I am Polish and we are looking for a name which could be used in both countries. Could you tell me how does Ada sound to your native speaker ears? :)

My great aunt was known as Ada but that was not her real name.i am in my seventies now so t must be very old fashioned.

ThirdElephant · 29/10/2021 23:33

I'd say it's Ay-da. I like it. Makes me think of Fascinating Aida though.

ANameChangeAgain · 29/10/2021 23:35

I like it a lot. Its one of those lovely vintage names. I would imagine there will be a few more Adas about now named after peaky Blinders's Ada Shelby.

TuftyMarmoset · 29/10/2021 23:35

I think it's a great name, and good connotations of Ada Lovelace. I would pronounce it ay-duh with the ay as in aid.

MTB103 · 29/10/2021 23:36

I'd pronounce this Ay-da - gorgeous name.

Undertheoldlindentree · 29/10/2021 23:47

Knew an Ada-Jane (in her 80's). Very pretty name.

LouLou198 · 30/10/2021 00:29

Lovely name that seems to be making a comeback.

Hesperatum · 30/10/2021 12:30

My grandmother's name. She hated it as her sisters were all called after flowers and she felt short changed!

Shasha17 · 30/10/2021 15:31

Ay- duh

Long A as in Alien
Duh as in the start of the word 'done'

itsallgoingpearshaped · 30/10/2021 15:37

I love the name; we have a niece called Ada.

fallfallfall · 30/10/2021 15:40

Ada, Aida, and Ida. All very sweet.

Bortles · 30/10/2021 15:40

Love it. Pretty, easy to spell, fairly poular but not annoyingly so.
Ada Monroe in Cold Mountain (Nicole Kidman) springs to mind.

Aurorie11 · 30/10/2021 15:44

It was my Grandma's name pronounced A- da, she absolutely hated the name and for that reason I could never use it but would like to have remembered my Grandma but she didn't have a middle name

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 30/10/2021 21:25

Very nice if quite trendy/popular name here in the UK - where it's pretty much always pronounced "Ay - dah". Ada Lovelace is a very cool namesake for a little girl.

adrianmolesmole · 30/10/2021 22:02

Love it, and also Ava. Old-fashioned names that are classy and elegant. And they work on all ages!

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 31/10/2021 03:13

to me Ada sounds a bit of a drudge's name.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 31/10/2021 03:19

Just be aware that in the UK you’ll get Adder rather than Aaah-Da from most people , which I find really ugly-sounding. Otherwise it’s a good fit for both cultures imo.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 31/10/2021 03:23

the common UK pronunciation is ay-da

TheWayTheLightFalls · 31/10/2021 07:23

Sorry - my comment above should’ve been prefaced with “If you opt for the European pronunciation”. You may want Aaaaah-Duh but get Adder.

MerryChristmasToYou · 31/10/2021 07:28

Ayda. Don't like it.

Chunkymenrock · 31/10/2021 07:28

I think it's an incredibly frumpy sounding name. So many much nicer names to choose!

hibye123 · 31/10/2021 07:36

A love it from Peaky Blinders😂😍

mum2jakie · 31/10/2021 07:42

It's a traditional British name but 'on trend' at the minute so it would fit in with other names in her peer group. It's pronounced Ay-da but people would adapt the pronunciation if you wanted it to sound more true to the Polish pronunciation.

Dionysus78 · 31/10/2021 07:44

Objectively a nice sounding name, but all I can think of is the gossipy lady who ran the kiosk in the Young Doctors.

lisaandalan · 31/10/2021 08:01

Lovely x
