Cormac vs Lorcan

We’re considering both these names for our baby boy. For context, we’re Scottish but live overseas. Just wondering what people think of both of them, rather than preferences.

Cormac: originally considered this for DS1. We’d be pronouncing it cor-mack. I’m a bit worried it’ll get pronounced Cor-mick instead, which I know is not incorrect but I don’t like it! I’m also concerned about the lack of a nickname - I don’t like Corrie and I think Mac is a bit cringe for a Scottish person.

Lorcan: I think this is really handsome. Is it too Irish for us? We have Irish heritage on both sides, but not relatives we’re in touch with. I thought the spelling maybe makes it more useable. Unfortunately when you Google it there are lots of pictures of what appears to be a fantasy elf (?!). It flows nicely with our surname but again, no nickname (and my husband hates Lori/Laurie due to a guy he knows).

Please be kind - I’m very pregnant and hormonal!

Thanks Smile

I think they're both cracking names, OP. My sister's friend has a Cormac. Great name and no need for a nickname.

Lorcan is also great. I don't know any - I'm in Scotland- but if you have Irish heritage it's lovely. I have Irish heritage too and considered Cahill.

Lots of great Scottish names. I have a Struan (nn Strupot - don't ask!Grin) and a Lauchlan (Lauchie for short). We also have a Cal - no nn required!

I love Fergus or Angus.

Puffalicious · 04/11/2021 17:22

Meant to say if you have Cormac or Lorcan there won't be many and that's a bonus in my eyes. All my boys are the only ones in their year, exactly as I wanted it.

FartnissEverbeans · 04/11/2021 17:27

@Puffalicious Thank you! Struan and Lauchlan are beautiful names too, and Cal
is very cool. I agree about wanting a less common name - I work with a lot of children and I get bored of more common names very quickly!

I absolutely love Cormac. My favourite boy name. I would pronounce Mac not mick.

ToniHargis · 04/11/2021 17:58

If you're living overseas and intend to stay there for a while, I'd consider whether there might be confusion when you say the name. I lived in the US for decades and all of my kids (I thought) had names that were pronounced the same in the UK and the USA.
I, on the other hand, spent most of the time in the USA telling people that my name wasn't Joanie!

@AnyaMoondial

I absolutely love Cormac. My favourite boy name. I would pronounce Mac not mick.
Just had to comment on this! Be prepared that your lovely unusual name will become THE most popular name about 5 years later. I named my first son Aidan in honour of my Irish and Northumbrian heritage. At the time a lot of people didn't even know the name and many were unsure of the spelling. Thanks to Sex & The City, about 5 years later the name was everywhere! Pah!
FindingMeno · 04/11/2021 18:02

I see the dilemma!
Love both of them.
Perhaps wait till he's born and see which seems most fitting.

FartnissEverbeans · 04/11/2021 18:02

@AnyaMoondial Thanks, that’s good to know!

@ToniHargis The predominant language here isn’t English so I think there’ll be pronunciation issues regardless! Even my own, very common, very straightforward name gets mispronounced and misspelled regularly

@FindingMeno Thanks, I’m thinking that might be the best approach! We have to register within a few days so it’s got me a bit stressed but I’m sure something will stick?

FartnissEverbeans · 04/11/2021 18:05

@ToniHargis Funnily enough, my first son’s name is super uncommon - and this year there were suddenly 75 of them born in England and Wales! It’s a massive increase. Can’t escape the hive mind!

@FartnissEverbeanses, don't stress, you might naturally reach a conclusion before then anyhow!
Love your username Grin

FartnissEverbeans · 04/11/2021 18:07

@FindingMeno Here’s hoping… it’s taken us a loooong time to get to this point Grin Good problems I guess!

Thanks OP. I love all my boys' names- Struan is still my favourite name of all time (I don't tell the others this!). I almost named DS1 Ruairdh- glad I didn't because they're everywhere now, 17 years later.

Logan also nice- similar to Lorcan. Think my favourite is Cormac, though.

Muttly · 04/11/2021 18:51

Cormac is mostly pronounced cor muck around where I live in Ireland. But I’d imagine Scotland has its own version.

brambleon · 04/11/2021 19:03

I love Lorcan

DramaAlpaca · 04/11/2021 23:28

Both fab names. I like Lorcan best.

averythinline · 04/11/2021 23:35

Cormac is great.....classic but with character...

TheSandgroper · 05/11/2021 03:10

I have a grownup Cormac. Never Corrie or Mac. Occasionally Cormie by his mates when teasing. Depending upon the amount of Strine in the voice, sometimes Cormack. But, really, always Cormac.

Can’t help with Lorcan but it is a very good name.

Peachbubble · 05/11/2021 06:47

I'd choose Lorcan

LizziesTwin · 05/11/2021 06:51

I think of both names being Irish rather than Scottish, but I’m English so what do I know.

CruCru · 07/11/2021 09:04

I’ve never heard of Cormac. If it can be pronounced in a way that you don’t like then I wouldn’t go with it. Someone WILL pronounce it that way and it will annoy you.

I’d choose Lorcan.

Velvetbee · 07/11/2021 09:21

Lorcan is my favourite,
