Nadia or Zoe?

Hi everyone,
We were choosing between Nadia and Zoe for a recent born. Our preferred one was [one of these two] but then an English friend of ours said she doesn't look like one, she looks like a [the other name] to me, without knowing that we were considering that other name, which I thought was uncanny! The girl has a Hispanic last name; we live in the UK.

  • What would a Nadia or a Zoe "look" like to you? What image does it conjure up?
  • Does either name place you in any particular age group / social or professional category / geography etc?
  • Which one do you like better?
Would appreciate your thoughts as neither of us is from the UK so unsure how these would be perceived locally

I think Nadia is absolutely beautiful - elegant, unusual and yet easy to say and spell.
Zoe is nice too but a lot more common (not in a bad way!)

Pinkchocolate · 06/12/2021 19:29

I love the name Zoe and wanted it for my daughter. I think it’s timeless and pretty and impossible to mispronounce. Zoe could be from absolutely anywhere.
Nadia is nice, also easy to pronounce but as a teacher I find it really common, though that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Marlena1 · 06/12/2021 19:35

I love Zoe. I also think it's quite timeless and I think it means life. Both lovely names thoughSmile

WellTidy · 06/12/2021 19:37

Nadia for me. I really like it. Never on our short list because we didn’t want a name that ended in an ‘a’ with our surname. And then had boys anyway!

freelions · 06/12/2021 19:43

I like both names but Zoe is my favourite of the 2

I wouldn't have any particular expectations of what either would look like tbh

DotDotDotDotDot · 06/12/2021 19:56

I think Zoe is lovely, I agree it’s a timeless, well know in the UK but has never been overused. Although shouldn’t it be Zoë? Nadia is nice too, I worked with a lovely lady called this years ago, she was from an Arabic background. People did pronounce it more Naah-dia rather than a short Na-dia (which sounds nicer to me).

Luredbyapomegranate · 06/12/2021 20:03

Nothing wrong with either of them

Zoe is moderately popular, quite sweet, arguably a bit twee

Nadia is less standard, but not super unusual. Moderately popular in the 70s/early 80s alongside names with a similarly vaguely Russian feel eg Natasha, Tamara. I guess Nadia Comeneci might have had something to do with that.

VenusClapTrap · 06/12/2021 20:54

Nadia! I love this name; it was on my shortlist for dd. Strong, elegant, classy name. Interestingly when I posted on here about it (more than a decade ago) it was slated! Nice to see it getting a better reception here now on this thread. It doesn’t get suggested often on here.

milkysmum · 06/12/2021 21:03

Ooh I like both of those names actually! Neither are too 'out there' but not over used, nor dull either- I'd struggle to choose between them I think.

Roseandgeranium · 06/12/2021 21:09

I like Zoe. Nadia’s too close to node or nodule or gonad for my liking. Probably just me though.

SusannahHolmes · 06/12/2021 21:10

Zoë is timeless. It never got so popular that it aged in the way that Sarah, Claire, etc did. I would say pretty classless too.

Nadia I like a bit less, not sure why. Again, pretty classless and timeless.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 06/12/2021 21:11

I love the sound of Nadia - it has an elegant, more international feel to me. I find Zoe has a more "quirky" sound, even though it is more popular in the UK. I don't know why but I visualise a Nadia as having darker hair/eyes and a sophisticated or classic style and Zoe as more lighter colouring and a arty or bohemian style. But neither suggest a particular age, social class or profession to me.

harmonyhall · 06/12/2021 21:12

I like Zoe

CoffeeRunner · 06/12/2021 21:14

Zoe is lovely.

Nadia is awful. A very ugly name.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 06/12/2021 21:17

The only Nadias I've ever met would have been born in the early 70s I think, so it feels like it would be unusual (in a good way) on a baby in 2021. I picture Nadias as being quite dark, maybe Middle Eastern or Mediterranean in appearance. But I wouldn't be stopped from using a name because of someone else's perception of it!

I know a couple of little Zoes. It's also a nice name, more common than Nadia, and I don't associate a particular look with it. There's Zooey Deschanel and Zoe Kravitz and they both look v different from each other.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 06/12/2021 21:19

Oh and congrats on the new arrival!

arcticfoxed · 06/12/2021 21:20

Love Zoe. Much nicer than Nadia!

HalleLouja · 06/12/2021 21:22

I love the name Zoe I am completely biased though.. Also its pretty multi cultural.

I would say Nadia is more Middle Eastern and also a beautiful name. Its more unusual but not out there.

MoominMeggy · 06/12/2021 21:23

I like Zoe - pretty, simple, not common but no unheard of, nice meaning, suits a little girl and grown woman.

Nadia is ok. Not massively keen. Nothing wrong with it... will probably get shortened to Nad, which I dislike...

Have you considered Naomi?

Vursayles · 06/12/2021 21:27

Nadia - beautiful and so unusual. A lovely change from the usual Olivia, Sophia, Lily, Amelia or Ava.

hivemindneeded · 06/12/2021 21:27

I prefer Zoe.

Pinkglower · 06/12/2021 21:44

Zoe

WeasilyPleased · 06/12/2021 22:51

I love Zoe. Its a bouncy happy name. I would consider it myself if it wasn't DH's ex!

canarycages · 06/12/2021 23:08

Nadia is lovely, not too keen on Zoe, but both are equally great names.

RuthW · 07/12/2021 12:19

Nadia (said Nardia) is lovely. I dislike Zoe. Very 90s.
