Boys names are so difficult!

Looking for some help on boys names for our first child. We already have a few girl names that we love but are really struggling with boys. We have a short surname ‘Jack’ and finding it hard to find names that suit.

We love traditional names that aren’t too out there but have a large family and most are claimed!
I like - Theo, Noah & Finley but wonder if the short names sound strange with our one syllable surname.
Husband likes Thomas & Henry but we are Scottish and Henry sounds a bit funny in our accent.

We both LOVE Jude & Jonah but worried they don’t match the surname either! Having a nightmare and would love some suggestions.

I would go for a two or three syllable name if your surname only has one.

Has Hamish been used in your family yet?

LavenderBlue95 · 20/01/2022 19:39

We have a one syllable surname too and our sons name is Evan. We get lots of compliments on it. I think 2 syllables + for a short surname.

I love Henry :)

NuffSaidSam · 20/01/2022 19:44

I love Jude as well. Any chance you can change your surname?!

I like Ivo (particularly in a Scottish accent).

Other suggestions:

Samuel
Alexander
William
Sebastian
Benjamin
Nathaniel
Gabriel
Edward
Caspian

Aspergirl77 · 20/01/2022 20:15

I think these would sound nice with your surname -

Cameron
Elliott
Finley
Alexander
Oliver
Sebastian

OrangeAndYellowAndBlue · 20/01/2022 20:35

I'm not sure Jude Jack works, but I think Jonah Jack could work! Like a superhero :-)

Finley Jack has a nice ring too.

Alasdair Jack?

ElaineMarieBenes · 20/01/2022 20:47

Logan or Daniel?

Zipper666 · 20/01/2022 20:53

We also have a short three letter surname.
My two sons are Michael and Vincent.
You need AT LEAST two syllable, maybe even three with a short surname.

Cameron and Alistair have a Scottish ring to them.

ElephantOfRisk · 20/01/2022 21:34

I think Jonah works but Jude doesn't. I'd be wary of Thomas as Tom Jack doesn't sound right somehow. Henry is fine but if you use Harry then Harry Jack also doesn't seem right.

Keir Jack sounds fine, Kerr Jack doesn't - it's quite strange. I think one syllable can work if it's the right name.

I like pp suggestion of Evan and Elliot and I think Findlay Jack is also fine but I don't think Theo or Noah work. Nathan is fine too.

Solomon Jack?
Gregor Jack?
Austin Jack?

Luredbyapomegranate · 20/01/2022 21:35

I think anything 2 syllables up is going to sound better, particularly if it starts with a J. Try and avoid things that will end up w single syllable nns.

Theo and Noah both great. I’d avoid Finlay because it will end up Finn. Jude and Jonah - nope. Henry and Thomas are a bit dull with Jack, you need something a bit jazzier.

Elijah nn Eli, Leon, Nathan, Jerome, Angus, Rufus, Lucas, Linus, Struan, Miles, Levi.. slightly drawn out syllables seem to work best.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 21/01/2022 04:05

Alfie Jack
Barnaby Jack
Francis Jack

BDavis · 21/01/2022 04:27

I know a couple of families with the same surname OP 😊
Their boys are Joshua and Daniel 😊

BDavis · 21/01/2022 04:29

@firsttimem What about Elliot? 😊

ItsReallyOnlyMe · 21/01/2022 04:57

Dominic ?

Tortoisesmovefasterthanme · 21/01/2022 06:17

We’ve got a 1 syllable surname and are going for a 1 syllable first name if we have a boy. There’re no rules (think of Kate Moss!) our choice flows well and we have chosen a 2 syllable middle name. Go with what you love ❤️

RavenclawsRoar · 21/01/2022 07:42

I think Jonah Jack sounds great!

MrsBertBibby · 21/01/2022 07:58

I have monosyllabic first and last names, and I hate it. They are both long vowel sounds, I think it would be even worse with short vowels.

I would definitely go for longer names, preferably ones that don't have a default one-syllable nick, so there's a fighting chance he won't end up with that.

Elias
Robert
Conrad
Toby

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 21/01/2022 08:03

I also love Jonah Jack ☺️

Underthestairsbears · 21/01/2022 08:35

Sebastian sounds great with your surname.
Or what about

Benjamin
Christopher
Alexander

Dragonfly2022 · 21/01/2022 09:11

If you're going with a longer name it may be worth considering if it's likely to be shortened - eg Daniel Jack and Benjamin Jack work really well, but if he ends up being known as Dan or Ben, they don't work quite as well.

Evan is brilliant (biased!) and works well with Jack. What about:

Rufus
Rory
Theo
Elliott
Albie
Caleb

Best of luck OP!

emmathedilemma · 21/01/2022 09:41

I think Finley works fine.
Alistair
Alexander
Hamish
Felix
Rowan
Rory / Ruaridh
Struan
Rufus
Marcus
Innes
Andrew

Fire19 · 21/01/2022 09:55

Wilfred
Walter
Felix
Benjamin
Raymond
Douglas
Joseph
Rowan

Jeremy

Brunonono · 21/01/2022 22:23

I liked Cameron that another person mentioned upthread. In general I think one syllable surnames are more tricky and I had this issue. In the end we went for a one syllable first name too and the name we loved and tried not to overthink it.

Buddhabowl · 24/01/2022 21:08

I don't think a one syllable surname necessarily needs a long first name.
I know an adult Tom John and honestly it's never occurred to me that his name is too short. I actually think it's quite memorable and strong.
Tom Cruz, Brad Pitt, James Dean, Kate Moss, all strong memorable sounding names IMO.
I think Jude Jack is a bit hard to say though maybe.
Noah Theo and Finley are all fine.

Buddhabowl · 24/01/2022 21:08

I actually really like Jonah Jack
