Both my kids names are on your boy list and I wouldn't have thought of them as unusual or unique 🤷‍♀️

WeasilyPleased · 16/12/2021 22:31

Most are pretty mainstream but how would you like to be called Zero...as in nothing? Worst, cruellest name I've ever seen on here.

Twizbe · 16/12/2021 22:34

I've met kids with nearly all of these names. They don't seem too out there to me, not my taste though.

I will say, I know a Khari and he's a boy. The river Styx is the gateway to the underworld in Greek mythology ... not a good look for a person

Just seen Zeppelin. I'd drop that one too. It's an air ship. That and the Zeppelinfeld was a Nazi parade ground in Nuremberg.

The girls names aren’t quirky (apart from Zero which I don’t like). Most of the boys names aren’t quirky either.

VanillaAndOrange · 18/12/2021 14:03

My top choices would be Iris and either Patrick or Angus. I notice those are not the most unusual names on your list!

Zero and Saxon sound more like boys' names to me. I kind of like Saxon for a boy, although I don't know if I'd use it (my actual DC have got quite traditional names).

For what it's worth, the boy's name I loved and was talked out of using was Jago.

I’ve taught kids with most of these names so not at all too out there. I like Xanthe and Tabitha (taught girls with these names, both lovely). For boys I’m not too sure about Styx. Not keen on many from that list actually (though I am Scottish so Angus and Hamish are quite sweet). Actually thinking again, I quite like Rex. I like short names.

People are so mean on here Sad. Of course not everyone is going to like every name. I thought OP was asking for suggestions of names like these, not how much people hate these names.

I have an unusual name and I've always loved that. So much easier than being one of a few.

A couple of my top names are on your lists! Raven and Phoenix. I also like Silas, Cassius, Clementine, Juniper, Jonah, Winter, Maeve, Sylvie and Fern. I love playing the name game.

(P.s. one of our children is called Indigo, which I did feel was maybe a bit too far at the time, but we have literally never had a negative comment (to our face 😂) and that's in 6 years. Good luck!

This looks like my register at the school where I work. Lots of alternative, quirky parents, many of whose kids are are growing up to be straight as a die and very conventional, just by dint of their own special, unique personalities developing freely.
Naming a person is such a huge responsibility. I look back at my initial list for DC1 and cringe; I thought they'd appreciate my 'gift' of an unusual name, and was unable to see how this was "making it about me". I reined myself in at the last moment and chose something more understated, a clean slate upon which my DC would be able to craft their own personalities. So glad I did. For all my own hippie, alternative schtick, neither of my DC are anyhing like me and naming them "in my image" would have done their individuality a disservice. I've a gothy punk and a mad scientist cheerleader, both with
timeless and classic, internationally viable names.
