Hi all,

What does everyone think of the name May for a little girl?

Thank you x

Sweet, simple, and inoffensive.

To my taste it's a little bland and overdone during the past 15 years - maybe not on it's own but as part of hyphenated trend we saw alot of Lily-May, Ava-May.... But that won't be a concern to everyone.

babyjellyfish · 09/02/2022 11:18

It's sweet, but doesn't really give any nickname options if the child wants them. (Perhaps the lack of scope for nicknames is the whole point; my son has a name that can't really be lengthened or shortened, although he now has a whole host of ridiculous nicknames.)

You could go for something like Mabel, Margaret, Mary or Madeleine with May as a nickname.

ExpectingLady93 · 09/02/2022 13:03

Thank you both!

I think it’s sweet.

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/02/2022 18:51

It’s lovely, but it’s been overdone.

It was traditionally a nn for Mary, so you could give her a fuller name like Marianne, Maria or Rosemary with May as a nn, so she has options

PlanetNormal · 09/02/2022 18:52

Theresa.

BrambleRoses · 09/02/2022 18:52

I think it’s really pretty and quite unusual as a first name - more common as a middle name.

SilkySusan · 09/02/2022 19:03

It's been overdone as a hyphenated or middle name, but I don't know single one who has it as a standalone first name. It's pretty. I like it a lot.

Moonface123 · 09/02/2022 19:07

Beautiful, as is the month of May. l don' t think its been over done at all.

amylou8 · 09/02/2022 19:19

I like it. It's my daughter's middle name.

TenThousandSpoons · 09/02/2022 19:20

I like it. Especially if she’s born in May.

Bluemamma · 09/02/2022 20:02

I love it as a first name. It’s pretty and simple. Please don’t call her marry or Margaret and call her May🙈 that’s just bonkers. May is beautiful and classy on its own

Laureatus · 09/02/2022 20:09

My mum's middle name is May, simply because she was born in May. She hates it and wishes her parents had given her a more meaningful middle name!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/02/2022 20:31

Gorgeous - sweet sounding with lovely nature links, yet classic and very elegant. Criminally underused as a first name imo, yet so ubiquitous as middle name now that she will still "fit in" very well with the names of her peers.

I can only think May's not more popular as a first name because of the potential spelling issues (Mae/Mai) and that that some parents might prefer names with nn options (although I suppose she could lengthen it if she really wants too, eg. Maisie).

Otherwise I can't figure out why there aren't more May's (especially when ubiquitous middle names Rose and Grace are popular as first names too) - it's such a lovely name!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/02/2022 20:40

Oh btw - yes, while May can be a traditional nn (for Mary or Margaret), it's been used as a name separately in it's own right as it also has a completely separate etymology (so isn't like "Jack" for John etc). May was popular in the Victorian age as a floral girls name along with all the other better known ones - Lily, Rose etc because of the May flower.

Bofthebang · 09/02/2022 20:42

It’s a beautiful name 😊

Name of both my grandmothers who were amazing ladies so I’m probably biased, but as a stand-alone name I think it’s just lovely!

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 09/02/2022 20:51

I love the name.

My MIL is May. My daughter's MIL is June. My son's MIL is April. We also have a Mabel.

strawberrymilkshake123 · 10/02/2022 13:08

I really, really like May, ( was one of my nan's middle names), and I would use it as a first name; except DP really wants to use Maria as a middle name and I don't think May Maria goes.

FancySusan · 10/02/2022 13:19

My Mum is called May and whilst she likes the name she says people often mishear her when she introduces herself.

Also, she says that when she says 'hello it's May' on the phone people, think she says 'hello it's me' which she hates.

There might be no such thing as phone calls without video soon though!

Enko · 10/02/2022 13:23

I dont like it find it quite dull and boring personally
