Baby girl names shortlist?!

Hi everyone 👋

First baby due in less than 8 weeks and we cannot decide on a name! We prefer traditional, nothing too 'out there'. We thought we had decided on Amelia but that seems to have gone out of the window now as we've had too long to think about it!

Middle name is going to be Grace

Surname is similar to Heston (was advised against posting actual surname)

Potential names:
-Amelia Grace

  • Emilia Grace (I much prefer this but worry it will just get pronounced as Amelia)
  • Charlotte Grace
  • Erin Grace
  • Ivy Grace
  • Evie Grace
  • Edie Grace
  • Elsie Grace
  • Mabel Grace
  • Martha Grace

Any thoughts on these names please? Or any suggestions with a nice name to go with surname similar to Heston?

It seems we tend to prefer names beginning with a vowel 😂

I feel like I'm losing my mind looking at baby name lists now 😭

Thanks!

@LauraChant how strange! Im glad we aren't related then as I'd have no baby names to pick from 😂 I think Erin is becoming my favourite as the days go by 😊

Defo Erin, not Eryn.
I don’t know why people say grace is a filler name? It’s a gorgeous name OP and I know a lot of people and don’t know any graces! People usually don’t share their middle names at all so it’s just for you and your family.
If you love Grace as middle name then go for it and don’t let Mumset name police put you off :)

@Elisemum, People say it's a filler middle name because it is a popular middle name, so seems unimaginative. If he first name is popular e.g. Lily, every other Lily or whatever will be Lily Grace/Rose/May
Elisemum · 02/12/2021 16:38

If I’m correct Nikki Hilton daughter is called Lilly Grace so yup maybe it is popular but still lovely

WhoppingBigBackside · 02/12/2021 16:48

Her daughter is Lily Grace @Elisemum.

If the surname is common, there may be several with the same full name

I know several Sarah Janes, Laura Janes, Sally Ann(e)s
and most Emmas I know are Emma Jane or Emma Louise

wingsofabird · 02/12/2021 17:13

Great names love Martha and Mabel
How about Marnie

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 02/12/2021 20:14

Most of your choices are a bit trendy for me personally, so I'd pick Charlotte. Yes, it's fairly popular but very classic and pretty timeless with some lovely historical namesakes - plus if there does happen to be another one in her class there's a variety of nn's to chose from (I especially like Callie).

Second choice would be lovely Shakespearean Emilia - but like you, I think it will be frequently confused with Amelia.

For vowel names - maybe classic Eleanor? Emmeline instead of Emilia? Antonia or Aurelia instead of Amelia?

DukkaDukka · 02/12/2021 20:21

Also middle names such as Grace are often hyphenated so there are endless Eva-Grace/Isla-Grace/Lily-Grace/Evie-Grace/Amelia-Grace/Ava-Grace’s. Substitute Grace with Rose or Mae/May/Mai and you have almost every girl name in the playground.

They’ll all date, just as Louise/Jane/Ann have as middle names. It’s not that they’re not pretty names, they’re just massively overused.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 02/12/2021 20:43

The only one I like, is the only one you don’t hear all the time and that’s Erin. I don’t see the point in middle names.

MinnieJackson · 02/12/2021 20:51

Edie or martha, love both. My sons best friend is Edie and i love her! She is so full of energy and vibrant! Also have cool connotations (if you like the 60's life Blush) of Edie Sedgwick

TalesOfDrunkennessAndCruelty · 02/12/2021 20:57

My choice would be Mabel

Luredbyapomegranate · 02/12/2021 20:58

They are pretty much all nice but Amelia, Emilia, Charlotte, Ivy, Lily and Evie are way overused - as is Grace as a middle name.
Erin and Elsie are OK, very of the moment, personally Martha just makes me think of kitchen drudge.

So I'd go for Mabel or Edith nn Edie (the eating disorder comment is ridiculous - it's a popular name).

Estella, Jasmine, Zoe, Chloe, Lucy, Emmeline, Emma, Cecilia, Seraphina, Leonora, Antonia, Adela, Serena, Ysella (Ee-zella) might all be good alternatives that aren't so common -

FindingMeno · 02/12/2021 21:00

Martha and Edie are my favourites.
Another suggestion - Esther Grace

Nancydrawn · 02/12/2021 21:01

A lot of these are very common (as in overused).

I'd go with Martha.

hopingforabrighterfuture2021 · 02/12/2021 21:05

All lovely names! Good luck with your choice.

Mumofgirls2017 · 02/12/2021 21:33

All of them are nice. Favourites are Elsie, Erin, Mabel, Martha

Flutterflybutterby · 02/12/2021 22:56

Grace is seen as a filler name because so many children have the middle name Grace, it's like this generation's Louise. It will spoil the name and in a few years it will seem dated and boring.

Why don't you use one if your other name choices as a more interesting middle name?

Erin Martha
Erin Mabel
Erin Charlotte

Etc

RedRobin100 · 03/12/2021 01:10

You have a good shortlist.
Maybe don’t try and decide now but wait and see what jumps out at you /sticks / when she’s here
That’s what I did. Had a shortlist of two - and one just seemed so obvious when he was here

2bazookas · 03/12/2021 01:21

Mabel Grace (Heston) is a lovely name; womanly and elegant .

I think its the repeated A sound that's so charming.

Elspethelf · 03/12/2021 02:10

Edie is my fave but your faves, Emilia and Erin are both lovely. I also gravitate towards E names

Chunkymenrock · 03/12/2021 02:42

The medical definition of Amelia is 'absence of limbs'. It also has the truly awful 'mealy' noise in it. I'm afraid it is such an ugly word. Uh-MEALY-uh. Dont do it!

The only ones I like are Martha and Erin. Definitely avoid the tedious Grace. Why not Faith if you'd like a one syllable middle name?

Elisemum · 03/12/2021 18:23

@Chunkymenrock sorry but I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything more stupid than this! Clearly you don’t like the name Amelia and you have every right to, but your explanation is ridiculous and stupid

WhoppingBigBackside · 03/12/2021 18:27

It's like Alexia, once you know it's a condition, you can't unsee it, @Elisemum

enorton · 03/12/2021 18:34

Thank you everyone, you've all definitely given us a lot to think about! 😊 hopefully once she is here it will be obvious what her name should be 🥰

Martha Grace is lovely. But all your names are great I think!
