Hi there, I'm due my second son who will be a brother to my first born named Alfie... We're really struggling to find a name that we love though, the only name that I really like is freddie.... However I read a thread from a few years ago discussing these two names together with some saying they both come from the name Alfred... Can I have peoples honest thoughts on the names Alfie and Freddie together for siblings please?

I love them both

DramaAlpaca · 04/02/2022 17:33

If you like them/that style of name they're fine together. Alfie is a diminutive of Alfred and Freddie derives from Frederick.

Dottychickens · 04/02/2022 17:37

I know 2 little boys called Alfie and both have a brother called Freddie, so I guess they go together Smile

mnahmnah · 04/02/2022 17:38

Absolutely fine. As the proud owner of a Freddie, you will probably end up calling him Fred most of the time. Alfie and Fred sound fab.

toastofthetown · 04/02/2022 17:42

I'd want to smush them together and call then Alfreddie as a collective! Personally, I don't like them together but it's not awful. As adults most people they come across won't know their brother's name so as long as names don't rhyme or have a massive cultural association as pair then I don't think sibling's names are massively important.

hivemindneeded · 04/02/2022 17:48

I love both names but am not sure about the two together. Alfie is a diminutive of Alfred so already has the name Fred in it (unless your son has Alfie as a full name in itself.

I'd keep looking for another name that isn't so close.

Blubells · 04/02/2022 19:35

Alfie (Alfred) is indeed very similar to Frederick as both contain Fred.

If you like the names, why not?!

Vallmo47 · 04/02/2022 19:45

I have a family member whose boys are called Alfie and Freddie too! They clearly work for quite a few?!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 04/02/2022 20:22

While the names aren't my personal taste, I think they work together fine as a sibset (it's also very likely more Freddie's are really Frederick's than Alfred's (or Wilfred's)- if they were given a longer BC version at all).

IntoTheNight · 04/02/2022 20:24

Totally fine to use them together imo

If you were being picky then I guess both could be nns for Alfred, but both get used as standalone names these days

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/02/2022 20:28

I don't like diminutives as primary names. But they do go together.

SailingNotSurfing · 04/02/2022 20:36

Perfect names.

mondler · 04/02/2022 22:48

I think they go well together Smile

Luredbyapomegranate · 05/02/2022 12:01

Freddie comes from Alfred or Frederick - so you can call him Frederick nn Freddie if you want?

VanillaAndOrange · 08/02/2022 21:44

I've met two brothers with those names! Neither is really my cup of tea, but I do think they go really well together, and if you're not using the long forms at all, then it doesn't really matter that they could theoretically share a long form.

LuckyAmy1986 · 09/02/2022 15:45

Not my cup of tea in terms of the names but yes I do think they go well together

thelittlestrhino · 09/02/2022 15:55

I know a pair of brothers called Alfie and Freddie too, so not that uncommon. Nice names, together or separately IMO

bloominglovelyorange · 09/02/2022 15:58

Lovely names. Work well together

TakeMe2Insanity · 10/02/2022 20:15

The Alfie and Freddie I know are best friends!

Thedogscollar · 10/02/2022 20:55

Lovely choice. Go for it.

Hibye23289 · 10/02/2022 20:56

I know someone who has both of their names, i have never thought anything of it

SalsaLove · 10/02/2022 20:57

No, not really, and they’re decidedly English so no chance of international understanding.
