I see some people count the name emily as a classic and it confuses me because it only gained popularity in 90s/2000s and was very popular in America. To me it was just a naming fad and the only Emily’s I know are teenagers. It was practically a unique name till then? Can someone please tell me why they think it’s anywhere near in the same bracket as Elizabeth,Hannah,Sarah?

I was born in 1990. There were 7 Emily’s in a class of 30.

Is your name Emily OP?

Kanaloa · 14/12/2021 19:52

It’s a fine name. I know a young Emily and twi adult ones. I think it’s very wearable, not particularly dated as obviously it has a long history of use, and a nice smart name for any type of child.

I wouldn’t worry about it becoming a ‘meme’ because any name could? My son has a friend with a name that’s now widely known from a TikTok/vine video but he was named that before. When people reference it he just says ‘haha yeah, but it was my name before that!’

I know Emilies of all ages. It's as classic as it gets to my ears. Timeless.

WeasilyPleased · 14/12/2021 22:33

This again?

NotTheOriginalFeargalSharkey · 14/12/2021 23:11

My great nan was named Emily. In 1902. I don't think it's too modern?

AlexanderArnold · 14/12/2021 23:15

The Emily of New Moon books are responsible for a lot of US Emilys. They're set in the nineteenth century iirc

DD's best friend is called Emily (aged 5) and I also know a 7 & a 9 year old Emily.

Blueblossombush · 14/12/2021 23:38

My sister in law was an Emily
She died in 2000 from an illness called battens disease
It’s a beautiful name-it won’t ever date-strong women before her where named Emily
It was one I wanted for my dds (before I knew of her)
It’s one of those names that suit a baby right through to an old lady
I think it’s very fresh and pretty

And yet your command of written English suggests that you are so well-read!

😱😂

newnameforthistbread · 14/12/2021 23:42

What difference does it make to you??? Don't call your child that name if you don't like it/think it is dated/too popular/too common etc etc etc.

Thedogscollar · 15/12/2021 01:50

I've posted on your other thread.
Emily is a classic and a beautiful name. End off.

EishetChayil · 15/12/2021 10:11

What is your beef with this name, OP?? Did your husband run off with an Emily?

MadeOfStarStuff · 15/12/2021 10:27

You seem to care an awful lot about something you seemingly couldn’t be bothered to even Google Hmm

zingally · 17/12/2021 15:24

Emily is a lovely classic name. I know of an Emily in her 90s, one in her late 30s, one who is 13 or so, and another who is 7.

AnFiaRuaNua · 17/12/2021 16:13

It's a nice name but I do think she could end up feeling that her name really badly dated her. Right now, Emily still seems like a young person's name but by the time she's just 30, the majority of Emilys will be about 50. Nothing wrong with that, I'm 50! Being 50 is not a crime.

My aunt had a baby and when she mentioned that the baby's name was Emily she said "well, thats a very old fashioned name"

This was in the 80s

Swirlywoo · 17/12/2021 17:34

You really don't like the name Emily do you OP?

Hummingbirdcake · 17/12/2021 17:37

Emily is a classic. Emily Bronte? My great granny was called Emily, also a few people in their forties and a couple of little ones.

SuperDuperC · 17/12/2021 17:37

My daughter is an Emily and she is fantastically classic! It's a lovely name and me thinks an Emily has crossed you at some point...? I don't like any names linked to girls I didn't like at some stage in my life 😂
