What do you think?

It's the only name we can both agree on. I love it. The surname is quite difficult so we wanted something simple for the first name

What are your first impressions?

elelel · 12/01/2022 01:36

I think it's dated and I associate it with trouble makers. No idea why, I just do!

MrsTerryPratchett · 12/01/2022 01:39

I like it.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 12/01/2022 01:47

I really like it

TheFoz · 12/01/2022 01:53

You know it’s Irish? As in the Irish language? It translates as William.

Luckingfovely · 12/01/2022 02:00

I can only think Gallagher, but if I can clear that from my mind, then I like it.

coffeewithmilk · 12/01/2022 02:08

@TheFoz yeah - I'm Irish! Wanted an Irish name as my surname is not Irish

It's a very big Yes from me, I love it.

imnotacelebritygetmeoutofhere · 12/01/2022 02:14

I love it, it's cute and elegant at the same time, and I would say fairly timeless so it doesn't date. My nephew is a Liam, short for William.

HNY2022mam · 12/01/2022 03:12

Thumbs up from me.

KloppsTeeth · 12/01/2022 03:32

It’s a great name.

DotDotDotDotDot · 12/01/2022 05:28

Liam is classic, dependable, I say go for it.

resm · 12/01/2022 08:22

Love it.

Georgeskitchen · 12/01/2022 08:31

Yes definitely a good strong name, go for it

toastofthetown · 12/01/2022 08:33

It’s fine. Not the most exciting name, but not a bad one.

Subulter · 12/01/2022 08:37

I have no strong feelings about it either way it feels a bit 'dated classic' to me (in Ireland), but maybe due a revival? but if you're in the UK, be aware that, based on responses on here, it seems to be associated with the downmarket and troublemaking. Make of that what you will.

CalonGaled · 12/01/2022 09:23

This a little bit but it is a nice name, and less popular than it was.

Have you considered Niall?

CalonGaled · 12/01/2022 09:27

@Subulter, the downmarket/troublemaker bit is IMO to do with names being used because the names are trendy, and there being no, or only a tenuous, connection with the language or culture.

Spidey66 · 12/01/2022 09:28

I love it. I think it's pretty timeless, I can imagine both a baby and an old man with it.

GingerBeverage · 12/01/2022 09:34

There's an article about it here: amp.theguardian.com/world/2020/oct/23/liam-goes-supersonic-rises-up-baby-name-charts-around-world

MadisonAvenue · 12/01/2022 09:46

I love it, we’d have used it for our youngest (now 21) and it went well with our Irish surname. There was a Liam living next door though who never missed a chance to hurt or upset our then 3 year old son and it put us off using it.

LowlyTheWorm · 12/01/2022 09:48

It was more popular in the 90s 00s but it’s a lovely name and more baby liams are a great idea!

Subulter · 12/01/2022 09:50

Liam was absolutely never trendy, though! And I’d be quite surprised if someone without Irish heritage of some form used it — i don’t see it as one of those names like Kevin that have jumped free of their heritage.

DoucheCanoe · 12/01/2022 09:51

I loved it when I named my DS 16 years ago and still love it now 🙂

He was 1 of 3 in his class at primary as there seemed to be a sudden peak in our area that year but it's never bothered him/us and it seems to have died down again so probably not as popular now.

I have seen/heard that it's a "naughty boy" or "down-market" name (mostly on here) but I don't really pay people with prejudice like that much notice - its generally Irish names that are trotted out with this label and I think it shows a lot of ignorance. Don't let that bother you!

We are Scottish, I personally don't bother too much about name origin/meanings BUT my Great-Great Grandparents were Irish immigrants so maybe I can get away with it :o

musicalfrog · 12/01/2022 09:51

Oh I love it! It was very much on our list.

Justcantdeal · 12/01/2022 09:53

I'm Irish, I think it's boring and too popular.
