Hamish (if only a bit Scottish)

I'm not Scottish at all. DH's dad was Scottish and his mum is French. We have a Scottish surname. We live in England.

I have always loved the name Hamish. DH says he thinks it's "too Scottish" by which he means that you have to be more Scottish than we are use it. Just wondered what others thought? Personally I'd happily use the name even if none of us were Scottish.

Friends husband is named Hamish but is from NZ. From what he tells me it is more popular there than in Scotland. I think he was one of 3 in his year.
He has some Scottish heritage but definitely wouldn’t consider himself “Scottish”.

My son is Scottish, and Hamish. His dad is from NZ. Personally I think you do not need to be Scottish to carry it off, you just need to be amazing and I guarantee your son will be amazing!!!

IT's James in Gaelic?

Call your child what you want. Some names I would consider a bit precious like Padraic as opposed to Patrick or Chaim for a Christian but non Jews use Miriam, Mary, Joseph, Ruth, Sarah.

But you do what you want.

It's a great name.

@crosstalk what is precious about Pádraic? I'm very strongly thinking of using Pádraig

I'm not Scottish at all abs I'd use it. It's a lovely name Smile

Not at all. Lovely name sounds great as a child and adult.

Edenember · 18/01/2022 16:28

I love the name hamish, its my 9 year old name and I couldn't imagine him being anything else but hamish.

We are scottish but don't know any others with the name.

Fl0w3ry · 18/01/2022 16:35

It’s a good name, and no I don’t think you need to be strongly Scottish to use it.

Hamish is much more mainstream than Padraic in the UK, let alone Chaim.

I think a bit of Scottish ancestry helps but you have that and it’s a great name.
