What are your thoughts on Anthony?

OP posts:

Anthony sounds a bit dated, but Antonio is good. Ds’s middle name is Antonius, which is a family name but I really like it. FIL goes by Ton as a shortening.

TarasCrazyTiara · 24/11/2021 06:29

Like it, sounds heroic lol. Don’t get how it’s bad because it’s “dated” as others have said, of course it’s dated it’s been round since the Roman Empire like a lot of names.
Should all baby boys be named Hunter or Tesla or Styles or something?Hmm

TarasCrazyTiara · 24/11/2021 06:31

I know a kid called Anthony who isn’t known by a nickname so I don’t think that’s a garantee either if he refuses to go with the nickname.

Twizbe · 24/11/2021 06:32

I know a 4 year old Anthony. He's a sweet kids. I like the name so go for it.

parrotonmyshoulder · 24/11/2021 06:35

I don’t think the nicknames we seem to expect automatically happen. In my primary school we have quite a few longer, or easy to shorten, names that just stay as they are unless the family call them the nickname. Children don’t automatically shorten each other’s names to Tony, Vicky, Alex unless the adults do.
Different when they’re older, of course.

seriousandloyal · 24/11/2021 06:54

I really like it

Names dating has nothing to do with how old the name is. It’s to do with recent usage. Anthony is dated because it was popular until the 80s and has reduced hugely in popularity since then. If you met a father and his baby son, one called Theodore the other Anthony, most would assume the father was Anthony and the baby was Theodore. Both names have been around for a long time, but they have been popular in different generations.

Most people don’t say a name is bad because it’s dated. It’s just a piece of information about the name which may or may not be important to the OP. She asked for opinions. And I haven’t seen any posts anywhere on Mumsnet for people advocating for all boys to be called Tesla and Styles. Not sure why they’re the only alternatives to Anthony Hmm

Hathertonhariden · 24/11/2021 08:16

The two I know are both insistent on not shortening their name. Both are insufferable, arrogant misogynists so it wouldn't be top of my list.

Laquila · 24/11/2021 08:20

I'm not a huge fan but I LOVE Anton.

Some names do seem strange for babies until you meet one and it works...I know a baby Graeme and it's perfect for him!

thewhatsit · 24/11/2021 08:22

I don’t mind it at all but I do hate Tony so you’d have to force Ant or even Andy as a nickname.

TuftyMarmoset · 24/11/2021 08:30

I quite like it but I don’t like Ant or Tony so I’d probably use it as a middle name. I know two and they are both lovely but they are both in their 50s/60s.

I’m with them though - would you want to be Tony?! Anthony is quite nice as long as you Tony.
MeredithGreyishblue · 24/11/2021 13:07

Absolutely. If you're not called Anthony, you ought to be Tesla, Hunter or Styles. Stands to reason.

Dollywilde · 24/11/2021 13:09

DH and I realised the other day that we know three multimillionaires (who've all made their money setting up quite obscure companies from nothing) and all of them are called Anthony. So we're putting it on the list in case this DC is a boy Grin

Edenember · 24/11/2021 13:12

I prefer it with the ‘th’ sound - if you want the Antony pronunciation I’d spell it like that. Even though I prefer it, I can’t imagine a little Anthony (th) but I can imagine a little Antony. I’d be sure you’re ok with Ant or Tony though as it’s inevitable.

Have to agree with this for those I know with the name!!
KirstenBlest · 24/11/2021 20:26

Like it. Tony is fine but not keen on Ant

Antonio will be said with an UK accent, so gets a No from me.

TatianaBis · 24/11/2021 22:00

I prefer Antonio.

Largethighsbadeyes · 24/11/2021 22:56

It's in the same ball park as Gary, for me. Boring.

Also I used to work with an Ant and a Tony at the same job. Both wankers so that may colour my opinion.

TarasCrazyTiara · 25/11/2021 04:08

@toastofthetown

“Theodore” ? Seriously? I would definetly assume that was the fathers name. That sounds way more dated than Anthony, it’s like a name that was used only in Victorian times or something.
Sounds like something super pretentious middle class parents would name a poor kid.

sjxoxo · 25/11/2021 04:10

Don’t like either. Sorry! X

It's 198 in the latest list. Pretty popular!

TarasCrazyTiara · 26/11/2021 10:46

@MeredithGreyishblue

Lot of super pretentious middle class parents I guess. Theodores one of the poshest names there is. Guess the Mums thought it would be cute or something.

If you're middle class then why would it be pretentious to use a traditionally middle class name? Just because you don't like something doesn't mean it's pretentious.

MeredithGreyishblue · 26/11/2021 12:00

Aye, OK.
