With a K

So we have decided on the name Eric.

I quite like it spelt Erik. However, he will spend his entire life saying "Eric with a K.

So do we go Eric or Erik. Or least favourite Eirik

'Erik' isn't that uncommon?
If you like it, go for it

TheMuggleStruggle · 09/12/2021 00:14

I like Eric better. It looks softer. Erik always looks misspelled to me or one of those names that's just changed 'to be different'. No offence to any Erik's out there!

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/12/2021 00:16

Eric will be easier for him.

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 09/12/2021 00:26

It's fine. I have a name that's "with an x" (not saying which letter as outing. It's not x 😂 and it barely takes a second to say. I have to say it every time as there are two common spellings of my name. It's never been a problem.

Kanaloa · 09/12/2021 00:44

I prefer Eric. Classic and simply.

Mrstwiddle · 09/12/2021 00:45

Another vote for Eric. The “k” looks harsh.

pollysshoe · 09/12/2021 00:58

If I see it with a K my first thought is that it is someone from Scandinavia and I should say it ee-rick (rather than errick).

DramaAlpaca · 09/12/2021 01:03

Difficult choice. I prefer the look of Erik, it has a kind of cool Scandi vibe. Eric looks more vintage. Odd how the look of the name written down affects how I see it, even though in the UK pronunciation is the same for both. I think I'd have to choose Erik if it was up to me.

StrawberrySanta · 09/12/2021 01:14

Google Erik animal crossing- he's so cute and it reminds me of him so I quite like it

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/12/2021 03:25

I prefer the look of Erik personally (Scandi/Viking/Euro cool imo rather than retro/vintage like Eric), but if you also have a surname that usually needs spelling I'd possibly stick with more common in the UK, Eric (Eirik is neither one nor the other so is a complete no go imo). I usually have to spell my surname and it's no big deal, but it might be more annoying to have to spell both first name and surname.

And yes imo he will often have to say "Eric with a K" but so do lots of people with even more commonplace names- think of all the C/Katherine/Katharine/Kathryn's out there for one example, they seem to have got used to it.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 09/12/2021 06:43

I have a name I need to spell. It’s a PITA. I’d go for “Eric”, as the default spelling in English speaking countries (assuming you are in one; if you’re in Scandinavia, knock yourself out with Erik).
DD’s name has several spellings, she deliberately has the most common one.

beginnerwitch · 09/12/2021 07:00

I have an Erik with a k. It's not ben a problem. It's quick to say and people remember it.

AuntieStella · 09/12/2021 07:35

Erik is a dashing Viking. Eric is a wimpy character in a sitcom

SummaLuvin · 09/12/2021 09:17

I prefer the look of Eric, and I believe it is the more commonly used spelling in the UK. I associate Erik as being Scandinavian, it is definitely a legitimate spelling and not that unusual. Either way he may have to clarify his spelling regardless of what you choose so go with your preference of Erik. Like PP said, many popular names have multiple spellings like Catherine or Alice or Sophia, and it's really not a big deal.

StrawberryFever · 09/12/2021 09:24

I prefer Erik too. Depending on who he's talking to he may well have to clarify with a C anyway, so you might as well go for the name you like.

Also a lot of people are just a bit shit at spelling and you have to spell your name out no matter what - I have a name which is neither particularly unusual nor have I ever known anyone who spells it a different way, but I still have to spell it out anyway otherwise I get all kind of weird and wonderful spellings.

luverlybubberly · 09/12/2021 10:28

I am a name that spelt in 2 ways. It doesn't annoy me to say "with a K"
I think the Scandinavian Erik spelling is more modern and would go for that tbh. Eric has some negative associations like Cartman and Trump which is another good reason to pick the k

Edenember · 09/12/2021 11:23

I’d go Erik. I see what your saying and it’s a wise thing to consider, but I think Erik has a totally different feel to Eric on paper. It’s an established spelling not a yooneek spelling.

youngestisapsycho · 09/12/2021 11:37

My DD has spent her life saying Katy with a Y... something he will get used to

TuftyMarmoset · 09/12/2021 11:40

Yes he will have to say Erik with a K unless you are obviously Scandinavian (like he’s Erik Larssen or something). I prefer Eric for that reason, why make life more annoying.

OrangeAndYellowAndBlue · 09/12/2021 12:09

About 400 Erics per year and 140 Eriks. More than 20% of the total have a K. So he'll probably need to specify "with a k" or "with a c" sometimes no matter which way you spell it.

Go for the spelling you like best.

NigellaSeed · 09/12/2021 12:14

Erik look scandi. I prefer it. I have a name that can be spelt several ways. It doesn't bother me to spell it every time I need to

Wd2b87 · 09/12/2021 12:29

Thanks everyone. Very helpful. 🙂

I disagree that he’d need to specify with a c. It’s the long-standing standard spelling in English so would be the default for the majority of people.
