Just that really.

How does everyone pronounce this name and what do you think of it?

Having this debate amongst my family and friends as my baby due in January will probably be called Eleanor!

For me I'd pronounce it 'Ell-a'nore' but my family take issue and say I need to spell it Eleanore otherwise it's pronounced 'El-en-a'

Really struggling with it Grin

starrynight21 · 07/11/2021 00:59

I've only ever heard it pronounced Ella - nore.

Surely if you were going to pronounce it El-en -a you'd spell it Ellena.

JimJamJolly · 07/11/2021 01:07

I say "elle-a-nore", and the only 1 person I've ever known in real life with the name used to pronounce it the same and would always correct people who said "elle-a-na"!

Whenever I see an Eleanor, I always pronounce it NOR.

We used to have patient with the name and the mother would really pronounce the NOR. She's actually stop and say Elea..NOR.

That was irritating.

CatonMat · 07/11/2021 01:11

Ell a nore

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 07/11/2021 01:11

The beatles song eleanor rigby....sing that to yourself. That is how to pronounce it

CatonMat · 07/11/2021 01:12

My best friend's sister is an Eleanor, we (me, her sister, her family, herself) all pronounce it Ellaner/El-ah-neh.

Like 'melon' + 'uh'?

(I wish I could do proper IPA on my phone, haha)

As opposed to El-ah-nore.

All Northern, if that helps.

idontlikealdi · 07/11/2021 01:17

Elll a nore

SerenTarot · 07/11/2021 01:19

My daughter is Eleanor.

I loved the Lindisfarne song Lady Eleanor and always said if I had a daughter that's what I'd call her.

We pronounce it Ellen-or.

fallfallfall · 07/11/2021 01:21

three syllables L N OR

TenFootTall · 07/11/2021 01:22

Ell-en-orr is how I would pronounce it and I'm in central Scotland.

CatonMat · 07/11/2021 01:22

It has to be the OR sound for me..

MrsBertBibby · 07/11/2021 01:25

Ellen-ah

If you want the "naw" at the end, how about the very much less used Elinor?

OhYeahyeahyeah · 07/11/2021 01:46

Ella - Na

MollyBloomYes · 07/11/2021 01:49

That's my name! I go by an uncommon shortening though so it doesn't come up much. When I was younger I used to pronounce it 'El-e-nah' until my mum eventually said that officially it was 'El-e-nore'. Tbh she pronounced it pretty much the same as me, probably down to laziness in pronunciation (possibly accent except I come from a South-East area where you'd expect the 'nore' pronunciation if you really thought about it)

I've had people pronounce it both ways when introduced or seen it written down, it doesn't really bother me. It's a lovely lovely name and I do like it very much but I found it inevitably got shortened to Ellie which I didn't want (there were seven Eleanors shortened to Ellie in my year group at secondary school). Hence why when I found a more unusual shortening around the age of 14 I ran with it! I'd happily go by Eleanor now as an adult but it does make people think you're quite...posh? Not quite the right word but in the job I do I need to not be viewed as too posh or intimidating for very vulnerable people so a shortened name works better.
Sorry, massive detraction, it's a lovely name, I love having the name just be prepared for it to be shortened! And I think whichever way you pronounce it you will get both pronunciations but officially that spelling is the 'nore' one!

notangelinajolie · 07/11/2021 01:52

Ella nor (rhymes with 4)
