Our little boy is due early 2022 and DH and I are still struggling to come to an agreement on a name! Our top two choices at the moment are Oscar or Jenson. Can I ask everyone’s thoughts on which one they prefer?

Oscar definitely. Jenson to me sounds like a naughty child and I personally dislike surnames as first names.

helpmum2003 · 11/12/2021 17:20

Oscar is lovely. I also don't like surnames as first names.

user1493494961 · 11/12/2021 17:31

Oscar's nice, Jenson isn't.

Lushplease · 11/12/2021 17:34

I really, really like Oscar.
I don't dislike Jenson but it's a little bit popular where I live.

OrangeAndYellowAndBlue · 11/12/2021 17:34

Oscar is lovely.

TuftyMarmoset · 11/12/2021 17:35

Definitely Oscar. I’m also in the camp of disliking surnames as first names. Also I think due to the F1 connection it has a slightly less classy vibe.

TuftyMarmoset · 11/12/2021 17:35

It being Jenson in the last sentence, sorry.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 11/12/2021 17:36

Oscar.

Jenson might become Jen, which is a girls name. Personally I don’t like names ending in ‘Son’ as they are so like surnames anyway.

ratussbaguss · 11/12/2021 17:39

I don't like either one, but at least Oscar is a proper name, not a surname

Sansa717 · 11/12/2021 17:47

I like Oscar!

SnowdropFox · 11/12/2021 18:15

I prefer Oscar myself. I like F1 and Jenson Button seems like a great guy compared to some of the arrogant drivers but I prefer Oscar.

MerryMarigold · 11/12/2021 18:27

Oscar is a bit 2 a penny where I live and I don't particularly like it anyway. So Jenson I think, more unusual and it sounds nice. They are quite different, I would say Oscar is quite classic and Jenson is more modern.

wingsofabird · 11/12/2021 19:00

Love both!

wingingit33 · 11/12/2021 19:16

Oscar by a country mile

WeDidntMeanToGoToSea · 11/12/2021 19:19

Not hugely keen on Oscar, but it's much, much better than Jenson. Like others on this thread, I dislike surnames as first names, and also think they will date - so in the same way you know a Darren was probably born between 1965 and 1980, you'll know a Jenson (a British one anyway) was probably born between about 2010 and 2025.

MrsB902 · 11/12/2021 19:38

Thanks for your opinions everyone, Oscar is my favourite too but my DH prefers Jenson. I’ll have to tell him the general mumsnet consensus 🤣

Oscar. It might be quite popular/trendy at the moment but it does have a traditional feel too. Sorry, but I'm less keen on the "surname as first name" trend - all the Mason's, Jackson's, Harrison's, Jenson's etc, I'd worry it could be a fad.

Ikeameatballs · 11/12/2021 21:34

I don’t dislike Jenson but I do prefer Oscar.

Other ideas would be:

Magnus
Reuben
Harold
Lloyd
Seth

Onlinedilema · 11/12/2021 21:41

I much prefer Oscar. Jensen is more of a surname which I really dislike. What happens when all these kids with surnames as first names meet a partner with the same name as a surname and they have a child or get married. So Jenson Jones meets Sophie Jensen. She quite rightly insists on the child having her surname so does Jensen Jones become Jensen Jones Jensen?
Also the only Jensens I have met are naughty.

floatinginmyhomie · 11/12/2021 21:42

Oscar is. Lovely name

IVflytrap · 11/12/2021 23:18

Definitely Oscar Smile

Luredbyapomegranate · 12/12/2021 01:17

Oscar is very nice

Jenson is terrible

LadyWithLapdog · 12/12/2021 01:43

Predictably I also prefer Oscar

DramaAlpaca · 12/12/2021 03:44

I don't like Oscar, so of the two I'd pick Jenson.
