Did mumsnet name your baby?

CatonMat · 17/11/2021 04:28

Have people heard a name that they then used, or been put off a previously loved name?

How many people have decided their child's name on mumsnet users preferences or suggestions? Smile

Nope. Desperation named my first, sleep deprivation my second.

With hindsight, sleep deprivation did the better job.

DeadoftheMoon · 17/11/2021 04:37

No. Her name is from the Bible. Those names have been in use for a while, tried and tested. The ones still popular must be ok.

Shasha17 · 17/11/2021 05:45

I got opinions of several names I liked, but I wouldn´t say Mumsnet had the final say in the name I chose by a long shot. However, Mumsnet definitely helped me to cross some names off the shortlist (and ruined some names for me forever Grin )

CatonMat · 17/11/2021 06:07

Yeah I wondered that too.
Some people must be settled on a name, to be met by a chorus of disapproval or hilarity.

Nope, they said the name was horrid. I love it and it suits so well!

WakeUpLockie · 17/11/2021 06:21

No but I have named a baby on mumsnet SmileSmileSmile my name suggestion was used and I was thanked personally 💁🏻‍♀️💁🏻‍♀️
So lovely and I often wonder about that little one!

CatonMat · 17/11/2021 06:23

Ah that's nice to know!
It's really something to think you've launched a new life out into the world bearing your name choice. Smile

The name we are going to use for our baby due in January was suggested by a poster here, I hadn't even considered it before but it fit perfectly so quickly became our top choice.

SummaLuvin · 17/11/2021 09:05

I have my list of names I like - some of which my DH likes, some of which he doesn't. But for the most part it's a choice only between the two of us.

I might post it here just in case there is something I was unaware of which would be helpful to know, like Joby being slang for poo in Scotland, that is worth knowing but not something DH or I would have come across otherwise.

Overall, I take this Baby Name Board with a pinch of salt. Most people don't care as deeply about names as people who linger on this forum, so I think opinions here are heightened. And I am also well aware that the preferences and taste on this board skews rather conservative and my (slightly) bolder choices might not go down well - Constantine not James for example.

flashpaper · 17/11/2021 09:19

I'm sure when I asked for opinions on DDs name (11 years ago!), it was met on here with disapproval and hilarity (as it was with the wider family too). We didn't care, we stuck with it and I still love it, and now I regularly see posters suggesting it saying how much they love it and how beautiful it is!

elfran · 17/11/2021 13:02

Nope, I've lingered on these boards for a couple years because I'm a name enthusiast, but when it came to my own baby born early this year, I never even canvassed opinions. I know from reading other threads that hers is a pretty marmite name, but I'm confident in my taste, and I tend toward "strong reaction" names anyway. It was only important to me that my husband and I love it, and not people on the internet! I do love to offer an opinion on others' names though (obv only when asked, and I try to be as nice as possible about it).

WearingPurpleAlready · 17/11/2021 14:35

No. Mumsnet very nearly named my son. But we decided on something else.

NameChange30 · 17/11/2021 14:46

No, but I did find it helpful to get opinions on our shortlist and favourites. Both DCs have slightly unusual names that DH and I love, but we were nervous about whether people would dislike them or find them weird. I found it encouraging that most people on my threads seemed to like the name. And in the end, we decided to go for it, we figured if anyone disliked the names it was their problem not ours, and it would be a shame not to choose names we loved. If the majority of Mumsnetters had hated the names, though, I might not have gone for it.

Crunchymum · 17/11/2021 18:03

MN helped me not name my DD.

I really liked Indiana (still do to be honest) but no-one in RL did so I came here to garner support. I didn't get much Grin

DD is nearly 7 and has a beautiful name. DP found it in the end and it is perfect.

MojoJojo71 · 17/11/2021 18:08

No but I’m pleased to say mumsnet does seem to approve of her name and I frequently see it suggested on threads

IVflytrap · 17/11/2021 18:43

Nope, I'm childless, however I've checked on this board every so often for the last few years and on two occasions a mumsnetter has gone with the name I suggested (and said as much). Still chuffed and I still remember the names/wonder how the babies and mums are doing. Smile

neverornow · 17/11/2021 19:52

Yes! Everyone loves it and it really suits her

scrivette · 17/11/2021 19:57

I first heard my DC's name on Mumsnet just after I had DC1. I had never heard it before and it stayed with me for 4 years and when I had DC2 I used the name.

Winniemarysarah · 17/11/2021 20:01

@sunnytimes83

Nope, they said the name was horrid. I love it and it suits so well!
Same. I can’t believe how vile the comments were, some of them were written like the posters actually felt pure hatred towards a name that a stranger picked. The majority of comments were people saying it not even a name at all, just a stupid word to call a male child. It’s sonny btw, similar to your username :) and it certainly is a name!
ItsSunnyOutside · 17/11/2021 20:30

I'm pretty sure the lovely name we picked for our DC would be pulled apart by some on here, or at least it would have been a couple of years ago. I've seen it mentioned a few times recently so perhaps it is becoming more popular? Then again, I don't particularly like many of the popular suggestions that get mentioned a lot on these threads.
I might say 'I'm not keen on that one' if there is a choice of names that the op has given, but I don't feel strongly enough about names that I would write some of the things that I see on here sometimes!
I feel like writing ' yikes, calm down' in response to some users!

Blubells · 17/11/2021 21:21

No. Mumsnet doesn't seem to like dc's name. But I still love it!
