A Hebrew name for girls.

What do you think? Would it work in the UK/do you like it? We are not in the UK but family and friends are/are British, so the name needs to work there too.

Thanks!

Also like Aliza (A-lee-zuh), Keziah (Keh-ZYE-uh), Noa, Yael, Jemimah.

I like it. I’m pronouncing it with a Z more like the American Zee like Celia.

It’s unusual to me but not weird

hivemindneeded · 06/02/2022 19:30

I love it.

First impression is that I like it, but then I seem to like most Z names.
Is it pronounced Zee-lia or Zay-lia?

Rosieposie101 · 07/02/2022 04:11

It can be either Zay-lee-uh or Zee-lee-uh. Smile Which do you like best?

My Portuguese friend is named Zelia; there was also a Zelia in my school when I was a child. It's pronounced to rhyme with deli then a on the end (THEH-lee-ah). My friend is such a lovely kind warm positive person that the name has happy connotations for me. But some people shorten it to Thelly with personally I like less (she doesn't seem to mind the diminution, though).

I think this is a different variant of the name - the name is used in several countries with several different backgrounds (French, Hebrew, Greek, to name a few) so the deli-uh pronunciation is one of the used pronunciations but we think it's the one we like least? Although we like them all. We had previously decided to pick between zay-lia or Zee-lia, but zeli-uh sounds nice again! So maybe we will add that back to the list (but with a regular 'z' sound) and see what people think sounds nicest, as we can't decide!

Lovely name I met one recently, she pronounced it Zee-lia. Once you say which way you prefer it people should remember easily

DotDotDotDotDot · 07/02/2022 13:43

I think I’d choose the Zay-lia pronunciation if it’s “correct”. Saying that all 3 pronunciations sound nice to me. Good luck.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 07/02/2022 18:40

Pretty name. It would work better in the UK with the "Zay -lia" (my personal fave) or "Zel -ia" pronunciations, as similar sounding Shakespearean Celia ("Cee- lia") is far better known here and could cause confusion when people first hear "Zee -lia"- but that might well not be an issue outside the UK?

I like Keziah a lot too - but again that would have spelling and pronunciation issues here in the UK which it might not where you live.

Synchrony · 07/02/2022 18:59

I like it. I assumed Zee-lia.

Classica · 07/02/2022 19:33

Pretty name! I like the Zay-lee-uh pronunciation as there's less chance it will be mistaken for Celia.

Luredbyapomegranate · 07/02/2022 19:34

I think it’s ok.

To rhyme with Celia is more intuitive and probably nicer.
