First names ending in O

I need opinions on first names ending in an ‘Oh’ sound if baby will have an O’Surname!

I.e Theo O’Surname
Cleo O’Surname etc

Or is it a bit too much of a mouthful?!

My first thought was yes, too much, but then I tried it.
Cleo O'Rourke sounds good.
Theo O'Donell, too.
I guess it depends on the surname !

Cocogreen · 01/02/2022 04:30

Orlando O'Surname is fine too

BunnyRuddington · 01/02/2022 07:51

Matteo
Lorenzo
Otto
Hugo
Rollo

Indigo
Meadow
Cleo
Juno
Margot
Isabeau
Dido

I'd find it a bit of a tongue-twister TBH.

SpideySenseTingles · 01/02/2022 07:55

I think it can sound nice, but we aren't going to talk about Bruno, no, no, no. Grin

FindingMeno · 01/02/2022 07:57

I think it can work.

mizzo · 01/02/2022 07:57

I think it's too clunky and one of the O's will get lost, Hugo O'Conner will sound like Hugo Conner or Cleo O'Reilly will sound like Cle O'Reilly.

TabithaTittlemouse · 01/02/2022 07:57

I like it!

Lemonweightloss · 01/02/2022 08:33

@mizzo, see, I think they're good examples as to why it DOES work ! They sound good to me.
You have to put emphasis on thee O' ( which I guess not everyone will do. So you may be right!)
@Rookie2022, may I sit on the fence on this one?

WindInTheWillows7 · 01/02/2022 13:41

Of course it's fine! :) I think we can really overthink these things

ISmellBurnings · 01/02/2022 14:39

@SpideySenseTingles

I think it can sound nice, but we aren't going to talk about Bruno, no, no, no. Grin
And it’s back in my head……aaaaagh!!! (Love it really).
Luredbyapomegranate · 01/02/2022 19:02

It's not terrible but it's not great - eg Thea O'Rouke sounds better than Theo O'Rourke, Leon O'Sullivan sounds better than Leo O'Sullivan

Yika · 01/02/2022 19:04

No, I don’t think it works, sorry…

Belleager · 01/02/2022 19:26

Sounds fine - know plenty of kids with names like that. I think it helps that you don't get much stress on the O in final position, so it's THE-o O'Brien etc. So Milo O'Connell - fine. Miles O. O'Connell - a bit clunky.

Belleager · 01/02/2022 19:29

I mean if it's a boy and you are bringing him up in Dublin, chances are his friends will go through a stage of sticking an o on the end of his name anyway, so you may as well get in first ...

Rookie2022 · 01/02/2022 19:46

Ohhh such a mixed bag!! There are obviously plenty of nice names not ending in O so maybe I’ll just go with one of those… I just seem to like a disproportionate amount of -O names!

@Belleager we’re not actually Irish at all! Well there must’ve been someone at some point… but long before living memory!

Rookie2022 · 01/02/2022 19:49

Would it be more acceptable if there was a ‘long’ name and only the nickname ended in O?!

I.e Theodore O’Name, known as Theo
Cleopatra O’Name known as Cleo

(*names are for example purposes only… not actually considering calling our firstborn Cleopatra haha)

Theodore O’Name, known as Theo
Cleopatra O’Name known as Cleo

They don't work because they'll almost certainly be Shortname Surname except at home.

PoleFairy · 02/02/2022 16:40

I actually dont like it. It's a bit of a tongue twister for me. Ivo O'connor is a bit much and if I heard it would probably think "how did their parents not realise that?!"

babyjellyfish · 02/02/2022 19:20

I think it sounds clunky, sorry.

Rookie2022 · 02/02/2022 20:32

@PoleFairy well that’s made my mind up! Because I HAVE noticed it without anyone even pointing it out so surely others will too!

My soon-to-be child thanks everyone for their input!
