Anyone else have a name that's way ahead of its time?

So I'm just about to turn 50. So you'd perhaps expect me to have a name such as Sarah, Lisa, Julie or Caroline. Something along those lines.

But no. I was saddled with Poppy Ava Surname.

There must be others I'm sure but I've yet to meet one my age. People sometimes do a bit of a double rake when I tell them I'm called Poppy.

Dunno what my parents were thinking but clearly ahead of their time!

Anyone else similar?

I think Poppy is a name suited to all ages and wouldn't bat an eyelid, saying that I don't know many 50 year old Poppy's so you do have a point. It's a lovely name though so well done to your parents!

Not me but I have a cousin called Amelia May and her sister is Olivia Lily. Both very common names now, but they’re both in their late 40’s.

Pumpkinstace · 01/11/2021 17:48

My Nana's sister was Lily May, sadly not hyphenated Grin

Blossomtoes · 01/11/2021 17:48

Yes, I’m older than you and my name is currently the height of fashion - needless to say it caused me to be an object of ridicule when I was young.

Westfacing · 01/11/2021 17:54

I knew a 90-year old Alanah, and an 80-year old Jason.

LocalHobo · 01/11/2021 17:56

I know a 50 year old Daisy, and I find it quite awkward to call her by her name.
It seems fine for a child and an elderly woman but not suitable for a professional person.

AliceAldridge · 01/11/2021 17:59

Yes my name was ahead of its time - an old ladies name until I was about 20 and since then, always in the top ten. I have stopped bothering to look when someone calls it in Tesco.

KirstenBlest · 01/11/2021 20:23

I have a name that was a bit of a granny name. It's popular now.

Anoisagusaris · 01/11/2021 20:28

Daisy, Lily, mollie , May, Maisie and those types of names were old lady names when I was younger. I don’t know people in their 30s-70s with those names but plenty older and younger.

Junobug · 01/11/2021 20:39

I have a completely made up spelling to an uncommon name, well before it was common to have made up spellings. It makes me cringe everytime I have to spell my name out, I'm too old for that.

RuthW · 01/11/2021 20:57

My dd had a very rare name when she was born. 25 years later it's in the top 15.

ThelmaMadine · 01/11/2021 21:01

My likes-all-things-exclusive had a little girl in early 2012 and named her Elsa.

About a year later, the trailers started…

Sprogonthetyne · 01/11/2021 21:05

I went through my entire childhood without meeting another person with my name. I then met 3 children with it in a single toddler group.

QueenCarrot · 01/11/2021 21:08

My sister called her daughter Debbie a few years back. To me it’s a really common name but she went through school without meeting a single other child called Debbie. It was the dinner ladies name though!

NotAnotherHelen · 01/11/2021 21:09

I’m the opposite - I am twenty years too young for my name.

TRFran · 01/11/2021 21:17

My 27 year-old sister is called Ivy, after our great-grandmother. Popular now but I’ve never met another 20-something with the name.

Heartsandroses · 01/11/2021 21:22

My mate had an auntie poppy-aged 87 when I met her
My own name is either from the 1800’s or the 90’s (although it’s swung back into fashion)
My own daughter-her name wasn’t that common when she was born
Now it’s everywhere

BlueFlavour · 01/11/2021 21:22

I’m 53 and my name is Zara.
I hated it when I was younger Grin

minipie · 01/11/2021 21:27

I never met anyone with my name growing up. Then it became very fashionable when I was about 12.

Sadly it doesn’t make people think I’m 12 years younger…

Pumpkinsonparade · 01/11/2021 21:30

I know an 80 yo Colin. Seems odd!!
And a 90 yo Linda!!

annawi · 01/11/2021 21:30

DH is called Luke which was very rare when he was named in the early 1970s - he said he was the only one at school and only one of two he knew at university. Seven years on from his birth year it started becoming very popular and has remained so - due primarily to Star Wars I think

ThelmaMadine · 01/11/2021 22:04

I know a 96 year old Zena.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 01/11/2021 23:41

My new granddaughter is Poppy.

I was born 1975 and went to school with an Amelia and Isabelle. I think Amelia was a year older and Isabelle was a year younger.

PanicBuyingSprouts · 02/11/2021 06:58

Not me, my name is far too much of its time, but my DF is in her 50s abs named Olivia. When she used to introduce herself and her DD people always got mixed up and thought that her DD was Olivia.
