Which three of my favorite girl names do you like the best?

Charlotte
Violet
Lily
Rose
Rosamund (prn “Rose-uh-mund”)
Julia
Eve
Eva
Diana
Nadia
Sylvie
Margot “Maggie” or “Meg”
Magdalena “Maggie” or “Meg”
Genevieve
Caroline
Louisa
August
Elizabeth “Elle” or “Eliza”

Also, what qualities do you look for in a name? I look for glam, romance, and musicality, but do you rank quirkiness and distinctiveness higher?

Julia, Louisa and Caroline are my favourites, followed by Rose, Lily and Eve.

I like fairly classic names that sound nice to me and that I like the look of written down. I tend towards shorter names, but have a soft spot for Caroline.

RavenclawsRoar · 08/12/2021 23:27

Sylvie
Rose
Elizabeth

Newbabynewhouse · 08/12/2021 23:27

Charlotte and violet... my dds middle name is violet.. i liked charlotte but DP didnt want it xx

TuftyMarmoset · 08/12/2021 23:33

My favourites from your list are probably Elizabeth (although I don’t care for Elle), Julia and Rose.

I look at the meaning of the name and the actual sound (harsh consonants, vowels etc). I think it’s a bit odd actually to be looking for names that are glam and romantic - what if she’s not into those things? And people will have differing perspectives, for example I don’t find Caroline glam and romantic at all.

stmw123 · 09/12/2021 00:08

Elizabeth
Charlotte
Caroline (love nn Carrie)

octoberfarm · 09/12/2021 00:21

Magdalena (Maggie)
Eva
And Lily

But especially love the first Smile I tend to look for a name that sounds and looks beautiful, I can picture on a child of ours, and that I'd be happy to have myself. Congratulations!

Immaculatemisconception · 09/12/2021 00:23

Elizabeth, Julia and Charlotte. I also like Anna.

Fl0w3ry · 09/12/2021 00:24

Violet, Charlotte and Genevieve.

danascully96 · 09/12/2021 00:26

I thought August was unisex? Based on books I’ve read, August isn’t too strange in a woman to me.

Well, it’s definitely the strangest on my list and doesn’t go with the others, so I’ll abandon it. Grin

@tuffymarmoset Fair point, but I think with most names, you’re taking a gamble as to the child’s personality unless you just stick to the classics. If I choose a unisex name, my child may wish for a girlier or more womanly name. Or if they get a feisty name, they may wish for something more mild. I will be fully accepting if they’re tomboys or shy souls or totally the opposite of what their names suggest, but I also don’t think any of these names are going to curse them to a life of torment if they aren’t glamorous or romantic. There’s a wide middle ground in names and nicknames are a blessing in these uncertain situations.

Sylvie, Rosamund, Julia would be my imaginary triplets if I chose from your list. I do like musical romantic names but equally like short, no frills, neutral names

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/12/2021 03:10

I actually love all of your choices apart from August (too masculine for me), Margot (too suddenly trendy) and Violet (too like Violent and I prefer Shakespearean Viola anyway). Apart from those imo, your choices mostly seem quite classic and elegant sounding which is my personal taste. And apart from Charlotte, Lily and Eva your choices aren't top 50 popular either, which is always an extra bonus imo (although I do think popularity really doesn't matter as much when they are classic names as those are and therefore less likely to date).

My fave is Julia Blush (as I'm a Julia and it's served me well - classical, international and easy to pronounce and spell, yet it's never been over popular in this country). But Eve, Rose, Rosamund, Sylvie/Sylvia, Elizabeth and Diana were all on my list if DS had been a girl.

sunflowerroses · 09/12/2021 03:20

Charlotte, Rose and Elizabeth (but don't like those shortenings). Lily also nice. Not Rosamund if that's how you'd want it pronounced,

Chunkymenrock · 09/12/2021 03:30

Julia, Genevive, Louisa.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/12/2021 03:53

Oh sorry, misread - if forced to pick only 3 then Julia, Eve and Rose.

GreenWhiteViolet · 09/12/2021 04:39

Julia, Charlotte, Nadia.

I choose based on sound and personal associations. Popularity doesn't bother me unless it's a name that seems faddish and is going to end up feeling dated - my own name is like that and it's easy for people to guess when I was born based on it. I like names ending in -a for girls but dislike -ie endings.

WhoppingBigBackside · 09/12/2021 07:27

Caroline - lovely
Diana - lovely
Louisa - lovely

Charlotte - good enough for a princess
Elizabeth “Elle” or “Eliza” - not keen on Elle or Eliza
Violet - not keen
Lily - overused
Rose - ok
Rosamund (prn “Rose-uh-mund”) - not with that pronunciation
Julia - nice but don't like Jules
Eve - nice but so many Evies, Evas, Evelyns and Avas
Eva - dislike
Nadia - ok
Sylvie - dislike
Margot “Maggie” or “Meg” - all diminutives of Margret, just use one of them
Magdalena “Maggie” or “Meg” - too long
Genevieve - not keen
August - boy's name

LittleGwyneth · 09/12/2021 12:29

I think Louisa is due a come back, it's so pretty, and I like Lou as a shortening.

CinderellaFant · 09/12/2021 14:42

Margot
Lily
Rose

BlueFlavour · 09/12/2021 14:51

Julia, Eva, Sylvie, Eliza, Louisa for me!
Pemba · 10/12/2021 13:23

Some lovely names there, my top three would be:

Julia
Eve /Eva
Caroline

Although I love a lot of the others too. Sylvie is very pretty, but apparently considered a middle-aged name in France. What's wrong with Sylvia?

Rosamund, I think the usual pronunciation is 'Roz-uh-mund'. If you want the 'rose' sound, how about Rosalie, Rosemary or Rosanna?

danascully96 · 11/12/2021 21:25

@pemba I like Sylvia too! Maybe that should be revived 🤔

Yeah, I’m assuming most will pronounce Rosamund “Roz-uh-mund,” so I’ll just go with that pronunciation if I pick it. Thank you everyone so far for the fab comments! ❤️

Rose
Louisa

RestingStitchFace · 11/12/2021 22:36

I really like a lot of your list tbh.

If pushed, I'd go for:
Violet
Rosamund (but pronounced Ros-a-mund)
Margot
Louisa

And I LOATHE Eva....

Just10moreminutesplease · 11/12/2021 22:44

My favourites are Violet, Rose, and Sylvie.

When naming my son I looked for classic names that felt like they’d work for a wide range of personalities. Some names are gorgeous but seem to conjure up an image of a specific type of person in my mind.
