Colin or Neil?

Which name do you prefer? Old fashioned I know, but that’s the style we like. Opinions on these names?

OP posts:

Love both of them. Colin is the Scottish short version of Nicholas. I knew two growing up - one my own age (born 1976) and one the Dad of a friend. One pronounced if Co-lin with the o as in cot and the other as Coe-lin with the o as in boat.
Also knew a few Neil's my own age.
But then 3 of my boys have names int he same sort of time era so I would love them 🤣

I hope your surname is not Cone... Wink

Colin or Neil?
Santahasjoinedww · 16/01/2022 18:09

They are both bloody awful for any baby born in 2022. Or in any year post Old Days.
Please don't..

MintMatchmaker · 16/01/2022 18:10

Both absolutely dreadful but Neil if I had to choose one.

Neil is very 70s but I would have had Colin as more popular in the 40s.

Whenever they’re from though I think they’re best left there!

MajorCarolDanvers · 16/01/2022 18:11

Not uncommon names in my part of Scotland

I prefer Colin

MondayYogurt · 16/01/2022 18:11

Colin with Cole as nn

LizBennet · 16/01/2022 18:12

Colin if I was forced.

TheDuchessOfMN · 16/01/2022 18:12

I quite like Colin

campion · 16/01/2022 18:16

Colin is nice if it's a cake. The mini ones especially.
Otherwise you need to be about 70 or so.
Neil is 'the baby', obviously.

Both very last century - and not in a good way.

1forAll74 · 16/01/2022 18:17

I think you should choose either of those names, as you obviously like them.. Other peoples views don't matter at all. It's quite ridiculous that some people have a problem with so called old fashioned names, that were more in vogue years ago, this does not matter at all. I have always liked older types of names, as opposed to some odd ball name choices, often mentioned on here.

sixtiesbaby88 · 16/01/2022 18:25

I think Colin is ready for a comeback and you'll be ahead of the game!

OnaBegonia · 16/01/2022 18:38

I know quite a few dogs called Colin.
Surely you have other ideas.
Aww wee baby Colin 🙄

DefyingSanity · 16/01/2022 19:09

Surely there's only one correct answer here? Baby Neil.

Colin or Neil?
Joolsin · 16/01/2022 19:24

I massively dislike both names, Neil is fractionally worse. Both beige/bland. And Niall is exactly the same as Neil imo.

Kitkat151 · 16/01/2022 19:31

Both really horrible names...fine if you want an older vibe...but definately not these🙄

Somanysocks · 16/01/2022 19:31

Ah Colin was my first boyfriend in the early 80's. Neil was a horrible neighbours spoilt kid. So Colin for me I think.

WorriedGiraffe · 16/01/2022 19:34

If I met a baby Colin I’d think you were a bit strange for naming your kid after a caterpillar cake. I don’t like either for a baby, it’s not even traditional it’s just dated. Colin maybe marginally better, I do love the cake though so maybe I’m biased.

GreenLunchBox · 16/01/2022 19:34

Both awful, but if pushed Colin pronounced the way Colin Powell pronounced his

MyQuietPlace · 16/01/2022 19:36

Neither, although Colin is the worst of the 2

Jelly4444 · 16/01/2022 19:38

How about Colm? It's a little nicer than Colin I think.

ShowOfHands · 16/01/2022 19:38

@DefyingSanity

Surely there's only one correct answer here? Baby Neil.
Neil The Baby surely.
celestebellman · 16/01/2022 19:38

One of my favourite, and also very cool, people is called Neil - most of his school friends are also called Neil.... guess there was a time it was pretty popular :)

I still think Neil is a good name though - short and to the point like many current popular boys' names. So I would go for that, will make a refreshing change and I don't think would be a target for bullies at all.

I don't mind Colin either, but prefer Neil. Or Niall.

DisforDarkChocolate · 16/01/2022 19:40

Neil, the baby. Only at a push.

Colin is a caterpillar.

SwedishEdith · 16/01/2022 19:43

Both awful but Neil if you have to have one.

drigon · 16/01/2022 19:43

Gun to my head, Colin. It reminds me of lovely Colin from It's a Sin, but not a favourite at all. Col is nice, though.
