Ive just had a baby girl called Mabli. Pronounced Mab-Lee. We live in England and a lot of people are pronouncing it May blee. I never thought this would be an issue. How would you pronounce it if you just saw it written down?

Exactly as you're saying it... May-blee seems odd to me!

Congrats on your new baby Flowers

IAmHereForTheFood · 11/12/2021 16:35

Mab Lee when I saw the thread title

Cactu · 11/12/2021 16:36

I haven’t heard the name before and would probably say May-blee as it’s just more similar to other girls names that I do know.

WarblingWith · 11/12/2021 16:37

I thought Mab-lee when I saw the title too.
Congratulations on your little ones!

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 11/12/2021 16:38

I would say May- blee
Congratulations x

OrangeAndYellowAndBlue · 11/12/2021 16:38

That's odd of them. Maybe they're connecting it to words like "able" or something?

I would have said Mab-lee.

WarblingWith · 11/12/2021 16:39

One, obviously!
People always get names with A in them wrong. My surname is one of those. It's perfectly simple but it gets made complicated quite often as it's a fairly unusual one

PaulRuddsWife · 11/12/2021 16:42

I wasn't sure how you'd pronounce it, tbh. I suppose my thinking would be it it has the 'may' sound in it like Mabel.

Obviously, if I'd heard you say it, I wouldn't go around still pronouncing it Mayblee.

sageandbasil · 11/12/2021 16:47

Thanks for the replies. Even when we tell people they still pronounce it May-Blee it's so annoying. Poor girl she's going to have a life time of this.

It's not everyone just mostly family members 🙄

SaticoyStreet · 11/12/2021 17:28

Ugh that’s a bit frustrating! Hopefully the family will eventually get it right. As for other people, you’ll just have get used to it I suppose 😬 People close to her will eventually always say it right (I hope anyway!)

UsernameIsHarderThanBabyName · 11/12/2021 18:01

I’d say it Mab-Lee

Honeyroar · 11/12/2021 18:02

I'd have thought it was Mab-li (like Mably).

Fireweeds · 11/12/2021 18:04

I’d always assumed it was Mab-lee & it’s a wonderful name :)
I would also wonder if they’re getting confused with Mabel somehow.

User00000000 · 11/12/2021 18:04

I'd probably say may-blee but I'm Scottish so maybe that makes a difference?

SnowdropFox · 11/12/2021 18:05

May blee here too. May be an accent thing.

CaffiSaliMali · 11/12/2021 18:17

I would say Mab-Lee but I already knew how to pronounce it.

I have a Welsh name in England which most people pronounce wrong. It annoys my mother but doesn't really bother me as it's my norm. The misspellings annoy me more as it's usually from people at work who can see how to spell it from my email address.

I value the heritage and tradition of my name far more highly than having a name which doesn't reflect that which people would get right every time and would never change it (sometimes people do suggest I change it to something English).

Mabli is a beautiful name OP.

NotTheOriginalFeargalSharkey · 11/12/2021 18:28

Mab-lee. As far as I know, it's Welsh? And the Welsh language doesn't "do" an ay sound. All 'a' is pronounced like the a in cat and hat?
Beautiful name anyway.

PurBal · 11/12/2021 18:29

I thought it was Mabel when I misread the title but would probably pronounce as you do.

JakeyRolling · 11/12/2021 18:34

May-blee. But they I initially read it as a yooneek spelling of Mabel.

Tal45 · 11/12/2021 18:36

Never heard it but I love it! I would say Mab-lee

LetHimHaveIt · 11/12/2021 18:44

I don't think it's that odd, unless you're actually Welsh or living in Wales. Are you? I wouldn't necessarily assume 'May-blee' but 'Mabli' is a short walk from 'Mabel' so that's why people are making that mistake. They're thinking it's a twist on 'Mabel'.

DeliaOwens · 11/12/2021 18:46

Honestly when I saw the title of this post, I thought it was Mabil and you were being quirky with the spelling of Mabel

GuyFawkesDay · 11/12/2021 18:53

Mah-blee. I teach one, and I have a Welsh background though. Lovely, lovely name.

tiredanddangerous · 11/12/2021 18:57

I'm Welsh so Mab-lee. Once you've corrected everyone once it'll be fine. Congratulations op Flowers
