Adley?

What do you think of Adley for a little girls name? I saw it on a baby name website and I think it is quite pretty. Is it an unusual name? Because I don’t know any, but I feel like I’ve heard of it before.

It just sounds like Hadley with an English accent. "Stop fumpin' yer sister, 'Adley!"

TuftyMarmoset · 19/12/2021 18:18

English accent? I’m English and definitely pronounce the H in Hadley Confused

TheYearOfSmallThings · 19/12/2021 18:21

London accent then, or estuary accent, or a few other places

SummaLuvin · 19/12/2021 18:21

Same, where I'm from there's a very good chance Hadley would become Had-leh rather than Had-lee, but the 'H' is definitely there!

It is a name with some use in the 19th century. Looking at the UK censuses, it looks as if there were a handful of girls called Adley born in each decade from the 1830s to the 1870s. From the 1880s it looks as if it gets rarer and is more often used for boys than girls. Sometimes it doesn't work well with the surname, such as Adley Lambley, girl, born 1837, and Adley Femley, girl, born 1846. In some cases, the name on the census may be a shortened form so some could be Adelaides originally, but looking at the birth records some are definitely Adleys.

Doesn't sound like any kind of name I've ever heard of. No.

Luredbyapomegranate · 19/12/2021 18:40

@lottiegarbanzo

Odd. Looks like 'adley (i.e. Hadley, with the H dropped).

Adeline, Adela, Adele and Adelaide are all lovely, real, recognisable, names.

Yes this - Addy would work as a fine nn for any of these
AliceMcK · 20/12/2021 18:47

Reminds me of A for Adley, my 4yo is obsessed with watching her on YouTube.

liveforsummer · 20/12/2021 19:33

Brigs to mind addled or oddly. Sorry no. Never heard it as a name and there's probably a good reason.

MirandaBlu · 20/12/2021 19:43

Just seeing the title of your post I immediately thought of Adlai - very established Hebrew name (there's one in the Old Testament), but traditionally male.

Nothing wrong with Adley for a girl if you like the surname-as-firstname style, but I do expect people hearing it without seeing it might confuse it with the much more popular Hadley.

Cindie943811A · 20/12/2021 20:13

Might get called Madly at school

MozzarellaMonster · 20/12/2021 21:04

My first reaction was ooo I like it

lottiegarbanzo · 21/12/2021 08:38

Badly.

Adlai is a nice name but very different sound.

NecklessMumster · 21/12/2021 09:21

I know a little boy called Adley, he's 5 and name came out of a baby names book

Greenmarmalade · 21/12/2021 09:22

Dislike it

FluffyCushion123 · 21/12/2021 09:30

Ooh no but for a different reason…Am I the only one who dislikes the sort of tongue clicking you get when you say the ‘dl’ together?

Pemba · 21/12/2021 14:34

Never heard of it, but it looks like a surname. Nothing pretty about it, and I wouldn't use it for a girl or boy.

WakeUpLockie · 21/12/2021 14:57

MUCH prefer Hadley.

delshell · 21/12/2021 15:50

Not a massive fan, if I'm perfectly honest. Not a pretty name and sounds more masculine to me.

CaitlinEJ · 23/12/2021 23:48

I’ve heard it and like it, never met one though

Suzi888 · 24/12/2021 01:09

@Thissucksmonkeynuts

A is for Adley is a god awful YouTube chanel with a screechy family with a greasy haired dad and an unfathomably enthusiastic mum. That spoils it for me.

Awful

Changethetoner · 24/12/2021 12:49

Never heard of it. Makes me think of Bradley.
