What’s your thoughts on this name for a boy?

I’m liking it more & more recently

@dinahsdishes

Joey was a very offensive insult when I was at school
Same but I don't actually remember what it meant 🙈
Twinkleylight · 04/01/2022 00:19

@OnceUponAMidnightBeery

“There will never be a President Joey”
Ahh but he's Joe Biden not Joey and Joe is perfectly acceptable nn. Although in Britain. I still think you couldn't get away with a Prime minister Joey, Joe maybe but not Joey.... just yet.
greenteafiend · 04/01/2022 07:57

I think Joe is OK on the birth certificate, but not Joey. If you don't like Joseph, I'd go for Joe and just use Joey as a nickname.

lozengeoflove · 04/01/2022 07:59

“Doesn’t share food”.

Can’t get past that line.

Feelingoktoday · 04/01/2022 08:01

Call him Joseph. He will soon be called Joey by his friends so you will get your wish. However when he is older, teachers will ask him what he wants to be called and he will say Joseph or Joe. He will not choose Joey so don’t saddle him with that name - let him choose.

GoodnightGrandma · 04/01/2022 08:01

No, there was a programme about a man in a home for people with special needs many years ago. He was called Joey Deacon, and people weren’t very nice about it at the time.

Ceramide · 04/01/2022 08:18

I'd definitely go for Joseph as full name, and you could use Joe or Joey as nickname. Joel, Jonah or Josiah could work as full name too.

I remember Joey Deacon too, and his name unfortunately being used as an insult, but children of this generation won't make this association at all.

I came across this thread by accident and it has really ruined my day and made me feel sad and ashamed to be British (again)! I read Tongue Tied by Joey Deacon back in the 70s and it started me on a lifelong career (I was already a speech therapist) of working on augmentative communication technology for people with cerebral palsy, like Joey. I never knew, at the time, that people used his name an insult. How disgusting! Hopefully Joey and his friends never knew it either. I wish I could go back in time .and tell him - and all the other people who were cruel enough to use that term- that a person with cerebral palsy who uses a communication aid, won ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ in 2018 and is a successful stand up comedian. Probably achieved much more than anyone who used that insult ever made of their life!

I've never heard the insult but maybe it was before my time. I think Joey is fine as a nickname but putting Joseph on the birth certificate gives him the option of using a more classic/mature name when he's older.

CouncilHousedAndViolentBaby · 03/04/2022 15:37

I don't like it because it's too well known as an ableist slur

CurlyBurley · 03/04/2022 15:48

I think Joey is a great name. As others have mentioned there was an amazing man called Joey Deacon who did a great amount to raise awareness of cerebral palsy and the problems faced by people with the condition. If I had had a boy I was going to call him Joseph.

Spidey66 · 03/04/2022 15:50

@Words

Joey is a fine name for a budgerigar.
My thoughts exactly! It’s cute as a nickname or pet name but not as a stand-alone name. Joseph is a great name though.
SexiestDogWalker · 03/04/2022 15:58

I have a Joey. He's Joseph on his birth certificate and when I really need his attention. But he's known as Joey in school and by everyone

GeneLovesJezebel · 03/04/2022 15:59

Joey Deacon.

I've literally never heard it
cptartapp · 03/04/2022 16:04

I remember Joey Deacon. There will always be people that remember how that name was banded about.
So no.

AlwaysLatte · 03/04/2022 16:16

I think it's a nice name but personally prefer Joe.

AlwaysLatte · 03/04/2022 16:17

Joey is a fine name for a budgerigar.
Thankfully these days almost no one has a budgie. No one would make that connection these days.

LadyCatStark · 03/04/2022 16:20

Love it, it was our second choice for DS.

AlwaysLatte · 03/04/2022 16:21

@scotvic
😢 well said

Viviennemary · 03/04/2022 16:24

Awful. It's a name for a budgie not a child.

WeasilyPleased · 03/04/2022 23:10

We have a Joseph in the family. He is 40 now. He's usually called Joe these days but was called Joey as a toddler.
Joseph is such a great guy!
