Thoughts on the boys name Isacco?

Hello,
Just looking for opinions & thoughts on the name Isacco for a boy? Just to give you a bit of background info - My partner is Italian, he moved to the UK 6 years ago. I’m originally from the UK. We are currently living here in Britain, so would the name Isacco work over here? My Partner really wants to use an Italian name for our baby. As much as I love Italian names, my favourite boys name is Isaac and I really want to use this name for our baby. Isacco is the Italian variation. Thoughts on using Isacco? Thank you 😊

I don’t see why not! My worry would be though that people would pronounce it like Isaac with an o on the end meaning neither you nor your husband get quite what you want. If the compromise works then fine but not if neither of you is quite happy.

I’m half Italian and there are many names I would choose if I could live with the mispronunciations but I just can’t!

Sounds a bit like a petrol station to me, sorry

Just jumping in to say that's exactly how I read it when I saw the thread title. I'm sure i'd learn the correct pronunciation once explained, but having never come across the name before I defaulted to Isacc-O

@stairgates

Sounds a bit like a petrol station to me, sorry
That was my first thought too.
thickthighs73 · 02/01/2022 14:36

I think it’s rather nice, but I’m bias as I do love the name Issac.

CrispAndFrosty · 02/01/2022 14:37

It makes me think "A sack of..." - sorry! And it will be mispronounced a lot.

SirChenjins · 02/01/2022 14:39

How is it pronounced?

If you want Isaac then the compromise could be your choice of first name to reflect your culture, his surname to reflect his.

Gigi97 · 02/01/2022 14:45

The “I” is meant to be pronounced like “E”. So it would be E-Sac-Co. if that’s makes sense? Thank you for the suggestion, but I just don’t think he’ll budge on it not being Italian unfortunately.

I absolutely love the name Isaac always have done. If hubby won’t budge on it not being Italian I’m might use it as a middle name, as I’m not completely sold on Isacco, which is why I wanted others thoughts on it.

Reminds me of Prosecco

SnowyPetals · 02/01/2022 14:58

Isaaco just seems like neither of you are getting what you want. There are much nicer Italian names, and Isaaco is not really Isaac as it is pronounced so differently. Could you give him an Italian first name, Isaac as middle name and use Isaac day to day?

PinkWaferBiscuit · 02/01/2022 14:59

Something else to consider but because Isaac is such a common name I'd honestly presume if I saw the name Isaaco written down that it was Isaac O, the O being the first letter of his surname.

Ohyesiam · 02/01/2022 15:03

Sounds really lovely. People cope with non-phonetic names. My Dds best F is called Niamh and People May miss spell it, but once they are introduced they usually wrap their heads round it. I realise it is a widely used name than Isacco, but it wasn’t so much 15 years ago when they were both in reception.

Gigi97 · 02/01/2022 15:07

Thank you all for the positive & negative comments. I really appreciate it as I’m weighing up the pros & cons to the name. I’ll have to discuss it with the husband. I’m leaning towards using the English Variation “Isaac” as a middle name at the moment 😌

Is there a reason your husband gets the final say on him having an Italian name?

Clarice99 · 02/01/2022 15:12

@Schmoozer

Reminds me of Prosecco
Exactly what I thought Grin
Gigi97 · 02/01/2022 15:13

He’s from southern Italy, where they have strict traditions. Normally, our son would have to named after my husbands father in line with tradition, which is Giuseppe. I’m not a big fan of this name, so trying to convince him that we aren’t calling our son Giuseppe was a big task lol 😂 but we finally came to the compromise that as long as the first name was Italian he would be fine with it

If the child is growing up/going to school in UK, why not call him Isaac when in UK.

DP and the Italian family members can still call him Isacco at home.

It's not a made up name it's a name from another culture. Try not to be so ignorant.

And what about the British tradition of the name being something both parents get a say in?
Concestor · 02/01/2022 15:17

I read it correctly, but I think many wouldn't. I don't hate it but then I like Giuseppe. Maybe find a different Italian name? There are lots of lovely ones

Gigi97 · 02/01/2022 15:19

We are both getting a say. I won’t choose a first name that we both hate, hence why I told him I don’t like Giuseppe. Which he has compromised on. I just thought since I like Isaac why not use the Italian variation & we both get what we want. But I’m not sold on the variation completely, which is why I was looking for opinions?

You need to name your son something you both love, I'd start again with this in mind.

RedRobyn2021 · 02/01/2022 15:26

I'm sorry, I personally don't like it. I think Isaac is really nice though.

Although it really doesn't matter what I think, if you and your partner like the name go for it

rifling · 02/01/2022 15:28

I've lived in Italy for over 20 years and never met an Isacco! Generally, Italians don't choose old testament/Hebrew names unless they are Jewish. There are a few names that "cross over" e.g. Samuele, Daniele, Davide but most old testament names aren't commonly used unless also in the new testament e.g. Sara.
