Any thoughts on Zerelda as a Babyname for a girl?

Totally Malory Towers. And not a very pleasant association, so would be hard on the child if she ended up reading the books, or her friends did.

(Not Alison who had a crush on her, though; she had a crush on an equally air-headed American character called Sadie, in the St Clare's series. Enid Blyton was fond of American stereotypes!).

BelindaBumcrack · 27/01/2022 21:02

I don't like it. It sounds like a name for a disinfectant or toilet cleaner to me. Possibly too close to Zoflora.

I would have hated to have been called it.

Desert76 · 27/01/2022 21:04

WorstXmas, Gleb isn't a made up name, it's a very old Slavic name. St Boris and St Gleb were Russian saints.
(Admittedly it's a bit like calling a child something like Ethelred, but it's not made up)

ToffeeForEveryone · 27/01/2022 21:09

I think the general consensus is why would you do this to a child.

Esme is fine?

Totalwasteofpaper · 27/01/2022 21:10

Just no. Sorry but honestly I’d laugh if someone told me they called their child

IsadoraQuagmire · 27/01/2022 21:13

Everyone will immediately think of Zerelda Brass, I've always liked her though (and her favourite movie star Lossie Laxton)Grin

simonisnotme · 27/01/2022 21:14

I just think of the nintendo game of Zelda
duff name for a kid though

Ceramide · 27/01/2022 21:35

Trying too hard to sound alternative.

ISeeTheLight · 27/01/2022 21:36

Sounds like a cleaning product. Reminds me of Zoflora. Sorry.

Campervan69 · 27/01/2022 21:49

Hideous.

You're right! She arrived with Darrell in the car. Alison was St Clares

I was an eight year old Malory Towers reader unfamiliar with 1940s hairstyles, and wondering how on earth you did your hair with a big ‘roll’ on top. Grin

Other than Enid Blyton, my only other association with the name is that the outlaw Jesse James was married to a Zerelda Mimms.

Luredbyapomegranate · 28/01/2022 10:36

She sounds like a troublemaking bit part in The Gilded Age

It's OK as long as she has a big personality.

CaffiSaliMali · 28/01/2022 10:52

I quite like it. I knew I'd encountered it before but had forgotten the Mallory Towers character!

It gives me a witchy vibe too, probably because of Aunt Zelda from Sabrina. I like names with a witchy vibe though like Sabrina, Morven, Morwenna and Morgana so a witchy vibe wouldn't put me off a name.

HacerSonarSusPasos · 28/01/2022 11:09

Nope.

It one of those pretentious made-up names. Plus it sounds like the name of a drug or pharmaceutical company.

NoraLuka · 28/01/2022 11:20

Touristy suburb of Algiers. It’s got a nice beach.

Is The Gilded Age any good?
Synchrony · 28/01/2022 12:26

I really like it! It did make me think of Malory Towers, but that character was generous and good natured for all her faults. I think it's beautiful sounding.

Pemba · 28/01/2022 13:28

It's a bit OTT.

Ellmau · 28/01/2022 20:57

In my kids class there is a kid called "Gleb"...made up names are silly IMO

Gleb isn't made up, it's a Russian name.

Pasdelacasa · 28/01/2022 21:01

It sounds like two names squished together.

‘My dad’s called Gerald and my Mum’s called Zelda, so they called me Zerelda’ sort of thing.

Not very nice.

Aquamarine1029 · 28/01/2022 21:03

Evil witch in the next Disney movie.

MeredithGreyishblue · 29/01/2022 12:32

@WorstXmasEver

They'd just get called Zelda.

There's a Strictly dancer called Gleb. He's Russian

So, no, not silly. Just out of your frame of reference.

As are the other Zereldas that other people have mentioned!

Kittymum7 · 29/01/2022 14:16

Just no. Your kid will hate you for giving them a weird name.

Synchrony · 29/01/2022 21:01

Or they might love having a name that sounds like a film star, rather than being one of a million Ellies.
