Is this too much like the Kardashians?

I have two sisters and we all have the same initial at the start of our names (pre-dating the Kardashians being famous)

Now I'd love to follow that pattern with my kids but is it tacky now that the Kardashians are famous for it?

Very much dependent on the names, really. For me, the tackiness comes with some of the names being spelled differently to fit the K theme.

Is your last name the same initial?

As ever on this board, consider a middle name that they can use when they’re adults if they don’t like it.

diamondsoles · 12/11/2021 18:23

It'll just be the first name not the surname too so maybe it's ok

Totally agree about changing the spelling! I didn't think about that

Didn't some American family with 9 kids do this with the J as the first initial?

Not my cup of tea, it's little cheesy, and I would find it too limiting in terms of name choice. But, I wouldn't think badly of someone for it, and it means something to you then does it really matter? Not everyone will like your kids names regardless of if they have matching initials.

DockOTheBay · 12/11/2021 18:27

If they're nice names and you only have 2 or 3 kids i think it's fine.
Three kids called Eleanor, Emma and Edward is totally different to Kourtney and Krystal or whatever they're called.

AntsMarching · 12/11/2021 18:27

@SummaLuvin that is the Duggar family, they have 19 kids with J names.

Yes I definitely agree with this

DockOTheBay · 12/11/2021 18:30

They did the same naff changing the name spelling to fit the theme, with names like Jinger and had loads which ended up really similar like Joanna and Joy-Anna

SpangoDweller · 12/11/2021 18:31

Exactly @DockOTheBay. I don’t think I’d even notice this in a sibling group

MomoMojito · 12/11/2021 18:33

I agree it only screams 'Kardashian' if it's deliberately misspelled or otherwise weird names. If the names are all classy in themselves and not overly matchy or rhimey or anything I think it's fine.

Something like Nancy, Natalie and Nia
Or Sophie, Sarah and Sylvia

Sophie, Secily and Soë not so much!

TatianaBis · 12/11/2021 18:59

I know a Tabitha, Thalia and Thomasina.

Never really gave the initial thing much thought.

Wigglegiggle0520 · 12/11/2021 19:11

Didn’t your post always get mixed up?

It would certainly make handing down labelled clothes easier!

emmathedilemma · 12/11/2021 19:41

That's exactly what i was about to ask @Wigglegiggle0520 my mum and brother have the same initial and even that led to not knowing whose post was whose if they didn't include Mr / Mrs.

BiscuitLover09876 · 12/11/2021 22:37

Agree with other posters. Also it's not an unusual trend in the states. It just depends on the names.

GreenLunchBox · 12/11/2021 22:38

I know a family of four kids where all the kid's names begin with a V. It is actually adorable!

waitingpatientlyforspring · 12/11/2021 22:49

I have a colleague who has three girls with the same initial.

It was one of my rules though not to do. I have the same initial as my mum and even though she had re-married so we no longer had the same surname, she still opened my post (to Miss not Mrs) as she allegedly still got post in her previous married name 🙄

So that's something to consider when you have young adults in the house who are all Miss J Smith.

Onlinedilema · 13/11/2021 16:23

I think it's totally fine if you really like the names so Sarah and Sophie completely fine.
Sounds a bit daft if you have lots of kids and alter the spellings to fit. So Joseph, John, Jorgina not so good.

Helpstopthepain · 13/11/2021 16:31

I know someone who did this with 3dc.

I find it a bit weird. She calls them ‘the E’s’ or ‘team E’.

Sounds like me and my mates on a Saturday night out a few years ago
Helpstopthepain · 13/11/2021 16:36

@letsfightlikechickens Grin I bet she hasn’t thought of that! (I hadn’t)

Elisemum · 13/11/2021 20:24

Agree with all previous posters, completely OK if they are normal names ie: Josh, Jamie and Jason or Alex, Alana and Arthur - names like that.
If it’s a made up, try to hard names then its daft

VanillaAndOrange · 15/11/2021 23:38

I wouldn't do it myself, but I don't hate it if I like the individual names enough and they're not too contrived, as others have said.

One thing I did find a bit weird was an American family I know slightly who gave their first 4 children the same initial (no strange misspellings though) and the last one not only a different initial but a double-barrelled first name. So something along the lines of Mary, Michelle, Mark, Matthew and... Sarah-Jane! I think if you have more than two kids in a row with the same initial you are kind of committed to it.

jackstini · 16/11/2021 00:04

Fine as long as they are not misspelled

Give them a middle name with a different initial though - one of my friends was one of 3 girls with same first 2 initials - post was a nightmare!

SleafordSods · 16/11/2021 07:27

I had the same rule waiting. I have the same initial as my DF who would open my post, read it, put it somewhere random and then forget to tell me about it. We all have different initials in our family now Smile

Grin at letsfight.

Edenember · 16/11/2021 09:40

I’m really not keen. I do agree with other posters that part of the tackiness comes from the misspellings and the surname being the same initial but I feel it even when this isn’t the case (I think most of the Duggar’s are spelled properly). I think it’s something about being an obvious matchy ‘set’ that I don’t like. That said, if this is a tradition and it means a lot to you, go for it. I would have a think about the future though - as others have mentioned there’s a point where you really have to commit to it and it’s quite restrictive.
