Boys’ names- we’re stuck, please help!

I feel like I have read every list of names for boys and we just can’t find a name we truly love. There are loads of names out there that are ok, and when I hear it on someone else I think ‘ah that’s nice,’ but I just don’t want to use it. I feel like we’re looking for something unusual, but not too out there, it doesn’t have to be unique, I just feel like I’ve read all the usual lists and still can’t find the one. We had some really good girls’ names, but nope, it’s definitely a boy!

Currently the only name we have is Ferdinand. I love, love, love Ferdi, but I’m not sure I love Ferdinand (see below re no surnames). We’d mostly use Ferdi day to day, but don’t want to give a shortened version on the birth certificate. So we would go with Ferdinand, but wonder if there’s something better we haven’t yet thought of. If it helps, here’s an idea of what we’re not keen on (aggh the list is long):

Anything too traditional ie James, Edward, John etc
Nothing too out there i.e Aloysius, Cosmo, Ulysses
Nothing too trendy now - Roman, Arlo, Kit, Otto
No surnames- Harrison, Spencer, etc
Nothing too American- Brody, Logan
Nothing too biblical- Ezra, Isaac, Reuben
Nothing too old man- Lionel, Percy, Leonard
Nothing too 80s- Steve, Gary, Barry, Kevin

Sorry nothing against any of these names, they’re all solid names, I’m just using them as a reference as we just don’t love them. I feel like I’m asking the impossible, but is there a gem of a name that doesn’t appear regularly on these threads (which I read a lot) and we may have overlooked? (Sorry this is long, thanks for getting this far! )

Do you like Zephan?

Short for Zephaniah which is biblical but Zephan as the full name with Zeph for a nn would work?

RussianSpy101 · 01/01/2022 17:18

Ferdinand is a character in the Tempest - if you're looking for unusual but not too weird, might be worth googling for a list of characters in Shakespeare plays and seeing if similar ones appeal? Off the top of my head: Sebastian, Lawrence, Angelo, Duncan, Fleance, Troilus, Bertram, Benedick, Claudius, Orlando, Jacques....

I do like Ferdinand, but what about Frederick? Similar and can be shortened, or Wilfred, might be a bit old man for your taste though ?

Tristan

Thanks everyone there are some good names here, but nothing we like more than Ferdi/ Ferdinand so perhaps that’s our answer! It’s good to know some of you have met others, and liked them, that’s always nice to hear, and thanks for the positive comments on the name. We don’t want to canvass opinion with friends and family as we don’t want to hear strong views against it! But it’s good to know we’re not alone in liking it! I’m sure it’ll be a marmite one, but that’s the case with many names I think! I’ll definitely update when he’s born, we’re only nearly halfway now so still some thinking time yet! But I’m the meantime if any others come to mind then please do say!

And yes to the Scot/American names, they weren’t good examples, I was having a brain fade as to American style names we’ve heard and discounted!

Thanks everyone!

I think with your list of requirements and your clear love of "Ferdinand" you've been lucky and found your name! Once you see baby you'll know if it works or not x

Thanks again everyone for responding. Just thought I’d update for anyone interested as he’s here now. We went for Ferdinand/ Ferdie in the end and I love it. I actually find myself calling him Ferdinand a lot too! Lots of nice comments from friends and family too. Thanks again for your thoughts and reassurance
