What do you think? I've liked the name Nina for years and found out last week I'm having a little girl. 🥰 It's not a name I hear often at all really and I don't know anyone personally with this name I just wonder if maybe it's outdated or old fashion?

Other names I've considered are Margot or Matilda.

Love love love it. It was top of the girl list for us, but we had two boys.

Jayjayes · 04/11/2021 17:10

Another Nina here, am 36 years old. Growing up I was shy and it made me stand out so wanted a regular name like Gemma Blush Now I love that it makes me stand out. It’s uncommon and only really met one other Nina.

I never really got neeenoor growing up but did hear it on occasion but it didn’t really bother me.

I’ve had it shortened to neens as a nickname which I didn’t mind either.

Only other thing growing up personalised gifts in shops hardly ever have Nina as a option, I still remember the bear pin with my name I got one summer

Please not Margot. I always see it as pretentious.

Nina or Tilly.

Or Nena or Neena.

I went to school with a Neena - www.prokerala.com/kids/baby-names/neena-16072.html

I love the name Nina!

villamariavintrapp · 04/11/2021 23:19

I love Nina, it was on our list. But we went for Anya, and I call her Nancy sometimes 😂

Edenember · 04/11/2021 23:43

Very nice. It’s not something I would choose myself, but I’ve always thought of it as an effortlessly cool girl name, stylish and elegant, most likely because of that international vibe. But it’s definitely not faddy either. Easy to say and spell, great on a little one or a woman, never been overpopular but everyone knows it. Great choice!

I am a teacher and the force have associations with almost every name.

I love Nina. I have taught two in my career. One would now be 13, one is seven. I work in a huge primary so I really don’t think it’s common. Both Ninas I taught were amazing children. Clever, kind, interesting, assertive, fun.

I see it as a timeless, classic, unusual and multicultural name. You are not tempted to make assumptions about class or race with a Nina and that is rare.

I’m teaching two Margots this year alone. And I have taught so many Matildas/Tilly’s/Tildas. Nice names but so popular and very much of this time and to be they are names that scream “we like to see ourselves as a bit quirky and interesting, we keep with the times but with a traditional core, we love Boden and holidays in Cornwall.”

Another real life Nina! Glad you like it and it didn't invite much teasing 😄

Thanks! It seems to have a very positive response here and DH and I are 99% sure now it's going to be Nina. I'm glad to hear many saying it's multicultural, as she will be mixed race so hopefully will suit her well.

I appreciate your input as a teacher! Pretty much 99% sure we're sticking with Nina. I've loved it for so long but had a wobble. Thanks MNers for helping me decide Grin

So happy you're going with it!

EnidFrighten · 06/11/2021 07:21

I like it! Margot and Matilda have way more middle class vibes imho

You should look up ninna nanna, it's an Italian lullaby I used to sing to mine

Good luck!

Edenember · 07/11/2021 21:16

Brilliant choice and I wish you well 😊

89redballoons · 07/11/2021 22:08

It's lovely!

My DS (nearly 2) has taken a real shine to a little girl at one of his toddler groups called Nina, and keeps talking about her Grin it's an easy name for little ones to say! He can't pronounce his own name yet...

Marimaur · 07/11/2021 22:47

Nina is lovely.
