been resurrected.

We went for it in the end and it suits her down to the ground, she’s loud, funny, giggly and sparkly, just how I imagine a Phoebe to be!

We call her Bee, Bebe, Bops, Phee and she gets Pheebs by my friends.

Thanks everyone :)
