Rhyming names - it this outrageous?!!

Rhyming first name, middle name and surname?!!

Example just for an idea of what I mean (not exactly the names we are considering and not our actual surname)

Emily Beverly Knightley

Is it too much? The middle name we are considering is a family name and we really want to use it for sentimental reasons, it doesn’t have any suitable variations, otherwise we would have chosen something that doesn’t rhyme at all to balance the name out. We love the first name but it rhymes with the surname, do we have to change it?

Hard to say as the example you gave doesn't rhyme.

Emily Knightley sounds fine to me, and middle names aren't used often in every day life, so it wouldn't matter if it rhymed.

Paul Hall on the other hand would sound silly.

ofwarren · 30/10/2021 08:49

That doesn't rhyme
Emily Knightly sounds fine

Salsachips · 30/10/2021 08:50

@Whinge Sorry the examples I have given are not exactly rhyming but with heavy assonance and consonance I mean!

What about Millie Lily, Mary Berry etc.. those are too sing-songy I think? I don’t want to put up the actual names, just trying to give a vague idea.

Difficult to say without knowing the names. We decided against giving DD a rhyming name but know others who use a nickname that isn't so obviously rhyming.

Cakequeen1988 · 30/10/2021 08:57

Well Mary Berry also doesn’t rhyme, and the sounds ‘match’ for want of a better word and flow however Millie Lily sounds ridiculous. I wouldn’t thank my parents for that

Hopeisallineed · 30/10/2021 09:04

Are they actually rhyming like Milly Lily? As that sounds ridiculous but think assonance is okay, or less twee.

ofwarren · 30/10/2021 09:22

If they rhyme like Millie lily then it's not good. Mary berry sounds fine to me though

RacketeerRalph · 30/10/2021 10:11

You'll need to give the actual names because Milly Lily is awful, but Emily Beverley is fine.

Maireas · 30/10/2021 12:26

It's really impossible to judge without saying the names. None of the above examples really rhyme or are particularly problematic.

TatianaBis · 30/10/2021 13:07

Doesn’t rhyme just shares the same -ly ending.

You could do Emilia Beverly Knightley or Emily Beverly Ann Knightley to break it up.

But, yes without seeing the exact names it’s hard to say.

groovergirl · 30/10/2021 14:21

Claire Blair, Anne Mann, Polly Holley, Rowan Owen, Arlo Marlowe, Jake Blake, Harry Parry, Bella Weller, Alice Tallis, Tara O'Hara, Sally O'Malley ... If these rhymes sound a bit silly to you, OP, you might want to consider using a variation of the name you like to minimise the rhyme. E.g. Alice could be Alicia, Alyssa or Alison.

Cindie943811A · 30/10/2021 14:23

Does the total name sound like a tongue twister like Millie Lily?

Itsbeen84yearss · 30/10/2021 14:27

As others have said would have to know the actual names to say

campion · 30/10/2021 14:28

Add a second, short middle name if it bothers you.
Otherwise, like pp have said, it really depends on the actual names. Your example is fine - mine's similar to that and I've never even thought about it until now!

Theuniverseandeverything · 01/11/2021 17:27

Emily Beverley is awful when you say it out loud, worse than Mary Berry. Can’t you just pick a different name if you’re not sure.

NoDecentHandlesLeft · 01/11/2021 22:51

Emily Beverley sounds clunky but it doesn't rhyme.
By first name, middle name, surname, do you mean like Ellen Helen Fellon? Or just the first and middle (which isn't terrible), or just first and last- so like Jack Black?

I'd advise avoiding rhyming names.

Ichangedmynameonce · 01/11/2021 23:08

I knew a girl at school whose names rhymed and it was mentioned often Hmm

Topseyt · 01/11/2021 23:24

Emily Beverley does not rhyme, but I don't think it sounds good. Clunky and clumsy more like.

Names that completely rhyme are not a great idea in my opinion. They can sound more like a rather bad joke, and that is unfair on the child.

Millie Lily for a girl just sounds utterly ridiculous. Likewise Melinda Belinda. Harry Larry Barry for a boy sounds twatty.

Difficult to fully judge without knowing the proposed names, but I think it is generally something to be very wary about.

grey12 · 01/11/2021 23:47

This reminds me I knew a boy who was Matthew Matthews Grin (not this name, not in the english language but similar) kids used to call him M&Ms!! His middle name was also an M!

Fernando072020 · 03/11/2021 06:24

Millie Lilly is dreadful. If it's proper rhyming like that, then I really wouldn't do that to my child...

CovidCorvid · 03/11/2021 06:36

I know someone with a proper rhyming name and it doesn’t sound good.

Fl0w3ry · 08/11/2021 14:38

I know 2 people whose childrens full names rhyme in a similar way. When I first heard them I was saying them a couple of times in my head because they felt a bit like a tongue twister. But as pp said, you don’t use middle names in every day life, so that thought goes away quickly.

Lindy2 · 08/11/2021 14:44

Well Jack Black has done ok with a rhyming name, although the L does add an extra sound. Being one syllable names also helps.

As others have said we need to know the actual names to give an opinion. Some rhyming names could work others clearly won't.

SoupDragon · 08/11/2021 14:48

I grew up with a rhyming name. It was horrible.

Don't do it.

Trixiefirecracker · 08/11/2021 16:06

@Lindy2 Jack Black is not his real name, it’s a stage name. Stage names are fine in the entertainment industry, it’s not the name his parents gave him though, he’s Thomas Jacob.
