Ancient Greek/Mythology Names

I love Hermione but I really don’t want to use it due to the Harry Potter connotation. I am of the superfan HP peak generation and don’t want be asked ‘ohhh like Granger?’ …however a lovely namesake it is. I also was immediately put off when JK said she decided on Hermione because she believed her parents would want to show off how clever they are with the Greek/Shakespeare name. Grin

Anything similarly melodic and of the same vibe that you could recommend? Can’t use Persephone or Penelope.

My favourite Greek name is Nefeli, the cloud nymph.

I also really like Ariadne, Artemis, Selena and Phaedra.

PraiseBee · 17/01/2022 22:01

Not Greek but Roman, but I like it - Tulia

PersonaNonGarter · 17/01/2022 22:03

Phoebe

Hermia? Like in A Midsummer Night's Dream?
Cordelia?
Portia
Leonine
Miranda
Silvia
Valeria

I also love Calypso.

FlosCampi · 17/01/2022 22:03

Eris is goddess of discord, Cassandra fated always to speak the truth but never believed, Jocasta married her son and killed herself, Antigone product of their incest also killed herself, Clytemnestra....well! Most of these women were raped and/ or turned into something. Are there other mythologies where women fare better? Norse? Celtic?

Aozora13 · 17/01/2022 22:05

I love Artemis, Juno and Ariadne and was also toying with Callisto/Callista for DD3. Or maybe Cassandra, Cordelia or Miranda for something more mainstream but still Hermione-esque.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 17/01/2022 22:05

Doubt it.

Classica · 17/01/2022 22:06

Some beautiful names in Greek mythology but so many pesky incest stories. Myrrha is a lovely name but she shagged her dad and then turned into a tree, so a suboptimal 'let's talk about where our names come from' opportunity there.

Potcallingkettle · 17/01/2022 22:06

Antigone nn Tiggy
Euphemia nn Effie
Iphigenia

SarahWoodruff · 17/01/2022 22:08

DD is Juno, which I (biased, of course) think is both elegant and cute. Some other ideas ..

Diana
Phoebe
Clio
Cressida (not a great character though)
Leda

sherbetmelon · 17/01/2022 22:08

Calliope
Callista

I'm bias as I have a Callie

ImFree2doasiwant · 17/01/2022 22:08

I know an Andromeda.

MarciaDidia · 17/01/2022 22:13

Medusa. Means Protector. Although I accept it has little else going for it.

ScrambledSmegs · 17/01/2022 22:14

Hebe's pretty and as the myths go, one of the less dodgy*. However a lot of people don't know about the cup-bearer bit and just assume garden shrub.

  • AFAIR. I might be very wrong.
TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 17/01/2022 22:20

I like Andromeda, Juno, Hera, but I absolutely adore Minera!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 17/01/2022 22:25

I love Ianthe (usually pronounced ee- an- thee , although you may get eye-an-thee too). Like Hermione it has both Greek mythological (she was a Oceanid) and literary links (used by several poets/writers including Shelley in Queen Mab, who also named his daughter it).

Cotswoldmama · 17/01/2022 22:31

I love Calypso, it always makes me think of the Suzanne Vega song ♥️

JayAlfredPrufrock · 17/01/2022 22:32

Mary Wesley novels for me.

Classica · 17/01/2022 22:32

I loved Calypso in The Camomile Lawn.

SeanChailleach · 17/01/2022 22:33

That's the hardest challenge anyone has ever posed. Not many names have the rhythm of Hermione. Penelope and Persephone you've ruled out. Nothing beginning with El. And on top of all that, you don't want it to sound too Greek.

Mnemosyne
Ourania
Polymnia

I may have failed on the "not too Greek" point.

I never said anything about it sounding too Greek!

@Travelbug7

This is btringing me back to my Xena Warrior Princess days! Any other fans on this thread?
Me!!! Absolutely besotted in childhood- I now have a diploma in Greek mythology due to my obsession 😂
Marcipex · 17/01/2022 23:00

I love Atalanta and Callista. Lanta or Callie are nice shortenings.
Andromeda is quite nice but I always visualise a camel.

I had a great-aunt Clytemnestra.

DaisyWaldron · 17/01/2022 23:07

I like Boccaccio's On Famous Women as a good source of girls' names. DD has one of the less usual ones, but there are plenty to choose from, each with an interesting story.
