Anyone else think in the pursuit for a ‘unique’ name children are getting called more and more ridiculous things?

and what is behind this desire for a unique name! I feel sorry for all the children whose parents seem to want a unique name to satisfy something in themselves without any regard for the poor child saddled with the name.

This also seems to be a new thing in the last 20 or so years - leading to so many made up names.

I tnink those countries that have a register of names are doing the right thing.

See thread on wanting to name child ‘Falcon’ or the ever popular Neveah (it’s heaven backwards) 🙄 and so many other terrible names.

@Supersimkin2

I know two men who had to change their names aged about 8 after bullying re said name ruined their small lives.

Silly, thoughtless parents damage,

That says more about the people bullying than the parents to me.
tilder · 21/01/2022 21:42

Names are such a personal thing. It's easy to be offended or cause offence. Words mean different things to different people. There was a thread about the name Marina. Which to many is a lovely seaside name. To me it's a smelly car park for boats. I just have a different perspective. I wouldn't say anything in real life, but if you ask for opinions on here I will be honest.

I think generally as long as you avoid clangers like Adolf or pornstar names you're ok.

Rubyglitter · 21/01/2022 21:48

All the primary school girls seem to be called Olivia, Ava, Ivy and Isla. I don’t come across many “ridiculous” sounding unusual names in real life.

Stupid bullies!

PossiblyDreaming · 21/01/2022 21:58

I was born in a country with a list of permitted names and then went to school in the UK. I was bullied mercilessly for my name (well, I was ok before the Little Twatting Mermaid came out and I was forever associated with an octopus drag queen). It was actually more the parents who encouraged their kids with their little sniggers at my name. People just like yourself OP, actually thinking how superior you are because you named your children Sophie and James.

BlueFlavour · 21/01/2022 22:09

@PossiblyDreaming
If your name is Ariel it’s one of the most beautiful names ever imho

RogerDodger · 21/01/2022 22:15

@Farrandau

As someone who had four classmates with the same name all through primary, I’m more puzzled as to why people go on and on calling their children Charlie, Jack, Oliver, Sophia and Olivia.
This. Baffles me why people are so boring with their name choices. There are other names than grace and Eva.

I think it might be Ursula.

WeasilyPleased · 21/01/2022 22:21

I was accused today of giving my child a made up name. It is in fact biblical so although it may be extremely unusual here, it is a genuine name.

We live in a very culturally diverse society so maybe don't hoik those judgey pants up too high OP. You may make yourself look silly rather than the parent or the child.

BlueFlavour · 21/01/2022 22:22

That’s lovely also @PossiblyDreaming
My teenage best mate was Ursula. She was great. Still is Grin

Anotherdayanotheropinion · 21/01/2022 22:38

I’m not talking about names that are from different cultures. I’m talking about ridiculous names. Looking for names myself here are some I’ve come across

Sieve (yes someone called their child after a sieve)
Olibia (yoonique version of Olivia)
Andreeea (why!!)
Pinches
Cub

I wouldn’t judge the child but I would certainly judge the parents!

Anotherdayanotheropinion · 21/01/2022 22:40

There are also names in between the ridiculous and the top names of the country for those randomly insisting I’ve called children grace or Sophie 🙄🙄

Blubells · 21/01/2022 22:46

I’m talking about ridiculous names.

In your opinion!

If you can't resist 'judging' these names, at least please don't encourage your children to.

busyeatingbiscuits · 21/01/2022 22:48

I'd personally much rather be named Abcde or Falcon than Jack or Olivia.

Jisforjuggling · 21/01/2022 22:51

Abcde (I’ve met a couple)
Sssst (Forest)
La-a (Ladasha)

DaisyWaldron · 21/01/2022 22:53

Ah, yes. Olibia. A ridiculous, made-up, yoonique name. Imagine applying for a serious job with a name like that!

Except, if you actually look it up, there are plenty of Olibias around, including the Chief Financial Officer of a global investment firm.

midlifecrash · 21/01/2022 23:15

I don’t know why people get steamed up about names, but sometimes I wonder why newer ones are often long and elaborate when you could get a unique one just by altering a vowel. Eg Jan Jen Jin Jon Jun. Why not Jun. Poter, Ilesu, Hirry, Mergot. (Yes I am drinking wine)

chaosrabbitland · 21/01/2022 23:15

@ShippingNews

I heard of a child recently who had the name "You-nique". I guess her parents REALLY wanted a "unique" name.
oh dear and younique is also an overpriced makeup brand sold by way of mlm presenters ! unless of course childs mum is a younique presenter and naming her child after the brand is another way of flogging it lik

Ah but then you have the "trying too hard / pretentious" category at one end of that and "chavvy" at the other end There's very few names MN can be derisive about
RestingStitchFace · 22/01/2022 08:47

@MarshmallowSwede that's so interesting.

I actually wanted to call my son Ivor which I suppose is an anglicised version of Ivar. But my DH didn't like the sound....

Marcipex · 22/01/2022 09:35

@MarshmallowSwede I love the name Anders

Palavah · 22/01/2022 09:50
@HumunaHey if someone calls their kids "kababala" or something ridiculous like that, do you think I'm going to remember a made up word like that when I bump into them every few weeks. Seems a bit mad to me
How does your vraib know to differebtiate between a brand-new, made-up name and one that's established in another language but that you've never heard before?

Unfamiliarity does make it harder to remember but that doesn't mean people should only name their children something you've heard before.

Fleur405 · 22/01/2022 09:50

I’m not a fan personally of weird and wacky names (and I also dislike a non- standard spelling) but ultimately weren't all names made up? Why do we have to say every name that got thought up up to x date is allowed but after that it’s fixed?

Anotherdayanotheropinion · 22/01/2022 09:56

@Blubells 😂😂😂 Consider me corrected. I thought there would be fairly consistent opinions that it’s ridiculous to call a child sieve or pinches. What’s next? Little saucepan? Darling egg-poacher? Little air-fryer. No doubt you also don’t agree that they would be ridiculous names!

And I’m not sure exactly why you’re insisting that finding a name ridiculous = telling children you think do and tell them to bully the child . Typical mumsnet. Suprised you’re not trying to report me to social services or tell my husband to ‘LTB’ 🙄🙄

DoubleHelix79 · 22/01/2022 09:58

@DPotter

Germany has a list of names - not surprisingly Adolf doesn't not appear. But it also used to exclude Islamic & turkish names which was a problem for the large numbers of 'Gastarbeiter' or 'guest workers' from Turkey. I think the list may have been amended to include more suitable names. I don't know of any other countries who have an approved list
Funny enough I know someone born in Germany (in his early fourties, not elderly) whose middle name is Adolf. He was apparently named after his grandfather. I'm not sure how his parents managed it but i suspect there may be route to apply for exceptions.
