We want to use the a variation of the name Maria, but not Maria / Marie/ Miriam/ Mary. What are the useable variations of this name which are as close to Maria as possible?
I have found:
Marianna
Marissa
Marina
Marialisa
Marialina

I know there are others like
Anna-Maria
Maria-Louisa
However, I’m not keen on a hyphenated name, looking for a name that doesn’t have a hyphen in between.

Mariam is lovely.
Marieke- most beautiful song ever.

Honeyroar · 17/11/2021 15:16

I prefer Marianne to Marianna too.
Mari is nice.
I’ve met lots of ladies called Marina.
Marissa is ok too.

gaslady14 · 17/11/2021 15:19

I know a Mariska and think her name is just beautiful.

Marieke is also lovely.

Luredbyapomegranate · 17/11/2021 20:28

Marianne is the nicest I think
Or Maryam/Mariam
Marina is nice but I don't think it's a version of Maria

You don't need a hyphen between Anna Maria etc, if that makes it better for you.

Marianne
Marion
Marilyn
Marnie
Marika

Muireann Pronounced Mur ..an
Irish for Mary Ann

Shasha17 · 18/11/2021 03:24

Marina apparently has nothing to do with Mary/Maria and unlike the others is an entirely separate name, much to my disappointment (wanted a Maria based name for religious reasons and love Marina!) I like Marietta and Mariana best

Shasha17 · 18/11/2021 03:25

And Miriam and Mary

PennyWus · 18/11/2021 03:33

I knew a Mariella once. Never came across the name before or since, still think it is beautiful.

@TheSpiral

Marina, is where boats park Bet nobody ever said that to Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark.
Not to her face. Her Boaty McBoatface.

Here in Italy we've got:
Marianna (used to be short for Maria Anna but is now a name on its own)
Marina
Mariolina
Marisa (Maria Luisa) ("s" pronounced as /s/)
Maresa (Maria Teresa) (also pronounced with /s/)
Mariangela
Marika (Maria Carmela/Carmen)

Basically any Maria + other name can contract to form a new name.

TheSpiral · 18/11/2021 09:29

@MrsTerryPratchett - I hardly ever genuinely laugh at posts but that did make me giggle out loud.

Shasha17 · 18/11/2021 10:33

I would consider Mary and Maria and Miriam far more usable that Marialisa or Marialina in the UK.

minipie · 18/11/2021 10:55

I like lots of these names (especially Marianne) but wouldn’t think of them as being connected to Maria.

If you want to honour someone called Maria why not use Maria as a middle name and choose a different first name that you like.

Chunkymenrock · 18/11/2021 11:05

Ria?

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/11/2021 14:38

Thanks @TheSpiral

I won't lie. I was inordinately pleased with that one.

VenusClapTrap · 18/11/2021 14:52

I used to work with a Mara, and thought that was lovely.

Marianne is beautiful.

toadstool32 · 18/11/2021 15:00

Mia

FlamingoDust · 18/11/2021 20:54

Marielena

FlamingoDust · 18/11/2021 20:55

Marialena is what I meant to write but my phone didn't like it!

BruiserWoods · 18/11/2021 20:57

Marianne is much more elegant than Marianna.

I like Marina too. And Marielle

Fabuleuse · 19/11/2021 07:19

Mairi
Marysia

TataMamma · 19/11/2021 10:27

Not Marissa please - makes me think of Mrs Coulter!
Marian is also similarish and not mentioned so far I think.
Or Mary-Rose, Rosemary, are maybe possibilities, along with Ann-Marie or Ann Marie or Annemarie if you don't like hyphens (and I agree with that).

VanillaAndOrange · 20/11/2021 16:59

I quite like Marian and Mariel(le).
