Tadhg or Tate

Buddhabowl · 22/12/2021 22:05

Half Irish boy growing up in the UK. Siblings have Irish names but easier to pronounce.
I love the short snappy sound of Tadhg and the nickname Tiger for a little one. I then discovered Tate which we also like but is quite different in style, but might be easier to live with in the UK. It was actually my eldest son's suggestion!
Thoughts please!

Tate, nn Tayto? Wink

Enko · 23/12/2021 09:07

Really love Tate as a name. Taghd is nice but for me Tate is great

Bagadverts · 23/12/2021 09:11

Either are fine. Tadhg is easy to pronounce once you know.I just looked it up.

I have a foreign name and do get a bit bored spelling and correcting. I know that even local names do have issues though.

Excellent. Grin

I quite like Tayto Blush

@Bagadverts, me too.

Anyone reading my name who hasn't come across it before will say it wrong. It gets misspelt a lot. It's a PITA. Love the name but not the hassle

Haus1234 · 23/12/2021 09:37

I know a young Tadhg in England and everyone pronounces his name fine once it’s been explained once! I think it’s very cute also.

Bagadverts · 23/12/2021 09:51

My boredom on name correction isn’t friends but everything else- companies, work etc. often can’t be bothered- eg use a different name at Starbucks

DuchessOfSausage · 23/12/2021 09:56

@Bagadverts, me too. I don't go to Starbucks, but if someone doesn't actually need to know my real name, I just use a simple short one

With my real name, the different spellings are quite amazing.

I'd expect people to spell Tadhg as Tadgh or something and try to say it as Taig or Tadge

Buddhabowl · 23/12/2021 10:33

@Bagadverts and @duchessofsausage

Do the annoyances make you wish you had a different name or are you still proud of your name?
I'd like to think a Tadhg could just say Tye if necessary in Starbucks or somewhere like that, and it would be a small annoyance to have quite a cool and strong name. But I have an easy name so I don't really know.

DuchessOfSausage · 23/12/2021 10:47

I like my name and I'm proud of my heritage, but my name isn't really usable in day-to-day life so I'm called something else, not of my own choosing but it stuck. My family uses the full version

Even that gets misspelt and mispronounced, which is probably more annoying as there's no excuse

It's something like I'm Malgorzata shortened to Mal but get called Mel or Malc.

I have a Naoise born in the UK. He would find the idea that he would have preferred a Starbucks-friendly name hilarious. He sometimes got ‘Nisha’ in Starbucks.

I also have an unusual Irish name and spent over 20 years in England — was never an issue, unless you’re the type to cry if a dental receptionist gets your name wrong.

DuchessOfSausage · 23/12/2021 11:08

@Orreries, I wouldn't burst into tears if a dental receptionist got my name wrong but if they were calling out Margaret Winneker or some other 'version' I'd probably not realise it was me

Prescriptions often get misspelt and the pharmacist won't issue them

As I said, a PITA

I think you e been very unlucky with the prescriptions, @DuchessOfSausage — that has literally never happened to me once at various GP surgeries, through pregnancy and antenatal care and several surgeries, over 20 years, and my name is along the lines of Caoilfhionn Ní Cheallaigh. (But not that, obviously.)

FrDamo · 23/12/2021 11:33

Tadhg and Cillian are my boys names of choice. I got veteod ("we are not having anything you can't spell") and wish I had stuck to my guns. My lads have perfectly nice standard everyday names but nothing that really reflects their heritage. My bad.

Stick to your guns.

SundayTeatime · 23/12/2021 11:42

Tadhg definitely.
Not Tate. I think of sugar and slavery.

2Gen · 23/12/2021 11:44

I much prefer Tadgh, but he's your child, your decision. The only thing is if you come here to Ireland, he may well be dubbed "Tayto" if you call him Tate. I always think of Taytos ( a brand of crisps in Ireland) whenever I hear the name Tate and I must confess, I don't like it at all.
He is your son though, and so it's up to yourself and your husband.

2Gen · 23/12/2021 11:48

@Buddhabowl

I quite like Tayto Blush
But surely it's eating them you like, not being called Tayto?
Adventsquirrel · 23/12/2021 11:50

I love Tadhg, it's a gorgeous name.

DuchessOfSausage · 23/12/2021 12:00

Not my real name either @Orreries, but I do get annoyed when they get it wrong because they cann't be arsed to read it properly or have the cheek to tell me I'm wrong.

I was once told by a rude pharmacist there was no need for me to spell out my my name as my prescription wasn't there.

With the name you gave, I'd probably just say I had no idea how to say it. If I googled it I'd probably still get it wrong. If I had a stab at it maybe Kailian O'Kelly???

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 23/12/2021 12:48

My vote was already for Tadhg but especially now you have said that you already have a Cillian. Cillian and Tadhg make a great sibset. Cillian and Tate are two VERY different styles of name.

SlowBoiledFrog · 23/12/2021 12:55

I have a Naoise

How is that pronounced?

Tadhg, just to check like TyeG, hard or soft g?

Orreries · 23/12/2021 13:25

KWALE-in Oh KYALL-ig. Very roughly.

@SlowBoiledFrog, Naoise is NEESH-uh. ‘Aoi’ is the same vowel sound as in Aoife.

Buddhabowl · 23/12/2021 13:28

Tadhg is a hard g like in tiger but without the 'er'
