Cora pronunciation?

Think I love the girls name Cora... how is it pronounced / how would you pronounce it as default though?

From looking online, advice seems to vary between CORE-ah (rhymes with flora and dora, where the first syllable is pronounced like apple core); and C-OR-a / Cawr-a (where the first syllable rhymes with for!)

Not sure if this is an accent / regional difference or not... votes please!

coe-ra and floe-ra make no phonetic sense

hivemindneeded · 06/02/2022 22:08

Caw-ruh

KimikosNightmare · 06/02/2022 22:09

@PunsDontKillPeople

For and core rhyme though, so... Confused

I can't see how your two pronunciations differ?

No they don't
MajorCarolDanvers · 06/02/2022 22:10
@MajorCarolDanvers Oh I don't watch downton! I'll need to tune in for reference, didn't realise there was a Cora on there, thanks!
@crabette

One of the main characters is Cora Crawley is the Countess of Grantham. An American heiress whose dowry saved the family. She is a fabulous and glamourous character and she will make you love the name Cora all the more.

crabette · 06/02/2022 22:10

@mistermagpie Oh that's good to know!!! I love Cora pronounced that way (like Flora, Dora).... just wasn't sure if it was an ambiguous pronunciation or if people would assume Caw-ra, which would be annoying!

@PurplePizzaCake

I'm confused!

To me four, for, drawer, nor and core all rhyme

Me too, it must be an accent thing.

@StrychnineIntheSandwiches

coe-ra and floe-ra make no phonetic sense
They make perfect sense in my accent.

There are many accents in the United Kingdom that sound very different.

BlueOysterCult · 06/02/2022 22:11

I know a Cora who pronounces it coh-ra (so a bit like coral without the L). I find I'm constantly having to correct myself because my head wants it it to rhyme with Flora or Dora. Much prefer the regular pronunciation (rhyming with Flora).

StrychnineIntheSandwiches · 06/02/2022 22:12

Well it is probably sensible to state one's accent when claiming Flora = floe-ra.

KimikosNightmare · 06/02/2022 22:13

@zurala

Core, for and drawer all rhyme in my South Eastern accent.
None of them rhyme with each other.

Core rhymes with Dora, Flora, core , door and four.

For rhymes with nor

Drawer - draw part rhymes with raw.

ittakes2 · 06/02/2022 22:14

We have Coras in our family. We prounce it Core-a.

Luredbyapomegranate · 06/02/2022 22:15

@EllaB22

Rhymes with Flora/Cora. I have also seen the spelling Kora.
CORE-AH Same as an apple core Rhymes with Flora

But do not, in the name of all that is holy, spell it Kora

runningoutofnewnames · 06/02/2022 22:16
@PunsDontKillPeople see I think this might be an accent / regional thing... to me for and core sound totally different 😂

Here, core rhymes with FOUR.

For rhymes with... drawer? Or nor? 😂🤷🏻‍♀️
South East here.

Core, four, nor, for, floor, sore, saw, draw - they all rhyme.

HalloHello · 06/02/2022 22:16

My head hurts

crabette · 06/02/2022 22:16

@StrychnineIntheSandwiches

😂 I'm pretty sure the default here for Flora would be Floe-ra / Flow-ra. Not Flaw-ra. Hence my question!

Ohlalaohlala · 06/02/2022 22:18

I’d say core-ah like an apple corer.
I know a Cora and that’s how it’s pronounced.

runningoutofnewnames · 06/02/2022 22:19

As do poor, pour and paw - all exactly the same sound in a London / SE accent.

But, they're all different in various Scottish accents for example.

Where are you from, OP?

crabette · 06/02/2022 22:20

@runningoutofnewnames yep, west of Scotland. I'm so confused! 😂

None of those words sound the same - whether Scottish accent or RP.

Erm, but I don't speak with a Scottish accent nor RP, so how is that relevant?

I grew up in London and I can assure you all those words sound the same in my accent.

BeefSupreme · 06/02/2022 22:27

I don't think many would pronounce it Caw-ra. People would see it and think it must rhyme with Flora and Dora.

Marcipex · 06/02/2022 22:28

I’d rhyme it with Flora.

Why not spell it with a K? Isn’t it from the Greek, like Dora? Kora must be the earlier spelling?

ColdShouldersWarmTummy · 06/02/2022 22:31

We have a Cora and DH is from Glasgow. He helpfully says "tell her it's pronounced with a D" Hmm.

It rhymes with Flora Smile

dementedpixie · 06/02/2022 22:31

I know a Corra and her name is pronounced C-orr-a
Cora would rhyme with core-a

Think Corra Linn is a waterfall in Scotland
