Luna V Una

Which do you prefer and why?
On my previous thread most people said that Luna is too popular for pets to saddle a little girl with so how about Una? Does it look incomplete?
Thanks!

Una. Prefer the Oona spelling.

kitcat15 · 10/01/2022 21:34

Luna is a dogs name

Yika · 10/01/2022 21:40

How else can Una be pronounced than like Luna without the L?

I like both but slightly prefer Una.

PuppyMonkey · 10/01/2022 21:49

I think PP means that lot of people in England think Una is pronounced Yoona because that’s how the late Una Stubbs (wrongly) pronounced it.

Changethetoner · 10/01/2022 22:32

Oona or Orla.

sorry but I dislike Luna for a human. Certainly cannot imagine her as an adult.

Luredbyapomegranate · 11/01/2022 23:09

Prefer the Oona spelling but yes, great

Luna has had its day

Yes to this, on both counts. I think Luna is past its peak and will date quickly now.

I really like Luna. I don't like Una because to me it sounds phlegm-y.

user1493494961 · 11/01/2022 23:40

Both awful.

Greenmarmalade · 11/01/2022 23:42

Una

Fl0w3ry · 11/01/2022 23:56

To me Luna is a cats name. I like Una more I think.

elelel · 11/01/2022 23:57

@Yika

You - nah

I am in Scotland and I know of 2 who pronounce this way.

Mybumlooksbig · 12/01/2022 00:32

Una...beautiful name xx

Faretheewellmyfairyfay · 12/01/2022 00:45

I prefer Luna to Una (either pronunciation). It just sounds nicer to my ears.

Also, Luna makes me think of the character in Harry Potter, who I found appealingly written and acted. Una makes me thing of Una Stubbs, who acted Aunt Sally in the original Worzle Gummidge, among other things, and although I am sure she was a good actress and nice woman, she didn't appeal to me much.

Una has two pronunciations so this might cause your child some minor issues too.

Depends on the surname and the initials together and how they flow and how they look as initials. Eg Una Martin ("Um..."), Luna Olivia Owen ("loo") etc. not good. If your surname starts with A, not great. You get the idea.

Faretheewellmyfairyfay · 12/01/2022 00:48

Una Stubbs (wrongly) pronounced it

It was her name so she was at liberty to pronounce it how she liked! (And/or how her parents pronounced it when she was named. By them.)

OTOH, it's not uncommon for celebrities to go along with the public mispronouncing their names, even when they/their friend and families pronounce it the original/correct way.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 12/01/2022 01:01

Luna is a cat’s name.

foxgoosefinch · 12/01/2022 01:15

Una makes me think of Aunt Sally too, sadly - and to me it’s quite a dated and frumpy Edwardian name. Spelt Oona/Oonagh it makes me think of my Irish great-aunties - again v dated.

I like Luna much better - I’ve not encountered any pets called Luna, but DD has a little 6 y o friend at school called Luna who is cute and charming, so I associate it with her! Even with the Harry Potter reference, it’s more fresh and modern (and pretty) than Una.

What about Lara or Lyra?

LizzieAnt · 12/01/2022 14:38

Don't forget the fada Smile It's actually Úna.
(Or maybe Ùna in Scottish Gaelic.) I know lots of people leave it out though.

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 12/01/2022 14:41

What about Lula instead?

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 12/01/2022 14:42

Una makes me think... "una, dos, tres....

Luna is a bit meh.

Sorry.

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 12/01/2022 14:42

Or Mila?

Legoninjago1 · 12/01/2022 14:48

I know no fewer than 5 dogs called Luna! Ruined it for me. Loved it before. I like Lulu which could be short for Lucy, Louise, Laila etc

TedsaidFred · 12/01/2022 19:47

@SummaLuvin

I prefer Luna, I like the 'l' sound at the start. I also quite like Una, and I don't think it looks incomplete.

As a side note, this forum are currently obsessed with saying names are animal names, which I personally find excessive - unless you are naming your child Spot or Woof then I wouldn't worry if you like the name. I know dogs called Miriam, Millie, Ruby, Max, and Robert, human names are a popular dog name trend right now.

I agree with this regarding the labelling of names being for pets, i was thinking about it when I saw your previous thread. My MIL has dogs called Chloe and Leila. Our dogs names are also transferable to humans and rank in the top 200 for boys and girls. I know a human Roscoe and Bruno is very popular in some cultures, I'm aware of 3 from Portugal. As for Luna, I know 2 human ones and no pet ones. I really don't think you should let the 'it's a pets name' comments sway you from a name you love which is clearly used for humans. Fwiw I would prefer to be called Luna than Una, I think it is prettier.
Level75 · 12/01/2022 19:54

I know 4 dogs called Luna and I really don't know that many dogs in total! it's a very very popular pet name at the moment. It's lovely but that would put me off.

Didiplanthis · 12/01/2022 20:07

Meh.. to pets names.

My alpaca is called Brian and my guinea pig is John.
