We've definitely decided on Eileen, but are stuck for a middle name that sounds nice with it. Any ideas, please?

I am secondary school teacher so I have come across a huge variety of names.

Unless you have a very very strong, inexorable reason, I would think carefully about calling her that.

Confused

And why is that? I’d understand if she was naming her Princess-Pants or naming a boy Amelia or calling the child Lemonade but this is just a name. It’s not like there’s some dark association with it. Obviously there’s come on Eileen which as a sentence isn’t great but give her a good middle name and if it’s intolerable she can use that.

lostteaspoon · 30/01/2022 20:28

Aw I like it! I’ve only ever known one Eileen - a Scottish lady, she’d be in her 60s now.

I like Eileen Kate or Eileen Mary

BigYellowHat · 30/01/2022 20:33

Are you giving birth to a 50 year old?

Iamtheweedonkey · 30/01/2022 20:38

Jeez! There are some beautiful, classic names that you can use. Eileen is not one of them.

What a vacuous comment.

You do know that every 50 year old was once a cute baby Hmm

Eileen Joy
Eileen Grace
Eileen Anne

celestebellman · 30/01/2022 21:29

I don't think the song is going to be massively on her peers' radars.

I get that people probably currently think of someone in their sixties being called Eileen, but if you remove this connotation it is quite a nice sound - and the initial syllable fits with the trendy vowel heavy names such as Isla/ Ella so it's not much of a departure.

I think it will be ahead of its time, and possibly quite fashionable in around 20 years!

And more importantly every cute baby will only be a cute baby for a year, two years if they’re particularly cute.

Too many people name a baby and don’t bother about the fact that they’ll be an adult most of their life.

50 year olds are called Sarah and Claire

80 and 90 year olds are called Eileen

Which probably means it’s due a revival. If Arnold, Ernest, Jean and Vera are all on the rise, it’s probably next.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 30/01/2022 21:44

Eileen Dexy

Sounds cute. And it’s a nice tribute to the band.

BlanketSky · 30/01/2022 21:50

My Nan was Eileen Alice. She was known as Eily when she was little.

I teach a teenage Eileen, it suits her. I wouldn't imagine many of her peers know the song. Nor some of her teachers for that matter!

BrennieGirl · 30/01/2022 21:54

My 14 year old Eileen's second name is Nora after her great granny. We rarely hear the song but when we do she's loves it!!

Obviously I love the name. I really don't understand all the hate.

JurgensCakeBabyJesus · 30/01/2022 22:03

I really like Eileen , it's not hate from me, I bloody love that song. I'd also ensure a teenage Eileen has access to a badge/patch for a bag/oversized stonewashed denim jacket that says 'far too young and clever'. Embrace it

I have seen what kids can do to each other's names, and what they do in the reports etc they have. A name like that is going to be hard to carry and easy for fellow students to adapt and use to tease if they choose.

But then so are other names I suppose. And it is my opinion to at least have a good alternative nickname.

She’d love that!
WeasilyPleased · 30/01/2022 22:20

Eh? Its not particularly my cuppa but I can't see massive teasing potential. For a mn, I think Eileen Matilda is cute.

TabithaHazel · 30/01/2022 22:21

Eileen is not a pretty sounding name, so I'd suggest something prettier as a middle name so she could use that instead if she wishes. How about:
Eileen Willow
Eileen Cordelia
Eileen Sylvie
Eileen Aurelia
Eileen Lucinda

Thirtytimesround · 30/01/2022 22:21

Eileen Kay
Eileen Amy
Eileen Rosa

ladygindiva · 30/01/2022 22:22

Eileen Theresa
Eileen Matilda
Eileen jennifer
Eileen Mae
Eileen Lois
Eileen Ruby
Eileen Tamsin
Eileen Kara
I like it x

@LavenderHills we need an idea of your surname, for a random name! Don't you have a family name you want to use?

Derrymum123 · 30/01/2022 22:25

Eileen Mary
Eileen Matilda
Eileen Grace
Eileen Faith
Eileen Hope

DoNotIron · 30/01/2022 22:35

80 and 90 year olds are called Eileen

@Luredbyapomegranate Well, how very dare you?😀😀 I'm an Eileen in her fifties. You're not wrong though - as per my post upthread!!

Yeshkimesh · 30/01/2022 22:40

Something nice. So she can use it when she gets laughed at for being called Eileen
