Middle name after miscarriages + Irish help

I had 2 mc's and this pregnancy was twins but we've lost one. Everything is looking great with this baby, so we are very excited! I would normally be one for thinking middle names aren't too important I barely use mine. But we want to pick something meaningful, not sure that's the right word, to show what the baby means to us. These are my thoughts:

Girl, Clara:
Joy
Hope
Faith
Grá (means love and my DSis who died young was called Gráinne) but

I don't know if that might upset me a bit, I think it might

Boy, Pádraig:
Éadrom (means light, but I'm not sure how to pronounce it)
Beannacht (means blessing - I like the meaning not the word really)
Cannot think of anything nice in English for a boy

Very open to suggestions in any language. Finding it harder to find something for a boy! I did suggest Lumière, DH wasn't sure but flat our said no when I told him about the Beauty and the Beast connection Grin

I think we are fairly set on the first names. I've loved the name Clara since she was a character in a book I read donkeys years ago. It's gaining popularity here, but not so much it would put me off. Pádraig I just think is a great name, it's not common but definitely known. My Grandfather who I adored was Patrick.

I'm not due for months so could possibly completely change my mind again. Also both Irish, living in Ireland, but both have a very poor grasp of Irish.

You've been through a lot, irishfarmer. I'm sorry for your losses.

Do you mean light as in opposite of dark or opposite of heavy?

irishfarmer · 25/01/2022 10:13

@Apileofballyhoo as in opposite to darkness. Lighting a candle.

It's not Irish sorry but Gabriel? Or Nathaniel apparently means 'messenger from God' too.

Tullig · 25/01/2022 10:19

Éadrom is ‘light’ as in the opposite of heavy, so not that. Light in the sense of the opposite of darkness is ‘solas’ ( pronounced ‘sulus’, roughly) Or what about ‘Loinnir’, (roughly ‘linnir’ in my accent) which means shine or gleam? Or ‘Gile’ (brightness)? Pron ‘gilleh’ with a hard g, as in gate’?

Sorry for your loss, @irishfarmer. Flowers

Tullig · 25/01/2022 10:21

Or Réalt (star), which is sometimes used as a name, though usually for girls with a diminutive, as ‘Réaltín’?

irishfarmer · 25/01/2022 10:26

@Tullig thanks, I knew I shouldn't just rely on google translate! I have a Gaeilgeoir friend who I was planning on running things by once I had more of an idea. I didn't do Irish passed primary school so it's very poor. Réalt is lovely, is that where Reidin would come from?

@lemonyfox doesn't have to be Irish, I like Nathaniel

Lots of ordinary Irish names also mean things like light, bright, or radiant — Niamh, for instance.

Happenchance · 25/01/2022 10:59

Clara Dove

Pádraig Lucian/Lucius (light)
Matthan (gift or hope of the lord)
Jonas/Jonah (Dove)

SageRosemary · 25/01/2022 11:42

Aingeal/Angela - angel
Laoise (lee-sha) - radiant girl - Lucy, Louise
Aisling - a dream or vision

For a boy, Fionn - comes from the old Irish word for white/brilliant light.
Luca - shining, bright
Benedict - a blessed boy

PrimroseBed · 25/01/2022 11:49

Lucian- light
Matthew- gift of God

Anotherdayanotheropinon · 25/01/2022 15:20

For girls you don’t necessarily need to go Irish @irishfarmer
Iris - means rainbow
Evelyn - means wished for/longed for child
Eva - means life

I like a PP suggestion of Fionn - I think it goes well with Padraig.

I’ve gone through lots of infertility and finally pregnant so I’ve been thinking along these names too (Clara also on my shortlist Smile I love Evelyn and it’s meaning but DH doesn’t unfortunately)

TheWayTheLightFalls · 25/01/2022 15:31

Sending loads of good wishes your way OP.

We had a pregnancy following a (very difficult) loss. We settled on Samuel as a middle name for a boy - in Hebrew it means "God has heard/listened", which felt fitting for me as a Jew - and Iris for a girl.

PurplePansy05 · 25/01/2022 15:34

Seren in Welsh means 'star'.

Just wanted to say, OP, as a fellow mum who lost three babies to MC, it's a beautiful thing you're doing and very thoughtful Flowers Some lovely suggestions on here as well. Good luck with your Rainbow 🌈 xx

PurplePansy05 · 25/01/2022 15:35

Also, Enfys in Welsh means 'rainbow'. Both lovely names 😊 xx

irishfarmer · 25/01/2022 15:46

No, I'm not looking for just Irish names open to any language.

@Anotherdayanotheropinon Clara Iris sounds good I think. Fionn with Pádraig is good too, Fionn is super popular but I don't think that will matter as a middle name. I like the meaning of Evelyn too

@PurplePansy05 sorry you lost 3 too Flowers I like Seren

Great suggestions here thanks everyone
