Hi i recently came across the name Harlow, both myself and partner like the name and one of the only ones we agree on-
I love Ada, olive, & willow

But I recently searched up on the name Harlow and there’s so much stigma about how horrendous the name is and that people wouldn’t use it, as it’s an old town in Essex ( had no idea the place existed)

Is this still the case what are peoples opinion on the name HARLOW XX

Hate it, sorry!

Ada, Olive and Willow are lovely names.

SummaLuvin · 09/02/2022 11:13

Harlow isn't my cup of tea sonically, but I don't have any negative associations with it. I think people can be very snobby when it comes to names, and love to say they are 'downmarket' - which is really just code for "I think a lot of poor people use this name".

Worth bearing in mind that you are asking this on a name forum, the people frequenting this board and commenting are likely to have much stronger opinions than the general public as they are clearly here as they have an interest in names. This forum is also not a perfect cross section of society, I would say the forum skews white and (aspiring) middle-class, and those things have an impact on how well received a name might be here. This isn't to say the comments you get here have no value, just to take them with a pinch of salt.

I know a dog called Harlow , it really suits her . I could not imagine it being a child's name thou .

Synchrony · 09/02/2022 11:17

Personally hate it. It does immediately make me think of the town, which isn't the most scenic place. But it's not my baby.

BasiliskFace · 09/02/2022 11:21

Well, I am from Essex so it does say "concretey new town" to me, devoid of any other context.
But if someone was called Harlow I think I would quickly associate it with them not the town.
I don't think I myself would particularly want to be called Harlow.

Fl0w3ry · 09/02/2022 11:31

I know a Harlow. It’s not a name I like, but I don’t associate it with a town because I also did not know it is the name of a town.

Evanesco · 09/02/2022 11:34

I like it, I don't live in the south east so had never heard of the town in Essex and have only ever heard about it on here.

I also like Marlow / Marlowe (and Arlo! Grin)

Mumofgirls2017 · 09/02/2022 11:40

I like it, but know a lot associate it with the town.

What about

Harper
Marlow
Piper
Harley
Marnie
Iris
Ivy
Ida
Ottilie
Juno
Cleo

User19903 · 09/02/2022 12:00

Ida-
Maybe that could be an alternative to Ada
Husband may approve ☺️

I know an Ida (pronounced Eeda) who is Danish.

I think it's a gorgeous name. Although you would probably need to tell people whether it's pronounced Eeda or Eye-da.

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/02/2022 18:54

It’s a bit downmarket.

Adela maybe?
Ines
Jasmine
Edith

Yika · 09/02/2022 19:36

I rather like it. I like Essex! The only thing is it sounds a bit like Harlot.

FlamingoDust · 10/02/2022 10:20

Not keen and the only ones I have met have been boys (met 3 under 10).

Babydust13 · 10/02/2022 10:41

I really like it

WhoppingBigBackside · 10/02/2022 12:19

It's not an old town, it's a 'new town' so it's a bit like calling a child Bracknell, Milton Keynes or Stevenage.

Think of how Margot is pronounced Margo and the 'Harlot with a silent t' association is too strong

AngelDelightUk · 10/02/2022 12:23

I’ve only met boy Harlow’s but I think it’s prettier as a girls name. I didn’t know it was a town!

londongirl2701 · 14/02/2022 00:00

Harlow is about 20 minutes from where I live and I certainly would not want my child's name associated with it, it's not just an old town it is an absolute dive ! Your other names are much nicer and prettier x

Chichimcgee · 14/02/2022 00:03

I know I’m likely on my own with this but I have a thing for name meanings and wouldn’t call my daughter ‘pile of rocks’ although I do know name meanings don’t matter to a lot of people!

blameitonthecaffeine · 15/02/2022 10:16

I quite like it. Certainly prefer it to Olive and possibly to Willow too.

Ada is my favourite from your choices though, I think it's lovely.

If you want Harlow, I might be tempted to add an e on the end for a girl. I think it's spelled like that in the US where it will be more popular for girls than it is here I imagine. If you like that American surname trend, how about:
Addison, Bailey, Colby, Dylan, Emerson, Fallon, Madison, Mackenzie, McKinley, Paisley, Payton, Parker, Quinn, Riley, Reagan, Sutton, Spencer, Sydney, Taylor

user1493494961 · 15/02/2022 10:19

One letter away from harlot.

emmathedilemma · 15/02/2022 10:53

I'd associate Harlow as being a town too (never actually been). Your other names are lovely, particularly Ada and Olive.
Ivy?
Iris?

Cakeybubblespink · 15/02/2022 20:46

Ada, olive and willow are beautiful names. A friend of mine has named her dd Harley and I think this is nice.
