Name for Sikh/English girl?

PotatoSalady · 11/11/2021 10:29

Punjabi Sikh dad and English mother. We already have a 2 year old boy with a very traditional Punjabi/Sikh name - Sohan, Smileand are due with a little girl in April 2022. We would love another traditional Indian name but with easy pronunciation for our English speaking family members and school etc. We would have the middle name Kaur. Some examples of girls names we like are -

Asha
Anika
Nilam
Nina
Ameya
Elora

Which name do you like best out of these or suggestions for any more we might not have thought of? TIA xx
Smile

Malika
Seema

Saffzy · 11/11/2021 23:23

Congratulations! I love them all, especially Asha. Not too keen on Nilam but that might because I know of a not very nice woman at work with that name.
I also like Jesminder/Jasminder and as someone else mentioned, Jaya.

bleedinora · 11/11/2021 23:26

It can be misconstrued to mean 'this dick' (e- this, lora- dick). Lora can also mean 'need/necessity' in Punjabi. Either way, I think it'll result in a few sniggers if chosen for a name.

momamama · 11/11/2021 23:29

Elora is so pretty!

RAFHercules · 11/11/2021 23:29

Asha, love it.

jackstini · 11/11/2021 23:30

I like all apart from Nilam

Others:
Priyanka/Priya
Kemi
Jasleen
Katia
Haspira
Shirina

househuntinginthesouth · 11/11/2021 23:35

They're all lovely but I think Asha Kaur and Nina Kaur are my favourites

MrsBertBibby · 12/11/2021 05:42

I love Nina and Nilam.

I know a Raveen, beautiful name, (lovely woman too)

PotatoSalady · 12/11/2021 10:15

Thank you everyone for your feedback/suggestions - all very helpful Smile seems Nilam/Neelam isn’t overly popular but all the others have got the thumbs up. I think we are leaning towards Asha/Nina at the moment but that could change by the time she’s born.. Jaya is lovely but we have a niece with that name. I’ll ask husband about Elora and possible rude connotations 😟 I do think it’s a beautiful name though so would be sad to have to scrap it! Will report back 😁

@PotatoSalady did you pick a name in the end?!

Luredbyapomegranate · 21/01/2022 10:48

Elora
Ameya
Anika
Asha
Nina (popular but dull)
In that order
Nilam I think will often be mistaken for a boys name

Darhon · 21/01/2022 10:56

I think Anusha is lovely

Pinto33 · 21/01/2022 14:35

Asha and Anika are my faves, beautiful and perfect with Sohan. I also like Nina but not quite so much. Congratulations Flowers
