Ivy was on the list as one of my top baby girl names. I picked out Margaret for the middle name, baby girl is due this week. Any thoughts on what you think of this name?

Sounds very old fashioned to me. How about Evie Margaret Pritchard?

tiredanddangerous · 09/01/2022 21:15

I like Ivy but really dislike Margaret.

irismummy1 · 09/01/2022 21:18

I've name changed for this thread for obvious reasons.

My daughter is Iris Joyce (Joyce is her middle name and is a family name), so a very similar vibe. It's 'old ladyish' but she absolutely rocks it and we've had nothing but compliments. Nobody asks what her middle name is anyway.

Ivy is lovely, go for it!

Moonlaserbearwolf · 09/01/2022 21:18

I love Margaret (and the plethora of possible nicknames), but not a fan of Ivy.
Might be a bit much as others have said, but nothing wrong with them if you like them. I would swap them and go for Margaret Ivy.

WhatIsThisPlease · 09/01/2022 21:20

My middle name is/was Margaret. I removed it by deed poll as I didn't want it read out in church when I got married.

Hated it then, still so. Old lady name. Sorry.

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 09/01/2022 21:22

I like it but would personally choose a slightly "softer" sounding first name, e.g. Eleanor Margaret Pritchard.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 09/01/2022 21:22

Ivy Pritchard does the flowers for the local church and solves murders on the side. Loves to undone her girdle at the end of the day and sit in front of the fire with a wee brandy.

pollyannaparrott · 09/01/2022 21:24

Love it. It's old fashioned but in a cool, classy way. Margaret (nn Maggie) is gorgeous imo.

ozymandiusking · 09/01/2022 21:25

I.M.P. Sorry sounds very old.

rambleonplease · 09/01/2022 22:37

I don't like it all together tbh. Ivy is quite nice. But not Margaret, I just think of Thatcher! But I am really not a fan of old fashioned names.

Luckingfovely · 09/01/2022 22:43

Very old fashioned. Are you naming an 80 year old?

Redshoeblueshoe · 09/01/2022 22:43

I think it's lovely.

Daisy829 · 09/01/2022 22:46

I love it. Think it’s a really strong name. Congrats on the imminent new arrival

Bortles · 09/01/2022 22:54

Maybe Maggie instead of the full Margaret or Greta?

manseymoo1987 · 09/01/2022 22:59

I like ivy but could you change the middle name to Margot (like Margot Robbie)- I love that name. Even Maggie is better than Margaret

Itchylegs · 09/01/2022 23:00

I like it. Ivy is really sweet. Could be Ivy Peg ...

PattyPan · 09/01/2022 23:00

Lovely choice! Margaret is so underused nowadays.

DPotter · 09/01/2022 23:12

The name sounds like one from A Miss Marple book. Now don't get me wrong I love Agatha Christie books , just wouldn't name my daughter after a character in one of them.

Margaret has potential and lovely nicknames, but Ivy not so much

Undertheoldlindentree · 09/01/2022 23:13

Imp isn't really a great combo of initials. Handy if she's in the Imp six at Brownies. Not so great if you live in Lincoln....

SaltedCaramelIcedLatte · 09/01/2022 23:13

Awful

JacquelineCarlyle · 09/01/2022 23:15

I think it's lovely!

canary1 · 09/01/2022 23:18

A character in Agatha Christie novel?

HollowTalk · 09/01/2022 23:19

Really awful. It sounds like an 85-year-old who is very prim and proper.

Kitkat151 · 09/01/2022 23:25

Ivy is fine....I don’t like Margaret

toastofthetown · 09/01/2022 23:27

Sounds fine to me, if a bit dull. Ivy is the 6th most popular name in England and Wales at the moment, and it blends in with other popular names like Evie, Ava, Isla so a bit uninspiring but not a bad name. I like Margaret.

I don’t know why so many posters think it sounds too old. It’s one of the most popular names in the country. Sometimes Mumsnet can be a bit behind on name trends though.
