Miroslava

What's your verdict on this girl's name?
I really love it. It's used in my husband's country of origin, but is still quite unusual (although widely known) there. It means peace and glory, so it's kind of a double barrelled name... I thought it could be shortened to Mira if people struggle with it in the UK. I quite like strong names with lots of rich sounds like Ms and Rs... My husband, however, says in his country it sounds like the name of a villager Hmm that doesn't mean much to me haha but I think what he means is it sounds like a country bumpkin kind of name? Grin we only go to his home country for summer holidays and Christmas though, so it's more important how people will take it in the UK. I don't want to go with it if it sounds overly pretentious or not particularly pretty to English ears... What's your opinion on it?

@PattyPan

Slave comes from the word Slav, because Slavs were captured as slaves in medieval times.
Interesting! Didn't know that

@HacerSonarSusPasos

I love the sound of Mira, but Miroslava does sound a bit easter european peasant woman (and i am eastern european lol).

How about... Miruna? Milena? Vera? Romina? Magda?

Yes, I also like Marina and Miriam :)

Miriam and Marina work well as international names in a number of languages. I've worked with Marinas from Spain, Bulgaria and Indonesia!

Flutterflybutterby · 01/02/2022 13:53

It sounds more like a place name than a person's name to me

StopForAMinute · 01/02/2022 13:59

I love Marina. Not so keen on Miroslava but the nickname Mira is nice.

Strange, so many people have said that. To me it definitely sounds like a person's name, as there are so many eastern European names that end in slav/slava: Stanislav, Yaroslav, Sviatoslav, Rostislav, Mstislav... with female versions having the "a". I don't know of any countries that end in slav/slava... unless people are thinking of the stans (Kazakhstan etc)?

I like ´Mira’ which is liked to the word ´peace’ but also ´world’ right? And your little girl will be your world :)

Mrs Miroslava Federer (yes, that one) is always known as Mirka.

GlumyGloomer · 01/02/2022 14:28

I recognise the name as the heroine from the movie 'I am Dragon'. Based on that I think its quite cool.

Mama1980 · 01/02/2022 15:04

I really like it but agree it is likely to be shortened/become Mirka or another variation.

HangoverSquare · 01/02/2022 15:10

Not a country but maybe they're reminded of Bratislava. And former Yugoslavia.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 01/02/2022 15:14

There are bound to be a ton of 'Mira' s being named shortly after Mirabel in Encanto so I would keep that in mind.

It's nice to give a nod to your DHs culture but not if he doesn't like the name too. You need to find one you both like.

miltonj · 01/02/2022 15:15

Think it sounds like a country to be honest. But it's almost there, I can see how something similar would be nice!

TheBeesKnee · 01/02/2022 15:15

No one in England will be able to pronounce it. Don't set your kid up for a struggle from day one.

It does sound like a narod name but that's the least of your worries.

Sincerely, someone with an Eastern European name which has been butchered all my life to the point that I just use a western sounding short version.

summerhillgang · 01/02/2022 15:16

Mira is nicer

Yes, he said it might grow on him but there are other names we both really like (Naomi, Miriam and Marina) so we'll probably go with one of those. I was thinking about it from his perspective, and I would hate to feel compelled to call my child "Trevor" or "Jordyn" just because my partner loved it Grin

@Iamanicepersonreally

It's OK. It sounds like the name of a country to me.
Yes me too.

Maybe something like Mariana instead?

CatsArePeople · 01/02/2022 22:13

it's ok, but clunky. she will be Mira or Slava or whatever else.

GlamGiraffe · 01/02/2022 22:36

Mira on its own is nice. Even in London i can still see what your husband means about Miraslava sounding like a country name though. It will make a difference to him because of how he feels his relatives etc will view it too i would imagine.

Thirtytimesround · 01/02/2022 23:01

Makes me think of Miroslav Radic and the wars, also slave. I’d go for Mira but lose the slava personally.

That would be Mirr-a, though

The Slavic prounciation is Meer-a

But it might get confusable, and that might be a pita

LethargicActress · 02/02/2022 08:09

My first thought was that it sounds like the name of a country too.

Naomi is lovely though.

Ceramide · 02/02/2022 08:35

I like the alternatives of Miriam and Marina.

I don't like the ending of Miraslava as it reminds me of the word slaver (meaning to drool or slobber).

busyeatingbiscuits · 02/02/2022 08:47

The Slava part doesn't sound particularly elegant to British ears, and the whole name is maybe a bit midde aged? Reminds me of an Eastern European Dolores or Pauline.

Mira, Mila, Marina, Mariana are all lovely though.
