What do you think of this name for a boy? I think it's kind of cool and vintage at the same time

My brother is conrad and uncle (from ireland). Its never shortened to con :S technically any name could be shortened so are you limitied to a 3 letter name? I think its unique and strong and not over popular (just by chance i know 2 in the family nobody else knows any thay im aware off)

Enko · 27/01/2022 11:12

I have a Conrad he is 20 years old and has never been called Con.

It is 100% a marmite name. When we announced his name the reactions were

I LOVE that.
oh
That's DREADFUL (from my mother! - who 12 years later told me " I always liked the name Conrad its such a good strong name")
and 1 of Dhs friends asked " How did you get away with that?" (apparently he thought it was after some formula 1 racer - was my suggestion)

I love it as a name. Everyone knows it and few know of one. At ds primary school there was 1 dad called Conrad and he said at age 36 our Conrad was the 1st other Conrad he had met.

I know of 1 further but he lives in NZ so never met him. It is not massively popular so has that (to me) perfect " unusual but not weird" set.

As for it being American? HOW ???? It is German /Teutonic just have a quick look at german royal houses and you will see how commonly used it was.

wingsofabird · 27/01/2022 11:29

I absolutely detest it. I'm sorry to me it just conjures up horrible feelings. I guess it's the natural shortening to "con" which is to rip someone off. Awful to my ears

HangingOutTheOldLoveLetters · 27/01/2022 11:31

It's Germanic to me not American.
I like it.
I knew a German Conrad, known as Cord.

3peassuit · 27/01/2022 11:32

Not keen. I’d worry about it being shortened to Con too. It also makes me think of Conrad Black who was a convicted fraudster. Sorry.

HangingOutTheOldLoveLetters · 27/01/2022 11:34

I put it in with Otto, Henry, Frederick, Rudolph type names.

Bonnealle · 27/01/2022 11:47

I also think it sounds American, mostly because the ones I’ve heard of are American (or the footballers’ wives reference) and also the sounds (maybe the ‘rad’ part)! Just because a name originated somewhere else doesn’t stop your own connotations. Magnus is a Roman name, but most people think of Scandinavia or Scotland now.

IronyFreeAnnie · 27/01/2022 11:47

We were going to use it for DS, but his middle name was always going to be Edward. We had a moment where we realised his name could be shortened to Con Ed (an American utility company). May be slightly niche that anyone would make the connection, but once we saw it, it couldn’t be unseen. (And DP started referring to the baby as BritishGas, which didn’t help 😀)

elfran · 27/01/2022 13:04

I love it and briefly considered it when I was pregnant, though the association with Conrad Black was too strong for me in the end. We ended up with a DD and I now realise her name is so similar in sound! So I probably won't be having one in future either.

WildCherryBlossom · 27/01/2022 13:54

I really like Conrad. It was on my list once upon a time but DH didn't like it

yikesanotherbooboo · 27/01/2022 21:00

I know a Conrad, never called anything else. I like it. I don't think it is faddish or for that matter 'American'. If anything it has a vaguely European air .

Someonemustknowtheanswer · 27/01/2022 21:13

Awful

Ceramide · 27/01/2022 21:36

I get pretentious vibes from it

Snowiscold · 27/01/2022 21:37

I really like it. It’s great. Strong, classic European name. I don’t think of it as American at all.

FartnissEverbeans · 27/01/2022 22:23

I love it! We had it high in our lost. In the end we decided it was a bit too posh for the likes of us (though not everyone online agreed when I asked on Mumsnet - some people thought it was chavvy!). We used it as the middle name. I do sometimes still wonder we should have used it as a first name!

HeronLanyon · 27/01/2022 22:28

My mind swerves from 1920s New York or Chicago immigrant tycoon, South American German Nazi in hiding (and not changed his name very well), slight confusion with Conran, Eastern European spy probably on a train, the heart of darkness etc.
Quite a name. I’ve known only one and it really didn’t suit him - he somehow wasn’t a big enough character for it.
Like it.
