Too popular?

I’m having a little girl soon. She’s probably going to be called Trixie (Beatrix), my son is called Ned (Edward)….but I can’t let go of the name Tiggy (Antigone). My Husbands vote is Beatrix- Is Trixie becoming very popular? Any opinions or other suggestions?? I like a longer name with a cheeky short version.

Tiggy sounds too much like a dogs name. Trixie is sweet but fun

bellalou1234 · 12/12/2021 19:39

My best friend has a tabitha with nn tiggy

TerribleCustomerCervix · 12/12/2021 19:43

Tiggy and Ned sounds like a duo from a Beatrix Potter story.

(Ned is lovely, it’s just the combination!)

GemmaRuby · 12/12/2021 19:45

There’s been a Trixie thread before and the consensus was it’s a name for a drag queen or a poodle (I’m afraid I agree).

What about Araminta (Minty)

mammajustkilledagnat · 12/12/2021 19:48

Tiggy is a nickname for a cat called Tigger. And Trixie is a twee horrid name (sorry!). You could go very retro and have a Beatrice nn Tricia?

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 12/12/2021 19:50

The most popular names are given to less than one percent of babies. My DD has a top 10 name... in five schools and two nurseries, plus swimming, cubs, dance, sport etc she has never been in the same class as another.

Neither Beatrix or Beatrice are top 100 (but they would be combined.)

toastofthetown · 12/12/2021 19:51

The data in England and Wales shows that Tricia as a standalone name is rare (23 babies born last year). Beatrix is steady at #164 which is significantly less popular than Edward.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 12/12/2021 20:09

Edward is very classic/traditional and quite popular (even with the less common nn Ned - which is my fave nn for it too!), so for me Beatrix "fits" much better. Beatrix (Trixie) is still relatively underused (I don't think it's ever been in the top 100), so even though it's rising I personally wouldn't worry about it's popularity.

I know siblings don't have to "match" exactly, but even though I do like Antigone (I tend to like the sound of most classical origin names) - it's very unusual so it really stands out in comparison imo.

Other traditional names with cute/quirky nn's that sound good with Edward to me -
Harriet (Hattie)
Juliet (Letty)
Josephine (Posy/Effie)
Antonia (Anya/Nina)

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 12/12/2021 20:13

Or you could maybe consider Tabitha (reasonably uncommon but not as unusual as Antigone/Tiggy) with the nn Tibby instead of Tabby?

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 12/12/2021 20:19

I am stating with confidence, if without any evidence, that Trixie is definitely nowhere near being 'too popular'.

Isn't that the name of the glam nurse in Call the Midwife? That show's been around for yonks so if Trixie were going to surge it would have done so by now.

ChocolateRiver · 12/12/2021 20:29

I’ve never come across a Trixie in real life and I’ve been teaching for 16 years so I don’t think it’s that popular.

SE13Mummy · 12/12/2021 20:38

I know quite a few teens named Beatrice or Beatrix but they all go by Bea rather than Trixie. I don't know any Trixies nor have I taught any in the twenty years I've been teaching.

Other names that might be along the same lines...

Felicity - Fliss, Fizzy
Josephine - Josie, Jo
Miriam - Miri, Mim
Penelope - Nell, Penny, Pip

Synchrony · 12/12/2021 21:48

I love Trixie and never met one in my life.
I quite like Antigone, but if your husband doesn't that's all that really matters. Middle name?

CatsArePeople · 12/12/2021 22:08

they are popular names for cats.

foxgoosefinch · 12/12/2021 22:10

Solution: just call her Beatrix with nn Tiggy? Then it’s just a sweet Beatrix Potter reference.

There’s no law that says nicknames must be diminutives. You can have any nickname you like!

I knew a Tiggy at school who was short for Victoria!

GuckGuckDoose · 12/12/2021 22:16

Antigone is fabulous, and Tiggy is lovely. Stick to your guns OP! Beatrix is nowhere near as nice IMO.

Santahatesbraisedcabbage · 12/12/2021 22:17

Ds7 has a Bea in his class. Beatrice..

SometimesRavenSometimesParrot · 12/12/2021 22:19

You could do Beatrix with Busy as a nickname like Addisons mum in Greys Anatomy

TuftyMarmoset · 12/12/2021 22:23

I definitely prefer Beatrix over Antigone. Other names can give the nn Tiggy though- I knew a Tegan who went by it.

wingsofabird · 13/12/2021 07:26

Clementine

Jemima

Verity

irishfarmer · 13/12/2021 11:58

I like Beatrix, and I like Trixie. I've never meet one, and loved Trixie in call the midwife.

Flutterflybutterby · 13/12/2021 12:12

I adore Beatrix. My Tabitha is sometimes called Tiggy.

Trixie is lovely. Never met one or even heard of one IRL. I don't love Beatrix, but it's probably the best option to give Trixie a full name.

Tiggy is a sweet nickname too, but I'm afraid I think Antigone is awful. The most famous Tiggy, the royal nanny Tiggy Legge-Bourke, is really an Alexandra, so I agree with PPs saying it can come from anywhere.
