Too close to Judas? My husband seems to think so, but I love the name. Opinions please?

I taught a Jude and he was so lovey - think it’s a great name.

Spidey66 · 07/01/2022 10:44

I like the name Jude. Judas didn't even occur to me. I think of Hey Jude and Jude Law, that's all.

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 07/01/2022 10:48

Its cute.

ISmellBurnings · 07/01/2022 11:40

Love it, I know 2.

onetwothreeadventure · 07/01/2022 11:45

Love it.

SummaLuvin · 07/01/2022 12:38

It's a pretty popular name, and has been for decades now, so clearly the similarity to Judas is not a problem for many. However, it is undeniable that they are sonically very similar, and I can understand why it might put someone off. We all value things differently when it comes to naming children - for example I don't care about name meanings at all, but for others a good meaning is paramount, there is no right and wrong. Like this, it's clearly an issue for your DH, and just because I feel differently it doesn't invalidate his opinion.

Whatayear81 · 07/01/2022 12:39

Bloody love it

ShowOfHands · 07/01/2022 12:44

A few years ago, it was the fastest climbing name. I know a few. Mostly boys but a couple of girls too.

Interestingly, three of the ones I know also have a brother called Reuben so there may be a law somewhere about having to use both names if you have multiple children. See also, Holly and Poppy. I know 4 sets of siblings called this. All unrelated to each other.

Anyway, it's a great name and I think unlikely to be linked with Judas.

indiesearcher · 07/01/2022 12:45

It's DD's middle name. Shortened from Judith (my mums name but she always preferred Jude).

Love it.

emmathedilemma · 07/01/2022 13:03

I really don't like it but if you do, that's fine. It definitely doesn't make me think of Judas.

SallyWD · 07/01/2022 14:06

I love it. It's an old name but manages to sound modern and cool at the same time!

PlainJane1000 · 07/01/2022 14:08

Definitely think Hey Jude rather than Judas. I know of one boy about 6yo, I think it's a great name.

resm · 08/01/2022 02:50

I have a 2 year old Jude and people have always sang the Beatles song at him since he was born, but no mention of the Judas association. I think it’s a popular enough name in it owns right to avoid that connection.

nocoolnamesleft · 08/01/2022 02:56

Wouldn't think Judas. First association is Hey Jude, second is St Jude, patron saint of hopeless causes.

Lion1618 · 08/01/2022 10:40

I really like Jude. It's gaining in popularity if that's something which you consider? I teach a Jude (Year 1) and know a few 3 year old Jude's. Still a great name though in my opinion!

Cbeebiesrehab · 08/01/2022 11:22

I have a Jude and receive nothing but compliments. I still adore his name.

Blubells · 08/01/2022 12:41

It is the German word for Jew. Pronounced Yoo-deh.

So it's not a name that travels terribly well.

PlanetNormal · 08/01/2022 12:52

Jude is going to become very popular because of an 18 year old footballer called Jude Bellingham. He currently plays for Borussia Dortmund in Germany, but it’s only a matter of time until he moves to one of the biggest PL clubs. He’s one of the best young midfielders in the world and a likely future England captain.

Words · 08/01/2022 16:29

I guess it depends on your frame of reference.

It would never be my choice because: Jude the Obscure, ( Hardy's very bleak novel where the eponymous protagonist kills himself ) St Jude, patron saint of lost causes, yes, the Judas thing, and in German it means Jew, of course that's fine, but it was painted across shop fronts by the Nazis, and brings to mind footage of the defaced shopfronts and Kristellnacht.

I also dislike the sound of it. But loads of people disagree as it's extremely popular!

Riverlee · 08/01/2022 18:34

Love it. Wouldn’t think of Judas at all.

ofwarren · 08/01/2022 18:36

Makes me think of Jude Law, not Judas.
Nice name.

LovelyBranches · 08/01/2022 18:36

I know a Jude and as a toddler be used to called himself dude, which was very cute

Luredbyapomegranate · 08/01/2022 19:18

It’s nice. He’s a later saint, not the bloke from the bible.

There is also Joel if you can’t persuade your husband.

Roselilly36 · 08/01/2022 19:31

It’s quite popular, probably because of Jude Law. The saint connection would put me off tbh.

Cbeebiesrehab · 08/01/2022 19:50

I never understand why people are put off by the Saint? He’s the saint that people turn to when they feel all hope is lost, the Saint that they ask for help and inner strength. People pray to Saint Jude in times when they feel their cause is impossible and they trust that his prayer will help them. I actually think that’s a nice thing.

I do get the German thing however. It didn’t put me off but I can understand why it might.
