How is Ianthe pronounced? Yanth-ee or Eye-ann-thee?

Shasha17 · 19/11/2021 16:08

Love Sylvie and Elowen

I like Robyn

Xanthe - not awful, but not the nicest sound to me
Ianthe - I prefer Xanthe if you are between the two
Signy - how are you planning to pronounce this? The English way would be Sig nee (or sigh nee depending on how it's read) but if you plan to use the Swedish pronunciation I think it will be hard work in the UK (pronunciation is at the top here)
Freyja - dull as dishwater and overused to the point of saturation
Sylvie - twee and bland
Rowan - fine, but popular. I've seen Rowan on three separate threads in the last day. Prefer it for a boy
Robyn - I don't like this spelling and I also prefer for a boy
Elowen - El- names are ubiquitous right now. There are 7 El- names in the top hundred at the moment, so pretty much anything starting with El- is a bit of a snooze for me
Lamorna - has a nice enough sound. If you live in Cornwall I'd avoid it due to the place name
Lowenna - it's ok, the 'wenna' sound isn't my favourite, but it's solid

I love Ianthe. It is a name we seriously considered for our oldest but decided to go with a name from a favourite book instead.

I also really like Pagan names. My son has a pagan name and my daughter due next month will also be given a pagan name.

All the names on your list are lovely. Sorry not much help

Greendaisydays · 19/11/2021 17:35

Hi I would pronounce it I-anthe

Hi we thought of this name as we have a Danish work colleague and she pronounces it Sig-nee so that’s how we were thinking

Ianthe is beautiful - lovely heritage/literary links with such a poetic feel, so would be my pick. But it does have pronunciation confusion (Eye- an- thee vs Ee- an-thee), so simpler but pretty and better known Xanthe could be "safer" in that regard.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 19/11/2021 21:52

I also like the lovely sounding Sylvie and Lowenna of your choices (and Signy if you have Scandi heritage/links - as it feels very Viking to me, even more so than popular Freyja!).

AuntDympna · 19/11/2021 22:07

I love Xanthe and Signy.
Also Rowan and Robyn.
The other names aren't my taste - they make me think of scented candles and crystals, which I am sure are lovely if you go in for that.

Just pick a normal name that your kid won't have to explain for literally the rest of their life (whilst their teacher/doctor/boss sighs and makes a judgement which sadly people do)

Luredbyapomegranate · 19/11/2021 22:37

Prefer Ianthe to Xanthe (it’s 3 syllables though Eye-AN-thee or Ee-AN-thee, rather than 2 like Zan-thee)

But I like both Ione or Ismene (Eye-OH-nee, Iz-MAY-nee) better than either.

Thora is due a revival I reckon
Sabrina
Love Ffion
Also Linos
Roslyn

Signy - I think Circe (Ser-see) is nicer, or Sorrell?
Freyja - it’s very overused and the more complex spelling will be a pain, Freida instead?
Sylvie - nice, getting pretty popular
Rowan - lovely but so many of them
Robyn - love it if spelt Robin
Elowen - lovely but she’ll end up another Ellie
Lamorna - nah. Sounds like a dodgy soap character
Lowenna - nice
Sort of thinking nature or pagan/goddess type names though have Cornish roots of DH side

Ysella (Ee-zella) is a nice Cornish one
