OP posts:

I love it.

SoupDragon · 29/10/2021 07:39

Not Teddy. You're naming an adult, not just a baby.

Bobbybobbins · 29/10/2021 07:39

We have a Teddy James but he is Edward officially.

MydogWilloTheWispEvilEdna · 29/10/2021 07:41

For those who say it's odd for an adult, Teddy Sheringham?

I can imagine an adult Teddy James as an actor or designer, sportsman, solicitor. Actually anything tbh. I love it.

A family member has a very strong celtic name which we initially thought was a bit out there for a baby. He is in his twenties now and it's never actually been odd through any stage of his life. We couldn't imagine him with any other name. Isn't that always the case?

itsgettingwierd · 29/10/2021 07:42

Another who loves it but would give Edward as name on BC.

thewhatsit · 29/10/2021 07:43

Teddy is pretty much my most disliked name these days.. mainly because it’s just everything that is a 2010-20s name - ie cutesy and twee - but taking it to the absolute max. I don’t think you can get more cutesy than Teddy. As a nickname for a toddler of course it’s fine, but I would not want to be a 14 year old gangly Teddy or a grown up Teddy. I can’t imagine calling DH or any of his friends Teddy.

It’s v popular (you’d have to combine about 2/3 of the Edwards and Theodores with Teddy in the ONS charts to see the right number). I know of a number of them but what I find interesting is that half of them are already just “Ted” and this seemed to happen around 3 years old (so it’s the parents changing it).

cptartapp · 29/10/2021 07:45

Teddy Sherringham? Yeah, still laughable. So contrived.
Edward yes, James definitely.

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 29/10/2021 07:46

It's a hard no from me

Edward or theodore as first name.
Both go nicely with James.

SoupDragon · 29/10/2021 07:47

For those who say it's odd for an adult, Teddy Sheringham?

Do you mean Edward Sheringham?

BeKindBeYou · 29/10/2021 07:55

I love it. Teddy James - beautiful.
You will always get a ‘popular’ opinion wherever you go, and the ‘popular’ opinion on mumsnet is ‘twee’ names are not good. However, look on the ONS name charts - they are very popular for a reason!!!! Once all these children are grown up, they will be adult names and children names will be probably be Steve, Neil & Gary!

Sometimes, we are very quick to give our opinions on here as if they are facts, but truth is, it’s all just opinions.

I know an adorable Teddy & when he grows up he can choose to be known as Teddy, Ted or Ed.

If you like the name, GO FOR IT! :)

MydogWilloTheWispEvilEdna · 29/10/2021 08:03

Can see it on letter headed paper
Teddy James Ltd
Teddy James Associates
Teddy James Productions
Teddy James Jewellery

So no problem as an adult Smile

GlitterBiscuits · 29/10/2021 08:10

Teddy? I just don't get why people love it.
It's beyond awful.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 29/10/2021 08:14

Teddy is fine as a diminutive but it's not really ideal for an adult! Go for Edward James or Theodore James instead OP.

And FWIW when DD was at primary school the ones with those sort of yesteryear diminutives of names like Teddy tended to be the naughty boys.

MerryChristmasToYou · 29/10/2021 08:18

James is ok, Teddy isn't.

RussianSpy101 · 29/10/2021 08:19

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 nice username, Katie Hopkins.

FWIW, my DD is 7 and Hugo and William are the worst behaved children in her class.

No. He sounds like a cbeebies character.

Theodore or Edward James is much better.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 29/10/2021 08:28

Too babyish for a full name.

I don’t dislike Teddy, but it needs to be Edward. Or Theodore.

TenThousandSpoons · 29/10/2021 08:36

I like it. I would go for Edward on the BC just in case he wants options but I do think Teddy works for an adult - did nobody watch Love Island this year?

Also Ted Danson doesn’t have people laughing at his “twee” name I’m sure.

WitchsFamiliarWhichIsFamiliar · 29/10/2021 08:43

I'd go with a less well used middle name tbh. Little Teddys were everywhere a few years ago and every other little boy has the middle name James. Unless your surname is really unusual, I wouldn't use these two names together.

Ruralbliss · 29/10/2021 08:43

I had two Uncle Teds and know a 20 year old Ted.

My Aunty used to call my uncle Teddy when being affectionate. It was lovely.

WitchsFamiliarWhichIsFamiliar · 29/10/2021 08:51

I think Teddy is perfectly fine as a stand alone first name BTW. He can change it to Ted if he really wants when a bit older.

If it were me, I would probably use Edward on the BC, but I'm that way inclined. Plenty of Teddys around who are just Teddy.

toastofthetown · 29/10/2021 09:32

Teddy is fine as a stand-alone name. In 2020 Teddy was 31st in popularity - just two spots below Edward. Harry, Archie, Charlie, Freddie, Alfie and Tommy are all above Teddy in terms of popularity. While nicknames as full names isn’t a trend I like, that’s a matter of taste. Due to the massive popularity of these names, I really can’t see how they won’t work above primary school. There will be hundreds of thousands of them.

From your post I’m reading that James is a middle name? Unless you’ve chosen it for a reason, I’d change it to sometime more interesting. James is the beige of boys middle names.

sunglassesonthetable · 29/10/2021 09:46

I love Teddy.

I'd go Edward for BC though.

I know a a 21 yr old Teddy. It works well.

20viona · 29/10/2021 09:48

One of the most common names going.
